Hi Nick, which lenses do you suggest? What do you prefer and where to buy? Big thanks for the effort and review.
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. I love the Olympus Zuiko 12mm f2.0 lens (equivalent of around 24mm) as it is wide enough to be a little more forgiving when you slightly miss focus or make unwanted movements when using on the Osmo. I also have the Olympus Zuiko 45mm f1.8 lens (equivalent of around 90mm) which is less forgiving in both respects but is also tack sharp and great for interviews etc. You may want to look at a zoom lens but be aware that you need one that won't alter the balance such as the Olympus M ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ. I think I bought my lenses from SLR Hut and Amazon.

Hi Nick, nice review. I am considering the X5, but is it worth the upgrade from the X3? It only tops out at 60 mbps (which is the same as the X3 and GoPro Hero 4 Black) for 4K and I heard 4K should be at 100 mbps. I also like the simplicity of microSD cards and don't want to mess around with a SSD hard drive on the X5R nor want to spend that much money. Or should I just stick with the X3?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes, it is most definitely worth it! Even with 60mbps you get 12.8 stops of dynamic range which makes a huge difference. On top of that, the chance to change lenses (I use the 12mm for most video work and the 45mm for some video and more photography work) and not forgetting full manual control over aperture etc. I would say go for it, especially if you plan to make films or work professionally...

Great review Nick. A quick question if I may. You have the GH4 and the Osmo x5, which one do you feel performs better with inside filming? I'm assuming you filmed the review with the GH4? I have the Osmo x3 already, but I'm wondering if I should upgrade the x3 to the x5, or get the GH4 with metabones speedbooster with sigma 18-35mm lens? Would love to hear your opinion?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan. I filmed the review with 2 cameras, the head on shots with a Sony EX1 and the close ups with the GH4. Hard to say which to get. The X5 is superb and not bad in low light at all...used it during the first dance at a wedding recently. The GH4 is better and with a speedbooster, even more so. Then when you add an external recorder for pro res hq output, and stabiliser, it goes through the roof in terms of quality footage. Maybe wait until the GH5 is released and pick up a super cheap GH4? But then, the X5 on the Osmo is pretty cool...not helping much am I?

Great information well done. I was unaware how versatile this could be. Question: What are your thoughts on the X5 on the Gimbal for Real Estate shots of interior and exterior along with doing videos? Do you think it's versitile enough to handle all the shots? IF so any lens adapters suggested? Thanks.
@NickStubbs7 жыл бұрын
Thanks James, appreciate the feedback. It could be good for real estate but I would definitely add the Z-Axis adapter to it for super stability. As it is in this video, you still get a bit of movement up and down when you walk with it. I have had this set up on my car and also walking around a couple dancing at a wedding and it works well but yes, get the Z-Axis for real estate walk throughs... In an ideal world, I would use my GH5 and Ronin M ; )

Hi Nick, great video, nice little drive around Weymouth. I have the osmo with X3 camera and really want to upgrade to the X5 as the quality just looks so much better. I have a couple of questions if don't mind, what lens would you recommend and how does the focus work as the X3 is fixed so does the X5 have an auto focus mode or do you just set it as infinity. If I do get it I can only afford one lens so which would be the best one to get? Thanks in advance.
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
+Lee Booth The X5 does have autofocus but I would still use manual focus. Set it to infinity unless you are close to your subject and if you are close, use manual focus so focus is set in for the duration with no "hunting". I would heartily recommend the Olympus Zuiko 12mm f2 lens for most situations with the Osmo. The 45mm is a great lens too but 12mm is a great place to start...or even the 14-42 if you fancy a zoom?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
+Valentino Photography Not a bad lens at all. Don't own it myself but heard good reports. However, I would still recommend the 12mm Oly over the 15mm. It's wider and better quality : )

Fantastic overview, I've just bought the Osmo with X3 camera, love it, except for the sound. As you say, even the FlexiMic picks up noise from the cooling fan and gimbal motors, I did think that I would just extent the cable to place it a bit further from them, but having seen your review, I think a better Mic such as the Rode is the way forward. I'm about to upgrade from an F550 to the Inspire 1 Pro and plan to interchange the X5 between the platforms , it's been great to see it all integrating so well, the mounting plate looks well made, I like the way it locks into the original accessory socket on the grip. The car mount looks to work brilliantly, I'm planning to get some footage of my car from the Inspire, some footage onboard would be excellent too! Great review, have just subscribed!

