The guys who set the target time are damn fast and are in constant competition with each other, so they always go full throttle in every official race for the Eurotest (Level 4) or the giant slalom race as part of the Level 3 exam and show no mercy to the candidates. As a non-racer, I only managed to beat the required time for the Level 3 giant slalom by one second. However, I skied through the gates three to four times a week for an entire season before or after ski lessons and on the few days off. I learned how to tune my giant slalom skis (183 cm, R 25 m) and, on the urgent advice of the instructor (a long-time member of the Austrian Interski demo team), I even bought a racing suit just for this one race. All the others who passed the giant slalom race in my exam course were in a ski club as children or teenagers and had race training and competitions there. The target time for the Eurotest (Level 4) is even more difficult to achieve. In Austria, you are only allowed to take the qualification test for level 4 if you have passed the level 3 test with good grades. And despite these strict entry requirements and a passed entrance test, the drop-out rate during the training or the failure rate in the GS test at the end of the very extensive and expensive training is apparently still so high that the Eurotest has now been carried out before the training begins in order to save applicants who have no chance of passing the GS wasting money and time. Six days of race camp is definitely not enough.

Thanks for that. I know what your talking about. You will see me go for the ISIA speed test as I live in Switzerland and thats what the swiss do and seem to be about equally hard to pass. 3 out of 20 something passed on my first attempt. Stay tuned for the next video.

@@StompItTutorials Looking foreward to yout next report and wish you lots of fun and success with the training! In the meantime, I'll practice how to get my hips on the snow with maximum edge angle (I loved your clip with Tom Gellie). I tried his hand drag drill last season, it worked really well and now I'm excited to see if I can manage the next level. By the way, he recently did a podcast with Joe Dunn from SkiDadTV. Joe Dunn has developed a concept for ski racing that he presents in the episodes "Base Skiing Part 1-3". For me, this was one of the most comprehensive and enlightening contributions on the subject of ski racing that I have found on KZbin so far and I wish I had all this knowledge before my GS racing exam. But maybe you already know it anyway.

i loved the GS training we did with our skischool last season. the biggest take away for me was that they said you want to have basically finished the turn before you reach the gate.

Hey Jens, fantastic video as always. I’ve noticed you use atomic a lot and are probably loyal to the brand like me. Especially the X9s and I’ve been using them this entire season all day and they are fantastic skis but tend to be very tiring and as the day goes on a bit less playful. Recently i tried using Volkl race tiger sl and had the time of my life, they are so fun, quick, easier on the legs. I reccomend you try them. The best comparison I can make is the atomic x9 and in general atomic is like being on a high speed train or a f1 car, they are quick and fun but only when the slopes allow you to be and you have the energy for them. Volkl racetiger sl is a modified lambo with drugs in the fuel.

Haha, love it, you can't drop the park lingo 🙂 Droppin 🙂 Used to race when i was a kid and when you get your racing technique pretty good or really good, especially in SL and GS, it makes an excellent base for all type of skiing thereafter 🙂 And for sure if you want to be fully qualified instructor in the EU you really need a racing technique. France for example requires the Eurotest which is a race against French Euro Tour senior racers, and you need to be within a certain amount of them or you fail the test. And for sure a 23-24 meter radius is i think the perfect length for a recreational ski.

Awesole job Jens! It’s an inspiration following your passion for all parts of skiing - truly a way I’m tying to follow as well! What is the radius of your GS skis? Also, what was the radius in the carving video? I’m trying to see if I’m able to replicate your progress on my 26m Radius GS skis 😅
