Les Claypool is in a league of his own. I've never seen anyone play like he does. Primus was a perfect fit for the 90s. Mister Krinkle is wild, too.

It’s awesome to see Larry get his respect. He’s a super underrated guitarist
@corrob17 күн бұрын
right, and most people don't realize, he was instrumental in the creation of the entire Death Metal genre when he was a teen playing guitar in the band Possessed.

Exactly. Most bass guys that react to this video never say anything about Larry's playing.

Would be wild if a video surfaces of said concert. I wasn't aware of Primus until 1996 or so. Was lucky enough to see them with herb and brain.

This has always been one of my favourite Primus songs and definitely one of Les' absolute best, his playing is so damn bizarre but that's why he's still one of the rock bass GOATs
@extaxt984717 күн бұрын
Fun fact: It was difficult to move in the rubber suits so they filmed at half speed for the instruments and facial expressions and then sped it up in the edit. Adds to the surreal look of the clip.

That is pretty wild. I always wondered about the costumes and how they even did any of it. Wonder how they came p with the concept and how the people that had to make the costumes were thinking. Lol

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang's version of this song is my favorite Les Claypool bass line. So funky

What a great break down 🔥 I love the fact that you went to the live version to see how Les played it. Also you actually sound like the music you are breaking down.

The rhythm has a Possum Kingdom kinda vibe. The song is part country, part psychedelic among other things. So trippy.

Larry comes from the classic thrash/death metal scene. The album Seven Churches, from his metal band Possessed is held in the same high regard as early Slayer and Metallica, amongst metalheads. I think some of those dissonant chords he plays in Primus are pulled directly from that genre.

As a guitarist, and a huge Primus fan, I've always been fascinated by Ler. What he plays isn't even remotely difficult, it's more "why the hell would anyone even think to play that, and why does it sound so awesome?". It's extremely clever playing that just adds to the madness that Les creates. Also, Herb is a massively underrated drummer as well.

Les is one of the great bassists, IMO. Song is a little different, but that's Primus. lol. If you are not already familiar, I suggest 2 bassists that I highly recommend you check out. Eugene from Jinjer, and Misa from Band Maid. For Jinjer , most start with the live session of "Pisces", if you want a newer song then go with "Someone's Daughter" For Band Maid, suggest "Hate?" (official live).

I think it's worth pointing out a lot earlier on in the analysis that claypool is also an extraordinary vocalist, & capable of holding down several rhythms at the same time- right hand, left hand & voice. have you watched the video for "jerry was a race-car driver" or "john the fisherman"?
@MrGul9 күн бұрын
I believe the strike technique word you're looking for is "rasgueado" which comes from traditional flamenco guitar playing.
@Electricdynamite7 күн бұрын
Fun Fact: The costumes were so cumbersome for this video that they played the song at 75% speed and sped the footage up to match the record version.

Since the band couldn't move/play at regular speed in those suits, they had to record at slower timing/speed, and then speed it up to make it look 'natural'

Love Les Claypool, what a unique talent! Primus is one of those bands that wouldn't have worked if it wasn't 3 such superb musicians with a shared vision I remember showing this music video to my dad on MTV back in the day, he was very confused XD If you want some more fun bass stuff to explore, it's a very different style to Primus, but if you're up for some j-rock/j-funk take a look at Gacharic Spin, their bassist lists Les Claypool as a big influence and has released a series of slap bass instructional DVD's Their song MindSet has a lot of fun bass, and is a popular song to start with for people interested in checking them out, but most of their songs feature cool and interesting bass ideas

Apart from your uncomfortable resemblance to the late Charles Manson, I find your video quite informative. Am I a Primus fan? Of course not. Do I recognise greatness? Absolutely. Been following Primus since they did the old Headbanger's Ball theme in the late 80s/early 90s. Claypool is a madman, so, as I stopped because I love a musician's opinion, I do wonder where you stand on Justin Chancellor? I'm sure you've done your share of Tool videos, but as I just found you a minute ago, I thought I'd ask. And now that Herbie's retired, what are we to do? Y'know, watching this, you're not old enough to remember the Headbanger's Ball, are you? Seriously, I loved how informative your video was. And it must be a real gas to be able to play that stuff. I appreciate having it laid out so a non-bass player can see the magick, too. Great fun!

You have a Bass Channel and haven't done any BAND-MAID? You have to do a video on MISA. Her name is ALL CAPS, preferably chanted 3 times, as in MISA MISA MISA!!!. Check out BAND-MAID's song 'Hate?' LIVE. It has a Guitar and Bass, Call & Response, "Battle" that must not be missed! They also have a collaboration with The Warning called 'SHOW THEM'.
