The reason some MIDI to TRS cables work, and others don't is because there are 2 standards for this cable. If you think of MIDI Pins from Left to Right as 1,2,3,4,5 and TRS Pins from base to tip as 0,1,2. Cable A: Connects MIDI Pins 2,3,4 to TRS Pins 1,0,2 and Cable B: Connects MIDI Pins 2,3,4 to TRS Pins 2,0,1 (In both cables MIDI pins 1 & 5 aren't used) So if you're in a pinch, and can switch those pins with some wire, you can fix the issue.

Korg and Make Noise, and a few others use type A - the standard, now there is one. Novation and Arturia use type B, because they started out with that. Some newer MIDI devices and modules inputs that just work with both.

Get an adapter that will split stereo into 2 mono jacks and swap both if needed.
@JH-lo9ut3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is confusing. Novation switched standards too, so the older midi controllers and grooveboxes use trs midi B, but their newer ones uses trs midi A, wich btw. looks like it's going to be the standard from now on. Here's how I made a simple DIY adapter: took an old 3,5 mm (=TRS, mini-jack or 8th inch) stereo extension cable. Cut off the male jack and kept the female jack with a few inches of the cable. I then took a new 3,5 mm stereo plug (costs about 3€) and soldered it on to the other end of the cable, making sure the tip-lead and the ring-lead were swapped around. (I buy a bunch of these at a time since I tend to wear out headphones at a redicilous rate.) The sleeve-lead is ground and stays the same. I checked wich lead goes to wich part of the TRS jack with a multimeter set to beep mode ( wich makes it go "beep" when there is connection between the two pokers.) I used a second male-male cable plugged into the female jack, just to be sure I could identify the right lead with the multimeter pokers. I made this adaptor male-female and kept the cable really short so that I won't confuse it with any other cable. This means I have to use a normal cable plugged into the adaptor in order to get a male plug in each end of the setup, but you can of couse make this a dedicated male-male adaptor cable of any length if you wish. It is also possible to take a standard 5-pin midi plug and solder it on to a trs cable, because midi only uses three of the leads. This is way trickier to get right though, since there is just more stuff in there to keep track of, besides the pins are embedded in plastic and will start to melt themselves out of place if you aren't quick enough with the soldering iron.

I just tried connecting my NTS-1 to a MIDI controller using one of the MIDI>aux adaptors that came with my Novation Mono Station and it didn't work. Both the MIDI cable and MIDI controller I used worked fine with the KORG Volca Drum, which requires no adaptor.. Is it likely that my NTS-1 connection didn't work because of the Novation adaptor? About some MIDI adapters working and some not working. I might have just found an explanation on the website of Retrokits, which sells special MIDI interfaces. (I'm not affiliated) A description of the RK-TRS-X interface "A lot of newer devices nowadays have a 3.5mm jack for MIDI-Out. Unfortunately - unlike the regular DIN5 plugs - there is no standard in this type of MIDI-Out. You could say there is a polarity issue. One manufacturer uses polarity A, the other uses B. Whatever TRS MIDI Output you may have on your device; With the RK-TRS-X (and a standard minijack-audio cable) you can convert any TRS-MIDI to DIN5 MIDI." So this might help some of you. Yesterday my NTS-1arrived, and I love it! I use it with a Arturia Keystep.

I went through the pains of the MIDI cable as well. The one that I knew was "Korg OK" was back ordered even a month or so ago. I ended up just building my own. @shix133 жыл бұрын
@@FreeBeat the logic on the channel number is because it is in HEX values. (base 16). a single digit in hex goes from 0 to 9 then A to F. Same thing happened to me, in error I bought a Type B MIDI adapter months ago, only to find that it doesn't work with the NTS-1, and that frustration, as well as the stupid hexadecimal notation for the NTS-1's MIDI channels, led me to write an article about it. Paying for return shipping wasn't worth it, so I kept it. Fast forward, and I picked up the Elektron Model:Samples (which pairs beautifully with the NTS-1, BTW). Elektron has this amazing feature in which you can change the 'polarity' of the MIDI signal sent out of the device! And for incoming MIDI signals, it automatically detects which type it is. So now I can use that Type B adapter to send MIDI from my Model:Samples to something like the Minilogue XD (which has full size MIDI ports), or to receive MIDI from any instrument. As far as I know Elektron is the first company to do this, but I hope it catches on! Makes life so much easier to not have to worry about adapter type.

