We sit out a significant low pressure system in our 30 foot sailboat in Shark Bay. We have to manage winds shifting from north east to north west with only a very limited choice of anchorages. Strong tidal flow in the region also complicated matters by dictating the timing of our movements.
A Small Boat Cruising Guide to Shark Bay by Terry Hinchliffe and Leon Deschamps is available here: www.publication...

Nothing sucks as much as being stuck on anchor in a crappy anchorage for days. Been there done that many many times 🤣 Prefer being on land these days watching you. One thing I found worked super well was hanging a drogue off a swung out boom. It just stops most of rolling and also kind of cocks the boat a bit off the wind. Makes life much more bearable when it’s howling at anchor

Id be cool if the wind generator had some sort of drag tension bolt you could tighten when the wind blow to strong. Slow it down to keep the power rolling.
@kristoffscuba5466
@kristoffscuba5466 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is that the blades won’t take the forces involved. Even fully feathered they reach max loading surprisingly quickly. I have wondered if a smaller heavier blade design would work in stronger winds, and suspect it would, but then it would be useless at lower wind speeds. Supposed you could have two blade heads and swap.

"The engine suddenly went up in revs, but we weren't going forward" - whilst tractor driving, I once had the opposite experience. I was using a rotovator to chop straw stubble into the soil of a wheat-field after it had been harvested, and in one or two places there was quite a bit of straw lying about. When the tractor went over thick loose straw, it would lose its grip on the ground; but the rotavator would dig in, and therefore propel everything forward, acting like an outboard motor. The engine note would drop, from the extra load on the rotavator, but the speed would dramatically increase, whilst the big tractor-wheels would be seen to be turning backwards. Very confusing, but at least I didn't have to worry about waves or sinking, so I won't swap places. Fair winds, you two.

Try a rope on the wind generator’s tail and swing it off the wind a bit. Acts a bit like feathering
@BrassLock
@BrassLock 3 жыл бұрын
Farm windmills have adjustable tailfins that can re-align the blades to the side, thus having a similar effect to feathering. I'm surprised yacht wind generators don’t have this useful option.
