FreeBSD is a good alternate of Linux... But Linux compatibility is not at all perfect... it works though... You can make Linux Apps work basically inside a FreeBSD jail or chroot... FreeBSD emulates the system calls of Linux kernel 3.8 or something the one Ubuntu 18.04 have. My main issue is virtualization I have no idea how to use behyve I have to learn it and I need a virtual machine for Windows 10 or something I keep it when needed for like work thing. So that is why I removed it from my main PC

Glad to see you back again! And I look forward to your next OpenBSD install and cwm ricing.

love your videos man! I always have weird issues with FreeBSD, wouldn't bother me if OpenBSD wasn't a thing 😅

NICE to have you back, Dude. You actually motivated me to install an OpenBSD VM in a distrohacking session with josh lee, but I never got past the point of swapping out the default desktop with a dwm or cwm. Though it's my issue of not reading the manual on how to port it correctly I am looking forward to some hints of yours. take care man!

@shagen666 Make the file .xsession in your home folder. Add ‘cwm’ to it. Next time you log into X, it’ll load cwm instead of fvwm. Check out /etc/X11/xenodm/Xsession for the default x startup process and how it looks for ~/.xsession. Let us know if that helps!

@@k9w944 Thanks a lot man! This was exactly the right push in the right direction. I tried using cwm breifly, but just installed my good old beloved xmonad, with .xsession (which one should not forget to chmod +x) xenodm launches xmonad after login. Flawless experience so far, trying to fiddle with my configs. Browser and terminal is working so far, so at this point I could technically use it as a main driver. Though, I am stuggling with the proper resolution in Virtualbox, I just made a huge leap thanks to you guys! Appreciate it a lot -- thanks!

I was a previous user of TrueOS or PC-BSD, which was a desktop version of FreeBSD w/ the Lumina desktop. It was too bad that that got discontinued in favor of TrueNAS, forcing me to switch to Debian

Doesn't KDE, Gnome, XFCE and others work (well) on FreeBSD? Just curious. I tried FreeBSD and NomadBSD very briefly and my main issues was hardware support. On notebook it almost worked except I was unable to do anything with fans running at full speed, hibernate it or change screen brightness using keys. On PC network card (RTL8125) did not work and I had weird issues with X or XFCE. I would not mind using it, it's quite similar to how Linux looked like 20 years ago (before pam security, systemd, ...). However it's hard to find reasons why to use it if hardware support is worse and I guess BTRFS and ZFS are both good enough filesystems and performance does not really matter (unless you are trying to get most of some celeron based low power server or big server (farm) with very high load) as it differs in some extreme scenarios and not much.

Would you recommend OpenBSD or FreeBSD as a Desktop OS for someone coming form linux?
@Ametisti2 жыл бұрын
This was interesting, I've never used any version of BSD myself, only a few Linux versions (pretty much all Ubuntu based)
@k9w9442 жыл бұрын
Linux and the BSDs are good in different ways. I prefer OpenBSD and Fedora Linux. Let us know if you have any questions. We’ll try to answer.
@Ametisti2 жыл бұрын
@BoulderBro999 why? I might at some point, I think I recall looking at Arch briefly, I think it was the lack of GUI for the installer that turned me off from it. My introduction to Linux though was Mint, ran that with XFCE on a few netbooks as my main laptop for a few years. Not really willing to risk trying Linux for my main desktop though, Forza player for one thing.
@Ametisti2 жыл бұрын
@@k9w944 If that's the case, then what would you say is something BSD is good for specifically? I always thought it was kinda 'Like Linux but with less software' but never really looked into it much.
@k9w9442 жыл бұрын
@@Ametisti I assume Forza requires windows. That’s a good strategy to use Linux on another computer, to free up your main desktop for windows and the Forza app.
@k9w9442 жыл бұрын
@@Ametisti Good question! It’s true that Linux supports more software than the BSDs. I use Fedora for the apps and services I can’t use on OpenBSD. I like fedora more than Ubuntu or Debian based distros because fedora includes a newer kernel in its stable release. The BSDs and vanilla Arch Linux generally require you to use the terminal for many essential tasks including installing and upgrading software and the base system. I enjoy and prefer the command line and the terminal. In my experience OpenBSD commands are easier to understand and use than Linux commands. The BSD’s have what’s called a base system which is all developed or maintained in a single source code tree for each BSD flavor. OpenBSD has its own; FreeBSD has its own. A Linux distribution is made up of the Linux kernel, the gnu utilities, and distro specific tools. I find the base system of the BSDs to be better integrated and easier to understand and use. If I didn’t prefer using the terminal, none of that would be important to me. Many good Linux distributions can be used without using the terminal.