Hi Nick great review and big help as I'm just about to go for the X5 for my Cosmo. Can you tell me how is the X5 in low light at weddings i.e.: the Dancing? And will the X5 still work with the OsmoPamo software?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments : ) The pano software from dji doesn't work with the X5 until a future update. Haven't really shot much in low light but if you shoot in cine-d and 4k, you should lose a fair bit of noise when you bring the levels down and downsize to 1080.
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
@François Dequidt - I am posting a reply here as I am getting this "comment failed to post" error with KZbin...grrr... The X5 gives you much higher quality and control over the X3. The new firmware update: www.dji.com/newsroom/news/dji-releases-new-firmware-for-the-inspire-1-and-osmo ...gives extra battery power (although I still keep a spare battery on me as I do with most of my kit) and turns the fan off during recording. I would say that the difference is significant and well worth the upgrade... Manual focussing is just something you have to get used to for most video work. Nothing worse than filming a job only to get home to find the focus was "hunting" in and out of focus. Practice focussing "visually" whilst keeping the aperture at a setting that gives good depth of field for what you are recording, especially if moving about. Learn about hyperfocal distance...that will help you to nail focus too. www.all-things-photography.com/hyperfocal-distance/

You could buy a GH4 and Ronin M for that so unless you have an Inspire 1 with X5/12mm lens already, I would go that route (GH4 etc). However, if you already own a bunch of the kit above, the Osmo is well worth it. I used it on my car bonnet again today for a client job...love it.

Hi Nick, great review. I keep coming back to this video as I am on the edge of purchasing the Osmo with the X5 camera. I am just a little nervous as most of the videos I have seen online are quite bad quality. I don't know if it's the X5's low bit rate or if it's youtube and Vimeo compression doing it....or just user error and grading/compressing it too much. When I go abroad I tend to use a Sony RX100 iii due to its small size but really nice image quality. I don't know if you have used or seen footage from the little Sony before, but if so would you say the X5 is as good as that in terms of image quality? I know we are paying for the ease of use when it comes to the X5 and the Osmo system, but it just seems too expensive to purchase if the image quality is as bad as I am seeing.....considering the Sony Rx100 iii seems to look much nicer. Many Thanks
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart. It is possibly down to user error and not understanding how a manual camera works to get the best from it. I have seen poor results from people using the Canon 5D range which is a superb camera (Mark I, II and III). Learn the camera. However, having never used the Sony but having seen results, I would say it probably tops the X5 but as you say, you are paying for the ease of use and flexibility. If you have, or are going to get an Inspire, it is an amazingly versatile set up. Here is a shoot from last week using the X5/Osmo set up on my car and from the Inspire. Client was very happy! vimeo.com/175816315
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
P.s. The camera shoots at 60mbps but I suspect many people output it at a lower rate. Minimal processing and 50-60mbps output can work really well.
@stuartcohen44848 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, thank you very much for such a quick response! Great example on your vimeo channel too! I won't be getting in to the drone side of things so the X5 wouldn't benefit me in that respect. I had purchased a gimbal system in the past to use with the Sony RX100 iii and also the 5D Mark iii but it was one of those things that I didn't use a lot due to it being a hassle to transport and also it had major issues of just not working from time to time and was too risky to use on professional shoots. One of the only times it did work okay was when I tested it with the little Sony which you can see here: vimeo.com/111552133 The Osmo sounds amazing....you can put it in your ruck sake and take it anywhere. If the X5 was a bit cheaper I think I would get it no questions asked....but if the camera is not even up to the quality of the RX100 iii then I think I might just wait to see if they bring out a better camera at that price. Thanks again Nick!

