Since creating this video Luminar Neo has been updated and improved. You can get the newest version on sale here: bit.ly/NeoSale and maybe save more with coupon: ATNEO10 (sometimes Skylum de-activate the code if there's already a promotion running but worth giving a go!)

Yes I like this freestyle approach as it shows the tools off well and helps with ideas on how to rectify things when we get a bit carried away with the editing.

Hi Anthony, yes, ther overlay does bring it a calming effect when one overcooks the image. Surely, after the edit, I´m sure that lots of ideas as to how you could´ve even improved it further, but the excercise was good to show the a common scenario to all photographers. Thank you much for the video.

Great video Anthony! Much appreciate the concept of layering the original photo on top of the edited HDR image. In some of your previous videos you showed the technique of blending the HDR layer with the original, then dropping it out to a tiff to continue editing, which I have adopted in my workflow. But I find it a bit “clunky” when editing multiple images. However, by coupling this technique with your recent tip on creating your technique of creating “my own” preset, I think that combination will greatly impact my processing time. Absolutely marvelous technique sharing. Thank you sincerely. Best wishes & thanks again. Bill

Thank you, this was quite interesting. Even more so that you were critical of the end result. I wondered what specifically you didn’t like about it. It felt like you have a structured yet emergent process, which makes sense. You had no specific end point in mind but started with your initial go to steps and then explored from there in some general directions. This helped demystify the process for me. Step one, be happy about the composition. Two, fix your noise and light. 3 - play.

Hi again Anthony! From my previous posting, I believe the addition of magenta to the sky could be done by using the Cinematic LUT 'San Diego', which gives a nice magenta/purple tone! 😻 Regards from Felix the Cat! 🐱

This is really helpful Anthony! I always enjoy listening to the thought processes of a pro photographer during an editing session. I learn so much that way. I also learned two things that have been vexing me since I started using Neo: how to "dial back" the overall edits and how to show the mask that was previously applied.

Thank you so much Anthony. I ALWAYS learn something from you and this episode was no exception. I agree that the initial editing was somewhat (actually a lot) overdone, however you taught me how to balance that by adding the original photograph as an overlay. That impressed me, and I'm absolutely going to use that feature since I habitually do over edit initially. Again, thank you.

I looked this episode. I do not need to like the final product because I want to learn, not buy an image from you. You did a good job of explaining what you adjusted and why you adjusted it. I also like the advice of ordering light control, then structure, then color, then creative. (Or something about like that.). That layer trick at the end is a great technique, thanks!

Love that video Anthony! Couple of things I learned from my process. First, "playing" with too many options makes me lose perspective. Sometimes, I just leave the edit for a couple of days, come back to it and notice that I have better judgement that way. Another thing is, when I play with the edit too much, I tend to save various edit versions of the file cause I find it hard to decide. 😀 Couple of features I REALLY like to see in Neo 1. Better masking tools and more refined AI masking. ON1 for instance has different masking brash shapes which allow more precise masking. 2. I wish the IA masking could identify animal. It's particularly important to wildlife photographers. Right now the only way to mask animal through AI is using "Architecture". I also wish Luminar Neo had Panorama stitching, especially with RAW files. (Again ON1 has it).

Thank you for these detailed thought process videos! One question: What would you say are the use cases between using the sliders at 2:04 vs using the HDR merge, especially on portraits? I just came back from a concert event with well over 100 photos, but I don't know if I should use the sliders or HDR to get the full tonal range?
@phlotographer
@phlotographer Жыл бұрын
Depends upon the portrait location etc. -- eg. studio or outdoor, natural light or artificial lighting. Subject, CU or FL. I find that HDR does not work very well with human skin tones but of course a mask will help. Often HDR gives one a quick view of what might be the result when doing an edit even if all of the aspects are not fully required.
@AnthonyTurnham

If you're dealing with images in bulk, ie from a concert, then I'd be trying to work with the standard tonal adjustment and synchronising the look across all shots.

@@AnthonyTurnham Thank you! I reasoned that was the most logical approach. Still, it would be nice to throw all of it into HDR merge like a pot one day😆.

I thought it was very interesting to see you questioning your editing while you are doing it. Overall, I took out two important tips: the HDR merging for too dark photos, and the final blending with the original file. BTW, I have a question I'd like to be addressed in the future. You are a pro photograph (I'm not) and you showcase LuminarNeo on your videos. Do you actually use (and how much) LuminarNeo in your professional activity, compared with PS? I'd like to know when you decide to use one or the other, or if you combine them sometimes. FYI, I usually combine DxO lab, Topaz sharpen AI and finish with LuminarNeo in my editing.

Hi Eric, thanks for the comment and cheers for the question. Yes certainly I still use both LR and PS as part of my workflow, I just prefer Luminar, especially for more creative work.

Hi Anthony. I know I'm going back and commenting on a video from a couple of months ago, however, I feel like this may be the best example to address a question I may have. I often find myself exposing for the sky when taking the shot, as you seem to have done in this photo. I sometimes notice that when I try to correct for the under exposed foreground in Neo I get this halo effect bordering the darker areas. I was wondering if you have any insight as to why this occurs and what can be done to avoid or correct it. BTW, I really enjoy the freestyle edit videos. I actually learn quite a bit.

Very helpful and instructional, Anthony ... as aways! I have a question re cropping when using a blended layer with the original layer. If cropping was necessary/desirable ... would one crop the edited image as desired ... and also crop the desired original image exactly so that the blending matches? Or would one need to export the blended images (to make a final edited image) ... and then re-import into the Neo edit panel ... crop as needed ... and then export the cropped image? [I'm assuming the latter] Many thanks!! Andrew
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I'd just leave the cropping until the layers had been overlayed. Cropping then should do the trick.

Bought Luminar NEO using your link! I have a question, perhaps you know... I'm trying to add a sky on an image but the horizon is at an angle. Is there any option to apply an angle to the sky? I can´t seem to be able to, and snipping the image into the right position and then rotating it back again seems like a pretty destructive process... Which is impressive because i can remember clearly Luminar AI did have the option
@matthewisaacs4537
@matthewisaacs4537 Жыл бұрын
Maybe you could open the replacement sky image as a separate edit, rotate it to the angle you want, then save it as a separate file. Then do the sky replacement on your main edit with the rotated sky file? That way you don't have to rotate your main image to get the horizon lined up first, then rotate it back once you've swapped the sky. Anthony might have a better method for this. I haven't played around with sky replacement enough to know if there are other ways of doing what you want.

might be just my bad eyesight but the overlay seemed to make the image not as sharp as the edited image. Maybe just doing a sharpen edit to the original and then do the overlay??? Lots of good info and I like this kind of presentation.
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes you're right. Because the original that was overlayed wasn't sharpened as the underlying layer was it will have reduced the sharpness very slightly. The fix would be, as you point out, to sharpen the overlayed original.

Hi! I downloaded Luminar NEO, but have been experiencing heavy color banding that is only visible on the exported images (not in the platform). I've tried multiple attempts to see what this triggers this, but no matter how little or none of an effect I use it still has it... Do you have any solutions? Thank you!

Have you tried exporting with Adobe RGB vs sRGB and compared the difference? How about 8bit tiff vs 16bit tiff just to see if it gives visibly different results.

I felt that the horizon wasn't horizontal, and was surprised that you did not correct it.
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 6 ай бұрын
I think if you look at the small bit of ocean that's visible you'll see it's horizontal. If the sea is visible I'll usually go with that as my source of truth, but occasionally I'll override it just cos it doesn't 'look' right. This might be one of those times where actually straight is deceptive...
