"The road of hell is paved with good intentions". Old proverb, but very true. Thank you Walter for showing us how welfare lead to socialism - misery for everyone. What matters at the end is the outcome, not the good intentions or empathy. Imagine, this was recorded in 1985, when all communists blocks begun to collapse due own unsustainability, and now it is sad when Western societies foolishly embrace socialism thanks to welfare programs. That collective system aka socialism has proven many times as unsustainable and lead to misery.

I think USA may have to experience it first to understand that's it's not utopia. We tried it in Tanzania, in its extremes where everything was controlled by government. It was called UJAMAA, a Swahili word for communism. Well, eventually the economy collapsed and we learnt our lesson. Now we want as far from it as possible. It seems America will also have to learn through experience.

This is brilliant and clearly explains so many concepts. Walter E Williams, Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman intelligently articulated all of these ideas based on facts and logic decades ago and yet those concepts are perhaps less well understood now than ever before. There's something seriously wrong with our society/politics when the geniuses who follow the evidence and explain what they find in common sense terms are ignored in favour of loud preachers who have no idea what they're talking about. How can anyone even remotely defend the minimum wage laws for a second?

Attributing good intentions to the government is somewhat naive,true, at the low levels, many social workers and ministerial personnel believe in what they are doing,but executives and academics have what their way.
@fdpirigyi11 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The person doing the skimming isn't necessarily good intentioned. However, the law that enables them to steal from the public treasury was put into law with good intentions, or in some worst case scenarios, false reasons when they just want free public money. A federal employee who steals/embezzles public money is committing treason in my opinion.

I work at a discount gerocry store as a cashier. Since I've been there I have been noticing that a lot of people who pay with ebt cards tend to be more aggressive towards there children. Like today a lady snapped at her daughter for not getting some of the bags fast enough and berated her a bit explaining "I pay the bills around here". The daughter was visible hurt by her mother and it's pathetic that these people just have kids just to get a few more money from the government.

Former slaves have been citizens for over 150 years here in the United States of America. When are they going to accept that they are Americans and be accepted as Americans, not "African Americans"? With diverse historical heritage, we Americans are all God’s kids. Most discerning people embrace honest productive functioning American citizens. Attitudes preset response to situations. Attitudes demonstrated by some police, criminals, politicians, commentators, and some protestors (rioters) stink. Lack of respect for hemselves and another American’s wellbeing and property is their violation. There are choices and consequences of those choices. Conflicts seem to follow corruption or misunderstandings. Citizens can put on their American rights and responsibilities as mature adults rather than angry children who need discipline. Race discrimination and atrocities, whatever the historical origin, establish no satisfactory conclusion. The past cannot be changed, but we should gain wisdom from the past and beneficially modify present activities to affect America’s future. Continuation of the same mistakes is depressing progress. Violent revenge establishes a cycle of destruction and retribution that is tragic. Revenge is a sharp knife with no handle that cuts whatever it touches. Riot agitators function in 2020 seems to be detrimental domination of this nation’s sustaining form of government. Survival of America is dependent upon the bulk of citizen’s acceptance of each other and support of the intended humane founding principles of this nation. Order is the fabric strength of society. Honest thinking people of all skin colors are Americans and general mutual respect is paramount. Red, Yellow, Black, White and Mixed race poverty will be reduced and wellbeing enhanced by individuals who embrace respect, responsibility, and earn their keep. Such as, one man and one women respecting and loving together, nurturing their children to value honest productive work, education, and freedom from non-effective dominating government intervention. Productive work and honesty will enable an individual’s freedom from the lies false leadership uses to manipulate citizens into poverty while glorifying themselves. The political left promotes the expansion of divisiveness to gain personal elite domination, while regressing government to the feudal structure the United States founding fundamentals overcame.

If you take inflation into account, isn't $1 in 1954 worth more than $3.35 in 1984? Therefor the minimum wage merely followed the inflation rate and shouldn't affect the employment rate unless for other external factors?
@warddan20024 жыл бұрын
Daniel Sisay you're missing the point Williams and others make about free markets. If minimum wage laws inhibit the workings of free markets, both employee and employer suffers. If an employer would offer a job at a price an employee would be willing to work, and that price is lower than the arbitrary minimum wage, and minimum wage laws prevent the employer from paying that wage, then both parties lose.

Why is it such a travesty if children are born out of wedlock?
@guitarsANDcars394 жыл бұрын
Most kids born out of wedlock are not planned out. Hence, bad parenting decisions ends with single mothers relying on government money. Government money is tax money. Who pays the taxes? The US citizens. Country as a whole gets less money.
