Mexico was already embroiled in a civil war at the time and had not seen any stability since its independence almost. The goal of the French was to built a strong Catholic state to rival and stop the influence of the protestant USA over the American continent. It seems like a joke, but many Americans think that Mexico's national celebrations (Independence Day) are due to this (May 5 or Cinco de Mayo), when in reality it is on September 15-16 😅. A curious fact is that the “Cinco de Mayo” is celebrated more in the State of Puebla-Mexico and a large part of the USA for some reason, but all of Mexico considers it a historical day, but not something that is at the level of the independence of Mexico.
@mysterybox92502 ай бұрын
I dont think any american thinks that because most americans dont even know that France even invaded mexico. And most dont even know about date of their independence from spain. But if you put them on the spot to guess a date. Thwy will say cinco de mayo not because they are sure of the answer or think its true but because its the only date they know how to say in spanish.

@screwthenet9 күн бұрын
It is indeed truly said that, according to hearsay and "legend", supposedly a buncha texans in the south of the state say the people of Puebla celebratin their defeat of French soldiers that came to take over their town and area. With little more than sticks and stones to break their bones, the people of Puebal somehow turned away all the French and then later had a huge shindig, and again supposedly, the Texans all thought it was MExican Independence day. But as a result, news spread fast through america over the next hundred plus years (I dont call that spreading fast like wildfire tbh, but...America is slow on the uptake as always), and ever since, the 5th of May is celebrated as cinco de Mayo. When I used ot go to Mexico, many had no idea what it was.

México had a huge debt with the UK, Spain and France, so they formed a coallition and occupied the port of Veracruz, which was the most important mexican port and also the current location of president Juárez (because funny enough, México was going through a civil war between liberals and conservatives), to force the mexican government to pay. Anyway, after a while the UK and Spain decided México was not a priority (and because they realized México had no money indeed), but France was ruled by non other than Napoleon III, which wanted to expand the French Empire, so, taking advantage of the situation and with some internal support from the conservatives (which wanted to be ruled by an european monarch), the french invaded. After a year or so an austrohungarian named Maximiliano I was sent to México to rule as emperor for three years before they killed him (Noooo!

Mexico would've been colonized again if not for USA

Thanks to Porfirio Diaz and Ignacio Zaragoza, America didn’t do anything.

haha nope, learn some history, the only help from the US was quipment and loans, only mexicans fought against the french. When the war happened the US was going through the civil war so they didn't send people to help Mexico, and that cooperation was also cus they didn't want Napoloen to think in going to the US after Mexico.
@ElAsombrosoPachus2 ай бұрын
@@javiergonzs3744he is right. USA allowed the vile Benito Juarez to escape from Felix de Zuluaga, which meant to delay the end of the war, and lately the winning of his traitor side.
