@@randomobserver8168 German military music has never been associated with a high moral viewpoint. Nor progress, not until post 1955. Glad to see you didn't mention Britain, which has no music that is not tied to the empire, the evil, corrupt monarchy, BUT NEVER THE PEOPLE.

many ignorant comments below maybe from Americans The music is broadcast on loudspeakers because the route is two miles long the clip showed the graduating classes of the grand ecoles so they have spent three years education not square bashing, hence no medals they do practice but emphasize not cutting off their ears with the swords The Bastille day parage honours detachments for achievement e.g. achievement overseas, UN service, Fire service, anti terrorism, police. The Legion group will have rows of service medals especially among teh long service NCOs - in Britain the officers hog the awards

I like that the French still march in step and hold formation and ranks within acceptable norms. I watched Canadian and American [probably Ceremonial Guard, RCMP, and what turned out to be West Point cadets wearing the historical and oddly named [and newly restored] "pinks and greens" uniform] at Remembrance Day a couple of years ago. I will charitably assume that for marching off after the ceremony they had been told to go casual. This might actually have been 2023. I mean, West Point cadets! Granted they weren't on the academy grounds or in the grays. Still.

Bot: 👁️👅👁️ frAnCe = 🏳️ French: The French, traumatized by World War 1, didn't want to go to war anymore. The peaceful government launched a demilitarization of the country. In 1940, the Germans succeeded in encircling 100,000 soldiers, breaking the French army. After this successful blitzkrieg and the capture of the French fortifications, there's nothing left to fight for. The army had 3 times fewer planes, 10 times fewer soldiers and 100 times fewer tanks even before the Germans arrived in Paris. The indefensible city. It's no longer a question of fighting panzers with wooden sticks, but of saving as many lives as possible and managing the exodus of over 10 million French people fleeing southwards. It can validly be argued that France was in a poor shape to confront Germany in 1940, because of failing politics, economic inadequacy and deficient military doctrine. But in view of the loss of life it had to suffer both in absolute numbers (200 000 over the whole of WWII) and relative to the country’s population (0,5%), the French army although utterly defeated cannot be taxed with cowardice.

Kiwi here. When the British were fleeing to Dunkirk and awaiting evacuation (in an operation initially kept secret from the French), the French under General Molinié fought essentially a rearguard action for four days in the Siege of Lille. Although heavily outnumbered and suffering severe casualties, they successfully held back seven German divisions from the assault on Dunkirk and thereby saved an estimated 100,000 British and Allied troops, my uncle among them. That is just one example of French sacrifice, for an ally that deserted them. You might like to think about that next time you’re at the pub, sneering at the French and bragging about the 1966 World Cup and how you ‘won the war’, despite having nothing to do with either. Oh, and for the record, you Poms didn’t win the war. You survived it. The Soviets won it and the Americans kept you afloat. One thing you did succeed at was losing the peace. How’s Brexit working for you?

of its 1,079 engagements, France scored 584 victories and 495 defeats, i.e. 54.5°/0 against 45.5. Prussia and England were more successful: 60°/o of successes against 40 of failures, but on a much smaller number of engagements (297 for Prussia, 337 for England).

I recall the immortal words of a fellow citizen of Saint Malo, Monsieur Surcouf, during his capture of an English vessel, when the English captain reproached him for his profession as a royal privateer: ‘Monsieur Surcouf, you only fight for money, whereas we fight for honour!’ To which Surcouf replied: ‘It's quite normal, my Lord: we fight for what we lack most!