Whoops...just re-read this on my PC (was on phone before) and I was thinking of the Sony RX10 II...sorry (www.sony.co.uk/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-cameras/dsc-rx10m2). I think the X5 is possibly better than the RX100 (especially when you downsize 4K to 1080p) although I have not seen enough footage to make a complete comparison. Great test by the way...I like it : )

I am thinking about the X5 on my Osmo because of the much better image quality, low light and focus distance. There is one thing i heard about: The focus isn't pretty good, way too slow and inaccurate. Can you confirm it?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
I can't, sorry. I only use manual focus which I recommend for any video work. However, it can be tricky using the iPad to focus...use peaking where available.

Hello Nick ! Thanks a lot for your video. The problem that I have is that I don´t have Focus Peaking when I use the X5 on the Osmo. When I use the X5 with my Inspire, Focus Peaking works. I don´t know why. Do you have an idea ?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
I think peaking only works on larger screens such as the iPads but not Smartphones. I will have to look into that but it doesn't work with my iPod Touch 6...
@marcokusterprivat83658 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your quick answer Nick. 1.OK, but you said you are focusing manualy. How will you focus precise with a small display without peaking control. This could´t be the solution for serious working with the osmo/X5. With this workflow you are just lucky if you have the focus set right. 2. Like I wrote with the Inspire it works. When I try it with the Osmo I work with the same Smart-Device (I-Pad Mini Retina) and it does´t work.

His sorry I've only just found you on here. Does the x5 have continuous auto focus please. And do you think the iPhone 12 would be as good on a gimble. As I jave the later but I'm thinking of buying this for low light vlogging
@NickStubbs2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for commenting. I'm pretty sure that it does NOT have continuous AF. You need to tap the screen to focus. As for the iPhone 12, it produces stunning video but will never match a 4/3rds sensor. However, if using for social media, it will absolutely do fine. It just won't do a few of the things a "real" camera will do especially in low light. Low light is a difficult one. Where possible, add extra light because there are very few vlogging cameras that give clean, high ISO footage. The Panasonic GH5s is very good but a lot bigger. If you wanted to go that route, wait until the GH6 comes out very soon. That should be a superb, all round camera! Finally, look at my latest video. Using one of these lights on a Go Pro 9 or 10 is perfect for vlogging. Hope this helps and all the best for 2022 👍✌️

Brilliant thanks for your time - I have a Nikon D70 and was either going to buy a Osmo for stabalizer footage or buy a beholder DS1 so this review has been very helpful.

great review , thanks! I really like the X5, however the color on your videos looks really flat... like a gopro. Discovered LUTs for GoPro, which made an incredible difference. do they make LUTS for Osmo? it's the rig you test vs. my GH4 and something like a CameTV gimbal.... I'm paralyzed ... help me ;)
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Thanks and the colour was purposely made to look like that using Film Convert Pro 2.0...horses for courses I guess (I was having a play that day : ). Osmo isn't a patch on the GH4 (especially with the Ronin M) IMO.
@thatsaloadofcrap8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the SPEEDY reply. :) For someone who doesn't need super heavy duty (just reliable), what gimbal do you like for the GH4? ...sound like you favor the Ronin, which is on my list, but it's a little too bulky, probably prefer something you can hold in one hand. Cheers!

This is a recent release and looks incredibly stable...although a little pricey, might be worth a look: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1278590-REG/ikan_ec1_beholder_handheld_3_axis.html Here is a video showing it off: facebook.com/thevonwong/videos/10154122352248515/

Cool! Thanks! Both B&H and Amazon are out of stock, and no reviews :( At a price point of $950, it'd better be perfect... If it is, I'm all in. otherwise, it's another jump to get something like the Ronin or the Osmo w/X5

i asked DJI, and apparently this is only possible with Apple-products, due to Androids incapabilities with sharing cellular with wifi. That was what DJI said, and i guess it is correct. I know Androids are capable of sharing cellular over wifi, but only if you connect another device with password. DJIdevices cannot connect to the mobile device, it is mobile devices that connects to DJI's wifi signal. Maybe there is an app available that make the Androids capable of this that i am unaware of?

