I'm a Canadian and served 5 years (1985-1990) in the French Foreign Legion. There were 37 of us started the instruction (Basic Training). Only 23 became légionnaire. I did my basic from Septembre - December. The farm was fucking brutal, we were house in a horse stable converted to a barracks. Your always tired, hungry and cold. Anyway, I completed and finished 14th in my class. I wanted to go to the 2eREP (Para). But the first 10th best went to the unit. The Lieutenant asked me, if im interested to go overseas in French Guyane (3eREI), I said yes, thinking that il make more money overseas. I did 3x Commando course in Guyane, 2x Mission Fluvial, 1x mission Profond, I became an instructor in Jungle Warfare School (CEFE3)....NO REGRETS, have a good time!!!! Very interesting. I joined in '83 from Orange County California after being 2 years out of the u.s. Air Force as the military policeman. I always joke that I was going to write a book, "Three Weeks a Legionnaire". Flew straight to Marseille and waited for 3 hours at the airport police station until the recruiting Sergeant came and pick me up. I'm really not sure where I first I spent about 3 days with about 5 other recruits at some reception station and then it was about a 10 minute drive to Aubagne, the actual post, itself for the assessment and selection process. It was a little more Spartan back then than what I see on KZbin these days, but all the guys seem pretty friendly to each other and helpful even if they didn't speak your language. I thought everything was going along just fine and was quite happy to be there until one morning they called my name and then next thing I knew I was getting the payout for my weeks of service and being shown the door with a little slip of paper that said I had been discharged wasn't a deserter in case the cops stopped me. Well I raised a bit of a stink and I finally got somebody to come over and explain to me that I was being discharged because I had "flat feet". That was obviously an excuse more than a reason. I never had flat feet. I kept telling them I wanted to be reevaluated and this one burley Sergeant kept saying "No. You must go". He just kept repeating that over and over again to everything I said. So finally I left. Right outside the gate there was some little Pub or a bunch of legionnaires hung out, so I had a few drinks with those guys. I guess I was the butt of some of their jokes, but they were amiable guys anyway. One telling me I was lucky to have "escaped". Of course he was mostly joking but it made them laugh when I told them dejectedly that I didn't want to escape. So I spent the night in a little nearby in and was on a flight at the airport the next day heading back to Southern California. A 3 week veteran of the Foreign Legion. LOL. The minor consolation I gave myself is that at least I did whst so many other guys only talk about. I went and I tried.

Im 23 now and i can't join my home army because some criminal problems when I was young. I have no family left (all dead), no real friends. I really want to serve and do something with my life tho. And I think I try my luck at the ffl next year. Is there something I should train in this year? Like rope climbing, more running etc. And what unit should I aim for when I want to see combat? 2rep, 2rei, 3rei or 13Dble? Good video! Best of luck to you.
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are the ideal candidate for sure. In terms of running and stuff you should be fine. Swimming and pullups and pushups is all good to train. If you are able to practice rope climbs it will be an asset, improving technique is good, even if the strength is there. As for regiments, there is no guarantee you will see any combat at all. I talked to an American who has been 2REP 3 years and hasn't seen shit. Luck of the draw really, your regiment might "deploy" but your company might not.

The farm is not hard if you have been in a decent military before .I was there 81,it depends what type of life you had before enlisting.I thought that the kepi blanc march would be difficult as so much emphasis was put on it,basically to me it felt like a country walk with a back pack on which was not even heavy ie sleeping bag helmet etc.I started to get dissollusioned with the legion during the red march at end of instruction ,basically a walk through the French countryside very picturesque though.I then realised that this was not some crack unit,half the people in instruction still couldn't do safety drills properly with weapons,some still wanted to drop out on the marches,we weren't even carrying much weight,compared to when I was in British infantry,and I would say at least 3frenchman in my section now would be classed as special needs,couldn't even remember the words for the singing,besides other peculiarities they had .Little Viking also mentions sous officers selling chocolate double price,same in my regiment UK on exercise company quartermaster used to sell chocolate inflated price,put it on a tab and when back in barracks couldn't leave until you paid up..I came fourth over all after instruction guy who came first was Portuguese,Second can't remember third was my mate I joined up with he was called Morton he went to deuxieme rep and then me fourth,I was told I was staying as aide monitoring fut fut caporal,I spoke fren quite well at this time ,in fact it it was put to me I had no choice.After a while I kept asking to go to a regiment to no avail,thought I'd go missing a few days,get put in poste de police then sent off to a regiment,the further I left the barracks I just didn't feel like going back,sort of regret it but I ended up in Brussels for a while

