Dude, you saved my life. We have mocks for GCSEs soon and due to corona we missed a bunch of lessons, and now we have to rush a lot of topics. I understood more in 4 minutes that 2 hours worth of lessons. #respect

So, if you increase the temperature, equilibrium will shift to the left. This is because the left reaction is endothermic, Energy is taken in which results in the temperature decreasing. However if you decrease the temperature of the reaction, equilibrium will shift to the right, and because the reaction is exothermic to the right, energy is released into the surroundings, so the temperature increases to reach equilibrium Thank you Dr Donnelly, I finish my GCSEs in less than a week so I want to thank you for all your hard work making these videos.

Thank youuuu!!!! So basically if you increase the temp the equilibrium will move to the left to favour the endothermic reaction (does opposite) and if you decrease temp it will move to right to favour exothermic reaction. So what about if the forward reaction was endothermic? And you increased the temp the equalibruim would go to the right still to favour the endothermic reaction? And if you decreased the temp the equalibruim would move to the left to favour the exothermic reaction?

Never found a mistake ever except on this occasion at 1:40 you said although some reversible reactions are exothermic one way and exothermic in the opposite direction. But as I said carnt fault you keep it up. 💯💯

Hi. No I say that some reactions are exothermic in the forward direction and some (ie different reactions) are exothermic in the reverse direction.

Because the reaction shifts to favour the direction which is endothermic (ie takes in energy). This causes the temperature to fall.

Endothermic and exothermic reactions have always confused me. What I don't get is: if in an endothermic reaction heat energy is taken in, shouldn't that make the surroundings colder but the system warmer as it has gained heat? Same with an exothermic reaction: if heat energy is being released wouldn't that make the surrounding warmer as it is being released into the surroundings but the system would get colder as it has lost that heat?

Exothermic reactions do make the surroundings warmer and endothermic reactions do make them cooler. We don't measure the temperature of the system, just the surroundings.

In the case of reversible reactions, the word system refers to the reaction and its surroundings as if they were in a sealed container. Imagine a reaction taking place in a sealed container (the system). If the reaction is exothermic, then the temperature of the system will increase as energy has been released into the system from the reaction. And vice versa with endothermic reactions.

Hi! I'm struggling to understand what 'equilibrium shifts to left/right' actually means. I understand that 'left' refers to reactants and so on, but when you say equilibrium shifts to the left, what does that mean? thanks :)

Hi. I'm sorry for the very late reply. When I say "the equilibrium shifts to the left", what I mean is that when the reaction reaches equilibrium, there will be a greater proportion of reactant in the final equilibrium mixture than before. This only occurs when we change temperature.

Thanks for this video! Helped loads, but one thing im confused on is: if its a change in temperature, will the forward reaction always be exothermic and reverse one endothermic? If no, and its the opposite, do the same principle still apply?

He said that exothermic reaction can be forward or backward reaction. The important thing to know is if temperature is increased, then the equilibrium shifts to the opposite one trying to lower the temp.

1:10 If the energy is released, why does the temperature of the system increase? Surely if you're releasing energy, you're giving out energy- it is decreasing so surely the temperature of the system would decrease as well?

The energy is released from the reacting chemicals to their surroundings (which is water if the chemicals are in aqueous solution). Because the surroundings have gained energy, the temperature of the surroundings increases.

Pick the subject that you like the most and go to the front page of my channel. You'll see there the Biology, Chemistry and Physics sections. Watch the videos in that section. That way, because you know you like that subject, you'll be more likely to watch. Then when you decide that the videos are for you (incase you don't like them), I'd recommend watching a subject that you don't like so much.

endothermic is gonna take in energy so thermal energy which reduces the temp exothermic is gonna release energy to surrondings in the thermal store so the temp increases 😭3 months late to reply hopefully its useful

Hi. Essentially it's the idea of a sealed container, stopping any of the reactants or products from escaping. We call that the system.

It means more of that will be produced e.g. the state of equilibrium will favour sodium carbonate, this means more sodium carbonate will be produced.

im late but since the temperature decreased. The equilibrium HAS to shift to the right to increase the temperature so the system to counteract the change. N2O4 is on the right and since its shifting to the right it will increase more but the NO2 is going to decrease since the equilibrium is moving to the right. Hope this helps.

Hi sir, I am a bit confused on what is meant by equilibrium being the left or right. For example, if equilibrium is on the left what does that actually mean in terms of the reactants and products? Thanks.

If the equilibrium is on the left, then we will have more reactants in our mix than products. If it's on the right, then we have more products than reactants. Hope that helps.

1.40 In you made a mistake xD, you said some are exothermic in forward direction and some are exothermic in backwards direction xD. I know you ment endothermic

Hi, no I meant to say that. What I meant is that some reactions are exothermic forwards and some reactions are exothermic backwards. It just depends on the reaction.