Ok I have ONE questions & one issue? Everytime you use the osmo do you have to enter the passcode? When I connect to the osmo wifi, I always get the the connection status window, asking to accept terms of the login, when I hit yes, it tries to connect to google.com but will get an error and I'll just close it and then I'm able to continue video but then it keeps on dropping the OSMO WIFI connection?? Could this be the handle?? I've tried it on different wifi networks and I get the same result. I'm at a lose?
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Sounds strange. All I can say is that whenever I connect to Osmo, after the initial set up, it finds the signal and connects automatically...hope you get it sorted.

I really wish there was something like a lightning cable that hardwire it to the iPod, because it's really slow and annoying doing it over wifi. Most times, the image doesn't even come up for a long time, and I'm also using the iPod touch 6 dedicated only for this device.

I shoot a lot of live events with my GH4, and was thinking about buying the OSMO with the X5, but I was concerned about its low light capability. I know someone that has an OSMO with the X3 and it looks very grainy in low light. ThankS!
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
+Bobster986 I may test this soon but I think the X5 is way better than the X3...mainly due to the fact it has a larger sensor.
@Bobster9868 жыл бұрын
+Nick Stubbs I heard the it's the same sensor that's in my GH4 so that's what I'm thinking, but the firmware is different in the X5 versus the Panasonic. I look forward to your follow up tests.
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that plus the GH4 had a higher bit rate of 100mbps for 4k (X5 is 60mbps) and 200mbps for HD so more info recorded meaning slightly better life light recording there too...

Hi Nick, we travel quite a bit and I am by no means an experienced videographer. Looking at getting a Sony A6500, and possibly a gimbal for it later. Would the X5 be a better option for someone who wants to shoot videos similar to the one linked below? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGfTlaqags-ekKc We are shooting a lot of action shots of vintage trucks driving (in a lot of dirt), and doing a lot of interviews. I'm worried that I will have a hard time with the focus on the X5, sound quality will be bad, and also that the video quality/adaptability of it will be poor compared to the sony A6500. My thoughts on the A6500 - I am worried about being able to get steady shots (especially action shots), and I think it will be much better at everything else. Do you suppose it would be better to stick with a more traditional setup and learn to work with it and master it or get something like the X5?
@johnsoncityaerialphotograp72017 жыл бұрын
Hi Austin, I'm a self proclaimed Sony fan boy and shoot with both the DJI Zenmuse X5 and a Sony A7II. The a6500 and a gimbal would be a much better option I feel for what you described. With a6500's going for $750-900 now and say a Zhiyun Crane for $400..minus lens you would still be at the same price point as just the x5 camera, no osmo handle or external mic (The DJI mic sounds like you're talking into a tin can). The a6500 has one of the best AF in the APS-C world and with better bit rates (Sony XAVCS 100mb) than the X5's sad 60 mb per sec rate. The biggest pitfall of the X5 for video is it doesn't AF per se. you have to touch-to-focus and it misses focus often. I love my Zenmuse X5 for realtor work in the air on our Inspire and interior videos on the Osmo, but for moving and travel videography the a6500 would be much better. Hope this helps.

This is not cheep if I have to go out and buy an iPhone. The camera needs zoom. Nothing worse than a fixed wide lens for all your shots.
@NickStubbs8 жыл бұрын
In that respect, I guess Go Pro will never sell any cameras ; ) Seriously though, I agree it isn't cheap but you can use the Olympus 14-42mm lens or change to the 45mm (100mm approx equiv)...and/or shoot in 4K and zoom more in post plus many cinematographers/film-makers used fixed lenses most of the time. You can also use your existing smartphone, it doesn't have to be an iPhone.
