The anger hasn’t subsided: Branching out from France and Germany, farmers’ protests and tractor blockades have been spreading across Europe. Set to fight for the future of farming, for the environment and for society, the movement has reached a new stage, and it has obtained important concessions from the ranks of European and national leaders. But now you hear people wondering whether the protests have achieved anything at all. Is what’s been announced in Brussels and Paris heralding progress, or is it a setback? Join me as I try to find out more on the ground in this second report on the farmers’ protests - at the “siege of Paris” and at a giant mobilisation in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.
To illustrate how the European Union and the French government are trying to tread the delicate path between demands for a more productive agriculture and those for a green transition of the entire sector, I’ve identified three key measures that were announced in reaction to the protests. You’ll find them fleshed out in this video:
