In his breakdown of the original drums, Nic touched upon something that I think is at the heart of the style difference between rock & jazz. His instinct as a rock drummer was to add his weight to the big moments, amplifying with hits what the horns were doing, whereas the jazz approach was alternating between light and dark (playing or silence) and using the drums to colour that light. Ironically, despite saying he's not Larnell Lewis, by bringing that rock approach to jazz, he made it fusion.

Sometimes we forget the weight of the name he carries too easily. He is humble, well-trained, young and down to earth, he has a great career ahead of him, he did very well on the tour with his father, playing with authentic sacred monsters and in front of very demanding audiences, and in this video he has put himself on the line in the best way possible by tackling a genre that is not in his league with intelligence and musical taste. It really doesn't take long to get to the point where you can just jam along with pretty much anything on your instrument. Only a few years. You could do it too, you have the capability within you. Best thing to do is just take your instrument around with you all day long and just play along with everything, like music in TV shows and music in the ads in the ad breaks, and playing along with the radio, and so on. Do that every day and you'll quickly be able to jam along with anything, with ease. It's really not a difficult thing to learn how to do. At worst, it's an intermediate level thing. But beginners (i.e. people who've only been playing for like 1 to 3 years) can learn it too. You are more than capable of doing this yourself, whether that's on the drums, or on another instrument like guitar, or piano. This is what Jimi Hendrix did for practice. All day every day he'd have his guitar around his shoulders with the shoulder strap and would just play it all day long, while doing everything else, like he'd cook some food and be playing along while the food cooks. It's easy to get to a point where you feel and sound completely natural improvising and jamming along with any piece of music, when you spend a few years or even just a few months playing your instrument all day long like this, playing along with every song or jingle or whatever that you hear.

In the original the drummer sits back and supports the horns, making it sound much more relaxed. Nic’s drums push the track along so much so that it become a drum-centred track and the horns support him.

I think that is from the genre he is familiar with, still great drum work imo

The fact that any drummer hasn’t heard OG whiplash after seeing the movie. but he still nailed probably one of the hardest song to get right. Props

Wow. The apple sure didn’t fall far from the tree. Always loved Phil’s playing - but Nic really has some intricate chops. Well done!

"Sometimes drumers should learn to shut up" - that 3rd version with all the drums is fire! btw Nic´s arrangements does not sound out of place it has respect for the feel of the song IMO, so i like it. Usually when people want to impress with prowess is when they damage a song with some out of place drumming

Absolutely blown away...so well done! I love to play the drums, and watching Phil's son bust out a groove like this...makes me want to get my boys out on the kit big time!

For me it is crazy to see Nic Collins count a 7/8 beat, since his farther, Phil Collins, is the one who is famous for this time signature. Phil made this odd time into his trademark on The Cinemashow on Selling England by the Pound..... my nr. 1 track by Genesis..... And Nic,- fantastic video,- I love it. Greetings from Denmark.
