Album recommendations: Philly Joe Jones - "Milestones" Tony Williams - "Seven Steps To Heaven" Roy Haynes - "We Three" What are some of your favourite tunes/albums that these drummers have played on? And can we give it up for Roy Haynes who is still killing it and making music at 94!

@Topjunkie I agree about jazz drumming being the most complex. My favorite drummer is Roy Haynes so I know what you mean. But that's a separate issue. There are jazz drummers who struggle getting into rock rhythms, not because it's more complex but because it's just so different. Japanese is by most metrics a more complex language than English, but the Japanese often struggle with English just because it's so different, to use a hopefully easy analogy. As for metal, which drummers do you have in mind? The best and most innovative drumming I've heard over the past 10 years has mostly been metal, especially the drummers from Plebeian Grandstand and Deathspell Omega

Damn that kit sounds amazing. Oh and you sound pretty great too, Steve! :) Great explanations and love how excited you get about this stuff. Sometimes I watch these vids and it feels like the person explaining it is discussing a topic they really don’t care much about or aren’t as animated by as maybe perhaps they once were . Nice to see someone so passionate about their instrument, even when sometimes being a full time musician can cause people to look at their instrument with less excitement and more of just a job. Appreciate what you’re doing here and on Instagram

Love your lesson here. Very helpful to this guitarist learning drums. I once had a band in Santa Fe with jazz drummer Bryan Lewis. He took lessons with Tony Williams when Tony was 16 years old in NYC, in exchange for Bryan giving Tony driving lessons in his truck! Fun story. Also, don't forget my friend, Pittsburgh legend Roger Humphries, Horace Silver's drummer.
