These religious types always have to be the minority. The poor, persecuted minority. Oppressed and bravely fighting the good fight. This poses a bit of a problem when they live in a country where more than eighty percent of the population share their religion, as do very close to one hundred percent of the political leaders. The solution is to redefine in narrower terms: Anyone who accepts evolution can't be a real Christian, anyone who isn't pro-life can't be a Christian, and do on. Until they reach that nice snug place where real Christians are once again a tiny and persecuted minority.

Even after researching it, I discovered many Catholics, specifically the majority I I read comments from and interacted with didn't even know what it was and that it didn't refer to Jesus' virgin birth. I was raised in the Lutheran church, but attended numerous other churches of varying doctrines throughout my life. Not one had ever used the term immaculate conception, or ever taught that Mary was without sin, let alone original sin, because it's not found anywhere in the Bible or the other somewhat contemporary books written at the time. It seemed to only be found in catholic church traditions before it was declared as divine truth in the 1800s.

How does that Bodie guy sleep at night, claiming that the slavery in the Bible is just indentured servitude?? Just read the entire chapter of Leviticus 25. It spends most of the chapter spelling out indentured servitude, and then in verses 44-46 explains that there's a whole different system for people who are not fellow Israelites: _"44 As for your male and female slaves whom you may have-you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you. 45 Then, too, it is out of the sons of the sojourners who live as aliens among you that you may gain acquisition, and out of their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession. 46 You may even bequeath them to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another."_ So it's *race-based* distinction, a permanent, heritable status as property... or what we commonly call slavery. Human permanent property that can be willed to the next generation is not "indentured servitude" by any stretch of the imagination. How can he sleep at night? How can he look at himself in the mirror?
@adambartlett1147 жыл бұрын
The answer... Simple, he does not attempt to live with himself or look in the mirror... He feels no compulsion to be decent or honorable or righteous... Indeed, in his mind he's totally in the right & anything is justifiable, if it means he converts a single soul or at a min, at least informs them of his "truth". As far as he's concerned, he does not have any need to be upstanding & honest; a soul saved by lies is still better then a soul lost for the truth. He's certainly a very nasty, abusive, heartless, despicable little boy; but that's really the only way anyone can be a part of the Abrahamic cults by being as corrupt & cruel as him. Realistically, you're correct, he's lying he's ass off about damn near all (if not all) things he's said. Unlike many, he's fully aware of both the evil of what he's doing & the blatant evil of the cult but he doesn't care because he still maintains his wealth/position/power. Adam

Great video as always. 😃 As you've touched upon. Dogmatic religion stems from a psychological need for group identity and belonging, together with a need for certainty and meaning. There is a strong impulse in human beings to define ourselves, whether it’s as a Christian, a Muslim, a socialist, an American, a Republican, or as a fan of a sports club. This urge is closely connected to the impulse to be part of a group, to feel that you belong, and share the same beliefs and principles as others. And these impulses work together with the need for certainty-the feeling that you "know," that you possess the truth, that you are right and others are wrong. At the root of these impulses is a fundamental anxiety and sense of lack, caused by our sense of being distinct individuals, existing in separation to other people, and a world "out there." This generates a sense of being "cut off," like fragments that were once part of a whole. There is also a sense of vulnerability and insecurity, caused by our insignificance in the face of the world. As a result, we need to "bolster" our sense of self, to strengthen our identity. Dogmatic religion is dangerous because it creates an in-out group mentality. It encourages people to withdraw empathy and morality from other groups, to see them as inferior and ignorant. Other groups can be seen as general entities, rather than as collections of different individuals. And when two groups are thrown together, with their different beliefs clashing, different beliefs that are an affront because they suggest that their own beliefs may be wrong, conflict and warfare are always close at hand.
@Uldihaa5 жыл бұрын
I'd say that there is something fundamental in human psychology that urges us (almost to the point of compulsion) to defend whatever groups and communities that have accepted us as a member. That includes religions, political parties, nations, friends, family, fandoms of all kinds--- no matter what, our knee-jerk reaction is to defend them, even when they are clearly in the wrong.

Tom In Space I'm not sure that Ken Ham willfully peddles nonsense. I felt he was quite sincere in the debate with Bill Nye. Having said that, I think his main goal is to proove the Bible is true with whatever weak claim they can come up with. Maybe he apologizes to God every night for how bad a job he does. His main problem, I think, is that he is mentally unable to question the Bible and that the rest of his worldview has to fit in with that.

Regarding adultery, my understanding is that in the ancient Jewish culture the definition was not the same as we have today. In biblical usage, adultery refers specifically to sex between a man (married or not) and a women who is the wife of another man. That is, it's impossible by definition for an unmarried woman to commit adultery. Adultery was seen as a crime against the woman's husband, as it was an assault upon his property (his wife) which caused it to lose value. You can see this demonstrated in Judges, when Samson has sex with a prostitute. A scene notable for how casually it is treated - the only reason it is even mentioned is to explain Samson's presence in the following section. As the prostitute was unmarried, no crime was committed. The very next morning he is up and doing the superhero thing, showing that God evidently didn't care: Premarital sex is perfectly fine for men, but not for women because it is a crime against their owner (husband or father). The prostitute is an exception, of course. Can't really drop her value any lower than it already is.

