I understand full well your statement regarding sleigh beds being "notoriously hard to sell". I recently purchased a pair of beautiful early 19th-century inlaid Dutch marquetry sleigh beds at an auction in St Michaels, Maryland. Items like chairs, armoires, and even table mirrors, in the aforementioned style, were closing at well north of $200. Meanwhile, I managed to acquire both beds for a mere twenty bucks. I genuinely enjoy these videos and look forward to learning more about the wonderful pieces you'll find next.

Thanks for watching - and yes they aren’t very practical outside of chateau redecoration or for an eccentric child - this one will likely go to someone interested in Jacob furniture more so than someone needing a bed!

I love this. I've studied furniture for nearly forty years, and Empire has always been my favorite style ( probably because it plays to my "queen of everything" fantasies). Peter Philip once said that the style had a "funereal splendor, perfectly suited to morticians with delusions of grandeur." I disagree. The style is manly and can be intimidating, but it takes a larger-than-life personality to carry it off.

It’s bold and grand, strong and encouraging- perhaps not always what one wants in an interior, but I don’t think there is anything fundamentally wrong with it ! Great funeral quote … it is austere after all but aesthetic movements are like moods… different ones for different contexts and anyway there are plenty of times in life when one needs to be grand and bold.

Great presentation. Great bed, really great bed! Seeing allot of great furniture on the market. Pricing is very tentatively better as is demand. Seems that now everyone was sold MCM and minimalism and every house looks the same, some people are dabbling in classical furniture to differentiate themselves. My best.

Yes that seems to be the case - and any disregard for pieces like this was a reactionary accident due mainly to ignorance. The pendulum seems to be swinging back to some semblance of market efficiency and reality.

It's the stamp of Georges Jacob but at that time the G had been taken away since he was dead. Before it was G+JACOB

That makes sense - I was doing good just to get the dates right. Referenced the book a little too quickly but hopefully the correction was clear enough!

Very beautiful piece! I imagine a boat bed like this would be a hard sell to the casual collector, though, since it's probably difficult to watch television in one!

Are the screws wooden or metal, considering that this is pre-industrial?
@MyersMonroe
@MyersMonroe Жыл бұрын
Sorry the image quality wasn’t clear during the screw part - they are some old type of iron/steel. These screws seem to appear in the late 18th century and they are standard issue for boat beds throughout the 19th. Pretty serious little pieces of metalwork.

“Do as I say not as I do !” Most good decorators still buy antiques anyways.

Haha thank you - yes you’re right about that - professionals are still very much aware of good antiques. Half of my sales are to interior decorators / designers.
