Masonry is neither a sect nor a cult. It has no sectarian scripture or anything specific that it demands of its fellows, it has no specific target for worship other than the creator of the universe (however you perceive that). Even the symbols doesn't belong solely to the masons but are more or less just metaphors taken from practical tools. It's a brotherhood dedicated to improving yourself as an individual and as a part of society.