when it comes to separation of church and state in the US, Virginia was where that happened in writing with adopted documents composed for that purpose, but the federal government never intended for the first amendment to separate the church from the state.... if you read the debates on the bill of rights (Creating the Bill of Rights, by Helen Veit), you will see in great detail what took place (if you don’t read, then you’re always going to be in the dark), and in the debates, there was NEVER any mention of the words separation of church and state, nor the idea imparted by anyone of the concept of separation of church and state..... what took place was Madison TRIED to defend the religious liberty of the people, but the religious liberty of the state governments is what won out with the clause as it was intended and adopted to do….. I even corrected Aron Ra and he thanked me for the information when I point out to him that it was New Hampshire that gave us the origin of the first amendment clause. Everything that Madison wanted to do was foiled by other “assholes” that steered the debates away from what Madison wanted, yet he’s given credit for the whole document…. Lol…just a thought…. Also, when I saw Dan Barker at the local Oasis meeting when he was in Houston a month ago, I asked him my patented question to find out just how well read they are, “have you ever read the letter Jefferson wrote to Rev. Samuel Miller” to which he cleverly countered my question with his question of “which one”… I was mentally floored with the quick and admirable whit Dan has, but of course his answer was no……. enjoy your stuff….

It'll forever be a mystery why Ken Ham didn't bring on a FFRF spokesperson to clarify the issue with the government official's Twitter activity.

johnelee2k93 yea yea we heard it all before.. If that shit was even remotely true you could show evidance. But instead you have a convicted tax fraud insisting magic is a thing. Tell me again what Paul and i have been convicted of. Dont get all mad because I'm better at insults, you premenstrual blood fart.

johnelee2k93 do you need a hug? I'm getting the feeling that you could really use a hug. Or benzodiazepines. Those are often more effective than hugs. But hugs are nice too. Hell, try both. You'll feel much better. (I'm trying a different approach in these situations)

I'm skeptical of Dan's claim that "shalom" was exclusively used as a militaristic term in that time period. That doesn't seem to match up with the etymology that's provided in the poorly-cited wiki article for the biblical use of the word. *sigh* why no sources wiki why wiki why

I can freely attest and admit personally, that religious belief (in my case, mormonism) can indeed be equated to bullying. It not only bullies people, especially children, into accepting things against their will and better judgment, but also produces bullies who, by their own right, don't see themselves as bullies. The difference mainly being in that, whatever a bully traditionally does is for their own pleasure and entertainment, but a religious bully does so in the _belief_ that they're actually helping out. I really didn't think I was doing harm - exactly the opposite in fact, when I was telling people to stay in the closet, keep one's sexual and gender "preferences" (as I thought at the time, that they were down to a matter of simple choice) away from the eyes of God and that a righteous life is inherently in direct opposition to a natural one. _That the natural human being is in fact God's enemy,_ was verbatim what we were taught at sunday school, and that we are helping poor distracted souls when we are "enlightening" them of their life of sin. This is the insiduous nature of religion: The true bullies are the ones at the top, very much like Ken Ham here, who enjoy all the benefits they gather from tax incentives etc, and basing their entire lives and careers on excercising and expanding their religious practices. They are the ones who stand to gain most of indoctrinating children; not at all the children themselves.

I heard that the whole stoning thing was about them not following the true law about adultery, that they should also get the man, and have witnesses, and that he wrote these things in sand to remind them that they're just being vigilantes and not following the actual letter of the law and that made them reconsider.

I see no problem with elected officials drawing on positive aspects of any religion's holy books combined with the best secular sources to come up with real world solutions to the immense challenges facing mankind today...This would not be an endorsement of any one religion, but an acknowledgement that they do have something positive to offer society creating a win-win scenario.

Politicians know the rules well enough to avoid 'official' twitter accounts. If the account isn't directly governmental they can dodge all those pesky regulations.

On the topic of slavery, it is important when talking about Hebrews enslaving other Hebrews for 7 years to point out that if during that time the master provided the slave with a wife and they had a child, the wife and child were the master's slaves forever and they didn't get to go free on the 7th year with the male slave. However, if the male slave wanted to stay with his wife and child, the master could take him to the town square and use an awl to pierce his ear to show that he was his slave for life and they could also be passed on to subsequent generations. So this was probably a commonly used trap used by Hebrew slave owners.

Evolution & creation can co-exist cause one cannot stand alone by itself. Everything in the physical world was/is/will be created (plants, animals, people, etc) & all living things change & adapt to their environment which is the fundamental concept of evolution...

Ham has a video posted on the FB Ark debacle site. 30 Sept 2017. He goes to interview some of the "crowd" and quickly moves on when he realises that they are staff members. Later in the same video a morbidly obese staff member also "found" in the crowd says everybody should try the fried chicken.

It’s the same crowd that insists that Catholics are not Christians at all for worshipping Mary or something, when I was one I was used to that accusation and Baptists missionaries were telling me I was going to hell in an indirect way just for that, so that kind of reply doesn’t surprise me. Some groups and cults like Fundamentalist Baptists think they’re the only “true” Christians around

If there is a God, denying science, is denying the truthful revelation of God. Theologians foolishly expect to find God in ancient written stories of unknown origin and authors ... when science is the best process ever developed by man for discovering truth. The time to hold a justified belief about a God is once science has produced evidence of a God .... no evidence yet, stay an Atheist.

Atheism isn't a religion, it's a religious position. It's a religious position that actually is accepted by some religions (specifically thinking of some sects of Buddhism). It doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of religion.
