Harvey has got a couple of things in his playing that almost none of the others have... subtlety and space. He's not afraid to let the rhythms BREATHE...unlike most if the rest who pile on the notes, filling up all the space. A master rhythm craftsman and somebody we should all pay attention to and learn from!

His ghost notes are smooth as hell, on all drums, not just the sane drum. He makes one drum sound like several ones. I also noticed he switches from traditional do matched grip when necessary. Truly a great drummer. And overall very good lessons. :)

Interesting fact: The Herbie Hancock album, "Head Hunters" (1973) was the biggest selling “contemporary” Jazz album of all time, until George Benson released "Breezin" (1976). The common denominator of both of these records is Harvey Mason, Sr. #provenhitmaker

This video reminded me that our instrument does not have to be molested to sound good. If I had a choice to study with anyone, it would be Mr. Harvey Mason.... Good job Drumeo - thank you Harvey

In the tapestry of drumming, Harvey is the silk...I sat so close to him at the Baked Potato in LA, I could have touched his drums. Dave Grusin piano, Lee Rittenour guitar, Ernie Watts sax, I think Ron Carter on bass. As great as it gets. What an honor to see and hear him play... God bless and thanks for all you bring...

Harvey Mason ,,wow, it doesn't get any better when it comes to making sense of the main role of playing drums, not about being flashy,,, just playing the music and making it sound great.. but the genius can be flashy too when the music calls for it. His drum sounds and textures are amazing.

Man I do agree with you 100% I really can't understand why it took Harvery Mason this long to show up... no matter what you say, Harvery Mason just did not realize he had a huge followers. Man when I first heard him with Herbie Hancock, 73 or 74 ! I was like " who is this drummer that can plays in that time syncopation? Take Five, pops got a brand new bag, cold sweat the girl from Ipanema, all of these drums sycophants had a profound effect on lots of drummers in the funk and jazz world, but when I heard chameleon!! No! It must be a machine, yeah, a machine, ain't no drummer can play like that, that's impossible, where's the ONE, or the one-na- two-an - the excetera excetera, no it must be a drum machine, oh everyone knows Herbie Hancock is sorta of side ways with his music, Naaa, there ain't no drummers who can play like that.

Absolutely thrilled you guys have finally got Harvey on. Proper Legend. I know anyone who knows him have there fave tunes but here's a few that still blow me away today. Donald Byrd : Change, the underrated hi-hat work on that track is killing. Wilbert Longmire : Black is the Colour, His groove on the whole track is just relentless and last but certainly not least George Benson : The World is a Ghetto, Daaaamn!! The most amount of freedom I've ever heard from any drummer but he keeps it so very tasteful, also the best groove outro you'll ever hear. No, Thank U Mr. Mason.

Mr. Mason if you see this, which im sure you wont, so ill speak first person. I studied harvey's styel starting with what he did on "so this is love", george Bensen. The drums during middle part solo, and at the tail end of the song. This playing styel helped emensily in developing my own styel. In fact if you listen to me play you'll find some familiarityes. Intermeshed with in my own personal styel. Because of that George album i spent hours, weeks months playing back at slow spead and compleatly learned the drum parts Mr. Mason played for the entire song this is now a pernament part of my drum playing styel

Harvey is a gentle force behind the drums. Simply a touch god. Seen and met him several times with Lee Ritenour. He showed me to reverse the hi hats cymbals. Heavy top which is more meaty but less effort to perform. Soulful is not descriptive enough for Mr. Mason.

harvey mason used to be called swiss clockwork because his timing was perfect. he was the one drummer that everyone wanted on their record. his sound and above all precision on the drums was unmatched. his snare on dave grusin's rag bag from the mountain dance album is what a drummer's dreams are made of. only carlos vega could match that with grp's live in session. george benson's valdez in the country is another gem. or harvey's work with the brecker brothers and the headhunters. harvey mason deserves so much more respect than he's gotten so far.