Thanks in advance mate ( the reason I ask these questions is I am not allowed to join the military in any capacity because of hereditary heart disease, and I fi nd myself replicating military life as it's my dream. I know the FNMAS can eject to the left, did anyone get a hard time because they were a left handed shooter? How many years do you have to serve to get a retirement from the Legion? In the U.S. you have to do 20 yrs and you get half your base pay, based on your ending rank. Does the Legion have specialty pays, like for jumping or diving?
@nickomplejo7 жыл бұрын
You will have to manage with the same FAMAS that will be given to everybody: right hand. And no, no special pay for being in the REP or REI, same pay for everyone.
@josephcosgroveF4fl7 жыл бұрын
Tidefan Yankee, I was hoping that the Viking was going to answer this. Yes the FAMAS can be shot by left handed shooters. There is a small manipulation to make to the working parts. It is now 17.5 years to get a pension in the French army i.e. Legion included. Yes you get extra money while serving as a para in the REP or REG's DINOPS You also get diving pay if you are a military qualified diver.
@tidefanyankee24287 жыл бұрын
Joseph Cosgrove. Thank you, so essentially jero'nimo rodriguez was completely wrong. Yeah, that didn't sound correct to me that soldiers wouldn't get some extra pay for jumping and diving.
@josephcosgroveF4fl7 жыл бұрын
For the Paras it's a third extra of your basic pay. For the dives it depends on the depth and duration. It may be worth pointing out the there is a section in the REP and REG (DINOPS) who dive with pure oxygen. Also I'd like to point out that when you go over seas you get paid more ++. I wouldn't take what J. Rodriquez has to say for gospel. If, contrary to the Viking he hasn't done his 5 months then, forget it.
@tidefanyankee24287 жыл бұрын
Pure 02 dives means re-breathers, and you can't go very deep for very long with those. What exactly is the DINOPS? A third extra for jump pay is a pretty good amount. They must pay them per dive if it's determined based on depth and duration. Glad to see they get overseas pay as well.

Did you witness any physical violence from the corporals towards the recruits ? Just curious to see if the rumour have any substance to them, thankyou for your videos.
@moriarty31605 жыл бұрын
Yes it is common especially during the Farm training. And it can go far further than a few bad punches or kicks. A few years ago, a recruit lost his genitals in the Farm after a caporal put the canon of his famas directly on his balls and fire several times with blank ammo, the recruit got severely burned and lost his testicules. It was a punition, the caporal got pissed off because the recruit didn t respect sécurity rules during a shooting exercice. There was a lawsuit against the FFL but the recruit lost. After this case and others of the same kind, a french female deputy or minister (I am not sure) even try to forbid corporal punishments in FFL but the french army minister didn t gave shit about it. Everything was in the newspapers at this time, you can probably find it on internet if you are able to read french. FFL is no joke, they have their own way to do things, discipline is way much harder than in any other french fighting regiments. Basically once in the Légion, you are the propriety of the Légion. So if shit happens and if you are not native french (only 15 to 20% of légionnaires are french natives), you will be nothing but a foreigner looser under a fake identity in a foreign country who put himself in trouble willing to serve in a foreign army corp wordwidly famous for its extreme discipline ... Don t expect any help you will have no rights. Anyone who go there need to listen carefully and obey orders (which is not always simple at the beginning because orders are given in french by instructors who speak bad french to people who mostly don t speak french). Some FFL instructors, especially the ones coming from eastern europ can switch easily in psycho mode if they believe you are too weak, too stupid or not reliable, corporal punisments are used to teach, test and sometimes to push you out. It is the instructors job, the Farm time is a selection time. They want only true badass to join the Légion.

What they ask on the aptitute test.. are they hard like mos guys say .and is there any body fat % or weight requirements??
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
The psychotechnical (aptitude) tests are just basic problem solving questions. Words, numbers, spatial reasoning etc. you can find practice quizzes online and they are essentially that just with many more questions and progressive difficulties. BMI - Body Mass Index.. they use this, you can find charts online to calculate for yourself. They recommend between 20-30, but i've seen all shapes and sizes there.

hi Littlest Viking, I am in pretty good shape just not good at pullups. I remember looking at the the official Legion site like 6 months ago and it said minimum 4 pullups but now it says minimum 3 pushups. what does this mean? does it mean pullups are not expected for entry anymore? thanks in advance.
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
3 pushups? Or did you mean pullups? Either way, being good at both wont hurt. I recommend being able to do at least 7-10 pullups strict, pushups you should be able to do at least 50 no rest. My strength is pretty good, for example my deadlift is over 400lbs.. where i really struggled though in the legion was running, i did it and finished, but i definitely wasnt leading the way there.
@willyishere7 жыл бұрын
Littlest.Viking ya it said pushups i also thought it was a typo but then i read more and it said from "arms outstretched in a prone position to going deep down"(or simething like that) so it wasnt a typo but anyway thx 4 the advice great vids btw