@patrickbodine13003 жыл бұрын
The button that says"tap" on it, does not work. I have no arpeggio or sequence. The right-most button was what I was referring to in my original post. *Any* help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You mentioned a Korg driver for USB MIDI... Couldn't you just use a DAW as host to send MIDI ?

Hmm, could this setup be synced with a po ? If so, how about a synthwave jam with the arpegiator and a po 20 ? :P

Do you have to go through this process every time that you connect the NTS-1 to the Arturia? Or do they "remember" each other after the first time?
@VideoJunkXXL Жыл бұрын
The confused issue is, there are different TRS-Adaptors (TRS-a, TRS-b & TRS-x) done by manufactors while there don't got a Standard for this
@aaronblodgett2825 Жыл бұрын
Quick question. How are you getting the sound? Do you have speakers plugged into the NTS-1? Or does it have its own little speakers? Sorry kind of a dumb question but I'm new to this. Thank you
@FreeBeat Жыл бұрын
It has it's own little speaker, but for all of my content I plug the audio out of whatever I'm using into a recorder of some kind. For this video, it was the Zoom H5. For most of my current videos, I use the Zoom Livetrak L-12.

Got a question for ya - How would I use the key step as a controller for a 0coast while the nts lends its Effects? I really want the nts for the delay and other effects - thinking of also running my Grandmother through the nts at other times as well (without the 0coast…or maybe with it too?). Is this possible? Thanks so much! Love all your videos broo!
@FreeBeat2 жыл бұрын
Hook up the Keystep and 0coast like you normally would, then just run the output of the 0coast into the NTS-1 :)

If you're certain you have all the midi channels set properly then it is probably the wrong cable unfortunately

Can I use this with my Arturia MINILAB MK2?
@martinhaswell96713 жыл бұрын
The Minilab doesn’t have MIDI out so you have to connect both the NTS-1 (via USB) and the Minilab (also via USB) to your computer and then in Ableton route the MIDI from the Minilab to the NTS-1 and plug your headphones into the NTS-1’s audio out.

i think the keystep was made just for this nts-1. I got a Akai mpk25 and I cant get it to control the nts-1, should i just buy a keystep? im going crazy bro...
@dauhloweme81273 жыл бұрын
Will this allow me to play cords or will I need a firmware update for that?
@FreeBeat3 жыл бұрын
The nts-1 is monophonic, meeting that it can't play chords. There are a couple of workarounds via custom oscillators though.

Trying to use my beatstep with my nts 1 and cant get it to work, do you think i have the wrong midi to stereo cable?
@FreeBeat3 жыл бұрын
It very well could be, although I've never used the beatstep before so I'm not sure if there's any other settings I need to be changed. Definitely make sure that you have your midi channels matched up though.
@martinhaswell96713 жыл бұрын
I can get my Beatstep to talk to a NTS-1 using the white mono 3.5mm to MIDI female adaptor that came with the Beatstep plugged into a Type A MIDI male to TRS adaptor bought online. I’ve also made up a custom cable using two stereo TRS 3.5mm plugs like this: Beatstep end (mono) ring+sleeve connected together goes to NTS-1 tip, then Beatstep tip goes to NTS-1 ring.

Hey here's a handy heads up: Akai also adopted this same standard "type A midi-TRS" connection along with Korg, and the Akai Force for example, comes with three of these adapters. I lucked out and was able to borrow some from a friend. Also, thank you Arturia for making your off-standard type-B midi adapters white, so I don't mix them up (labelled em all anyway). I think Novations are also colored and are also type-B (off-standard, officially now).
