In this video, Sinead, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot London, takes you on a tour of the public areas of Kensington Palace and the Sunken Gardens. NEXT VIDEO: Kensington Gardens • Kensington Gardens Lon... .
Set in the beautiful parkland of Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace, which dates from the 17th century, is most well known for being home to members of the royal family like William and Mary, Princess Diana, Prince Harry, and now Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Join Sinead as she climbs the King's Staircase to admire the Georgian paintings inspired by the palaces of Rome before heading into the King's Apartments followed by the Queen's Apartments, where you will get a taste of the Pricess Victoria exhibit.
The tour ends at the Sunken Gardens where we will visit the new Princess Diana Memorial statue.

Would like to add That Queen Victoria had a terrible childhood here, her Mother made her wear Holly round her neck so as to keep her head up at all times. Her Nanny was more like a Mother, but when Victoria got Married her Nanny could not let go. She did not get on with ALBERT, so with a sad heart, Victoria told her that she was sending her on a holiday back to Germany for a short break. Victoria was heart brocken. She also moved her Mother to other quarters. The first thing that Victoria did when she announced Queen, was to move to Buckingham Palace, Victoria was the first Monarch to live in Buckinham Palace. (Just a little bit of trivia) Did you know that the MABLE ARCH was once the entrance to Buckingham Palace, It was removed because it was not wide enough for the Royal Coach to go through. (Enough for now)

So sad to think her childhood was so controlled Wonderful information here , delighted she had years of albeit short happiness with Albert Ironically the controlling nature of her mother back fired in years to come Always find Victorias story remarkable Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Sinéad

As as child living in West Kensington in the 50s, my friends and I often used to visit Kensington Palace and at that time there was the part that was known as the Kensington Palace Museum in the Palace. It was a wonderful place for us youngsters and I remember it had the most extensive exhibits of the royal doll houses, many of them, which were fascinating to post-war kids like me who had very little. They also had costume displays under glass of course and at one time I remember they exhibited Princess Margaret's Wedding Dress. They also had interactive displays and I particularly remember one of the Great Fire of London where you pressed a button and it lit up with imaginary flames. On a Sunday morning the round pond would have lucky kids and enthusiasts sailing their boats and large scale models of steamships which would often stop working and their owners would have to paddle out to retrieve them. We could only afford a jam jar and little fishing net and would catch tiddlers. There was also the "fairy tree" which was a knarled old tree which had faries and elves and creatures carved into it and it was always exciting when the faded figures got a new coat of paint and were given a new lease of life. If you search on The Elfin Oak, Kensington Gardens you can see it is still there. It is now behind a protective cage but in my day you could touch it. We also loved to run through the leafy arches around the sunken garden (which didn't look as manicured is it does today and had a mysterious air about it, looking a bit abandoned). And then, of course, we would go to all the Museums in Exhibition Road and would marvel at things like the magic door that would open as you approached it which was such a novelty then but is now taken for granted on many stores and entrances. I could ramble on and on but it was a magical world for us youngsters and all free, just costing a few pennies on the bus to be transported to such delights. Yes London was a great place to grow up in and I miss it, having settled for a quiet life on the South Coast for my twilight years.

Great tour, one of the few I haven’t watched on mute. ;) Personally, I don’t care for the post of the Diana statue. I think it fails to have movement that she exhibited even at rest. And the grip on the children is just creepy, with one unfortunate soul lagging behind. I loved the rooms you video picked and your narrative. Thanks for posting.

King Willian III and Queen Mary II were members of the Stuart Dynasty which ended with the death of Mary’s sister Queen Anne who succeeded them to the throne. Although she gave birth to 17 children, none survived to succeed her. The Georgian Dynasty began on 1st August 1714 when King George I was crowned. He was a distant cousin - his grandmother being Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James VI of Scotland/King James I of Great Britain, who founded the Stuart Dynasty. Princess Elizabeth was given in marriage to Frederick V, Elector Palatinate of the Rhine, so George I was German and extremely unpopular when he became King of Great Britain. He founded the Hanoverian Dynasty. It was during the reigns of him and his successors ( George’s II,III & IV) that Georgian architecture was created.

If I read one more comment from my fellow Americans belaboring the notion of maybe, might, possibly never getting to visit the UK. We are the empire now boy'o and imperial citizens don't do maybe, might, if only. Our rich earn their wealth inventing slogans like 'Just Do it.' There will will never be a perfect or convenient time, yet your grandfather managed it, and he had to fight Germans before coming home. All you have to do is search priceline. Handle it.

I don't know if you know this, but Diana was never actually "Princess Diana", only women of royal blood have Princess before their name. Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles was titled, Diana, The Princess of Wales, and then later Diana, Princess of Wales after they divorced. In her own right, she was Lady Diana. On a separate note though, a fantastic video. Thanks for sharing.

I find it tragic that the beautiful gilded fencing was removed in favor of the short metal fencing. It looks terrible imo, to have left the gate and rip out the rest of it. I know they wanted to make it seem "more approachable", so why did they errect that cheap looking short fencing? It would look more approachable without any fencing at all. Shameful!

All about members of the royal family, in whom I have NO interest whatsoever. I would still like to see a video about Kensington Palace!