Hey man First I just want to say thank you very much for your service to the country and freedom( I'm also from canada) A few questions. 1) while in training( and after passing training) Is there any access to internet? I only ask as I want to keep in touch with a few people here after I leave and my best bet will be facebook and 2) I did a police college course ( 2 years) will that be of any help with getting into the legion? and last. Let say at some point during training I get send home for a injury or something . If I am only supposed to bring $300 with me how exactly do I get back home? Also should I get any vaccinations before I go ( I know I may need a vaccination if deployed to South America)
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
You will be able to use a computer on "Quartier Libre".. you will get 2-4 of them while training. As well you will be able to purchase a cellphone on your 2nd one. It is definitely worth mentioning your courses but it is still not a guarantee. And lastly, if you are injured they will keep you around unless its really bad. You will be getting paid and if you are to go home you will have the money you've earned given to you. Appreciate it man, thanks.

Why would you fight for france? So many americans are romanticized by the legion, it is a brutal hard life with physical abuse, that most americans living a comfortable life can't adapt to, cause we have it too good. Now if you are from a third world country living in a slum , shitting in a ditch, no indoor plumbing, working 10 hrs day for peanuts, you probably could adapt very well

I'm Canadian, my probation ends in 9 months. From what you're saying (or at least how you're saying it) I get the feeling you think the Canadian military is better. If I could get in the Canadian military after probation would you recommend the Canadian army over the french? I want a physically challenging environment and from what I've heard the french foreign legion sounds much harder. Though this may not be true.
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
In recent years i would say yes, the Canadian military has become softer in terms of some of the physical points entirely due to the first world way of things nowadays. The Canadian Military is definitely a better fighting force though. If you were to get into a recce platoon or even go on SF selection and get in with CSOR or even JTF2 or CJIRU you will have a much more satisfying career. Initially though, yes, the legion has a higher physical demand during its training. However, my reasons for leaving are not because of difficulty as my number 1 fan joseph cosgrove would have you believe. I simply realized the legion has its reputation, and thats truly all it has. I personally do not wish to dissuade your decision to go and will let you decide for yourself.

Hey man just wanted to say your videos have been awesome and alot of help. I am Canadian recently retired from pro baseball I've been turned away from Canadian forces 3 times last 2 years I've been doing a lot of searching and watching videos on FFL I am hoping to go to Paris after Xmas or after my bday which is in Jan. I've had the opportunity to join the Marines about 4 years ago but choose not too. Ive decided to choose FFL after finding out my family history is related to Napoleon looking for a change a new challenge and adventure so you have covered a lot of info which is awesome but curious on a few things 1 is it as bad as they say it is ? Like I've heard they mistreated a lot of people? 2 Are you allowed to contact family after while ? 3 are the tests similar to what CF testing is?
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
Hey man, im sorry to hear you couldnt get into the CF, it is by far a much better organization. But if you truly do wish to join the legion then go for it, worst case scenario you come back home. To answer your questions, 1 it is bad just in terms of the people and the things they can gey away with, i enjoyed the roughness and ive always loved the military life, but the legion is full of idiots. Yes, you will be able to contact family while back in castel at some point, you will be allowed to purchase a plain cell at some point too. Which tests do you mean? The aptitude tests are similar, but the fitness one is a little different and the interviews are more in-depth in the legion. This is probably because the legion only knows what you tell them, Canada has access to all your files already.
@jayjohnson61057 жыл бұрын
Ya I've always wanted the military life like you I enjoy the roughness I am a grinder so I only have one gear and it's all forward lol. I kinda figured there are bunch of idiots in the FFL just by watching docs lol . At what point in training or into the 5 years do they ship you off to Afgan ? I heard but wasn't 100 % on it that they ship you out to get combat experience right away that true ?
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
The amount of bs and complete morons there was ultimately why i chose to leave and move on from the military life and create a new life for myself, one that i control. Being in the legion absolutely does not guarantee combat, I talked to an American who has been 2REP for 3 years and seen nothing. Another South African 2REP guy, same thing. Tons of guys have been nowhere. And 2REP is supposed to be the nonstop action reg't. All the guys I was friends with who were 2REP have moved to other regiments.
@jayjohnson61057 жыл бұрын
I can see it being hard to trust someone like that to watch your 6 without having to look behind you every second to see if they really do or not. I can see why you left can't fix stupid right deff don't wanna get shit from friendly fire cause they are idiots lol
@Littlest.Viking7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, didnt see your reply till now. Yeah man, it got to the point where i was like, "i can do so much more with my life than this place." Now dont get me wrong, some guys need it, but most are extremely unhappy there and when you leave, especially after just 5 years, you have nothing translatable into the world. I figured it was best i make something of myself now instead of later when everyone else has something going for them. I had a huge drinking problem before when i was in tje CF, its the military culture, and i know i would jave ended up like that again.
