It’s good to see you again, I hope you’re enjoying your time in Hawaii. That MRE brought back some memories for me. Our family used to visit France every year for a few weeks in the summer. This was in the 70s and 80s when our supermarkets didn’t have the same amount of imported food that we have today. I still remember how good the food tasted, French jam was so much nicer than British and the cheese selection was huge compared to home! I also remember that you were allowed to hunt wild boar in some parts of the country so they’re probably still doing that today. I thoroughly enjoyed your story and your wife is beautiful. God bless you from Scotland,UK

Paella is a Spanish dish. It was called the catch of the day dish because the locals would put whatever they caught with rice and whatever else. It was considered a poor dish, but it's not anymore. I make paella and my family loves it. My great aunt who lived in Sevilla, Spain who I used to visit when I was stationed in Germany use to make this when I would visit because she knew I loved it.
@MeAncient
@MeAncient 5 ай бұрын
That's funny about how it used to be considered a poor man's dish. I met a guy who grew up on the Outer Banks area of North Carolina, USA. When he was a kid they would go to the local fish market where the fishermen sold their catch. He said the fishermen would sell the kids tuna belly for 10 cents a pound. They used it for shark bait 'cause no one wanted tuna belly. Now the same cut of tuna cost minimum of $30 per pound.......TFW

Great to see another video posting. It's been a while. I think you spoiled us by posting one a week, for the first month or so, around the first of the year! What a feast. That French MRE, looks like it would be extremely filling, with lots of calories, for a 24 hour period. It kinda makes the MRE's for our troops, pale in comparison. That main dish looks like a Spanish dish that I've heard of, but, can't remember the exact name. Filled with rice, and all different kinds of meats and veggies. Even the picture on the container, reminded me of it, before you opened it up. Thanks for a great video, tell Ace hi from me, looking forward to more. God bless.

My uncle was in the Marines. And my Dad and Grandpa was in the army. All three are no longer with us. One of the things I miss most is the stories they would tell. My dad and grandpa would talk alot about the food. They both had C and K rations and they both said some were good and some were bad tasting. The food they both loved the most was the Chipped Beef on Toast or aka SOS. now my Uncle was in the Marines around the same time you was. He had been stationed in Japan, The Philippines, was also in Panama and in Granada. He was in charge of the armory. And he always talked about the transition from C and K rations to the Mre. He said the mre was horrible and he loved the C and K rations better. He always would rather eat his sisters cooking before a mre. But they all told the greatest stories that's what I really miss the most. Great video as always

Paella is a traditional Spanish dish, but it has many variations and names in the Iberian peninsula, and in neighboring countries, such as France, it is quite common to find the dish and its variations (but the "real" paella is Spanish). Traditional paella is made in a "big" frying pan, the base is saffron rice, which is joined by cold meats, such as chorizo and bacon, seafood, pork and chicken. The Portuguese and Spaniards eat a lot of seafood and fish, and pork and chicken are often complemented with seafood in various dishes. There is, for example, "carne de porco a alentejana" (literally pig meat Alentejo style) in the south of Portugal, with pork, clams, potatoes, white rice, and saffron or rice. You will find a "million" dishes of rice and seafood or with meats all over the peninsula, but rice is more popular in Portugal (we even brought it to Italy). The dish you mentioned, "jambalaya", is heavily influenced by Portuguese and Spanish cuisine, like most "cajun" food, which also has French influences. Also do not forget there are a lot of Portuguese and Spanish emigrants and descendants of emigrants in France, so over the years we have influenced ourselves mutually. The pate of wild boar meats is very popular, and eating boar is not very uncommon in Portugal for example, especially in more rural areas, like my hometown in south Portugal where every hunting season, someone got a boar (got one myself when I was a "kid", but I am not much of a hunting fan), there are even restaurants that specialize in boar dishes... Excellent video as always hope the trip is going alright.

Cajun food is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese ? Their primary influence is French (roux, cochon de lait, boudin, noircissement, écrevisses, etc) Spanish influences in their cooking is as important as Amerindian and African influences meaning some influence but few comparing to the French influence And boar pâté as shown in the MRE ration is made with brandy and a binding with eggs and seasoning with aromatics. Same recipe in Portugal ?
@joaomarreiros4906
@joaomarreiros4906 Жыл бұрын
@@bennett1199 Who do you think influenced the French? Besides that, I was not questioning it was the Acadian immigrants that created cajun, that is a given, in my opinion, I was talking about influences. And at least in Portugal, in South Portugal where I am from, you will find the same kind of boar dishes (like I said in my comment), in fact, I had hunters in my family (even hunted when I was young but got bored with it and stopped) and had boar cooked in all possible ways, including a delicious pate made with the liver, heart and innards of the beast we mix with blood, seasoned, and made into a kind of "sausage" (the Portuguese and Spanish always prepared meats almost always in sausage or presunto, jamon form due to the climate, to have meats that would survive a harsh Summer and a harsh Winter without spoiling, and we started using spices due to moorish influence and because it preserved food better). My friends in my hometown often treat me to a boar dinner. As for eating seafood we have done it since pre Roman times, and always had, we are a seafaring culture, the potatoes it was the Spanish that brought them, the tomato so common in south Europe I think no one knows who had the idea, and the rice, yes, the Portuguese again, and from there everywhere (including Italy), and mixed with every good idea we got along the way. Heck, one of our princesses, a queen of the English, even brought the habit of tea drinking, little cookies, and a daily bath, to the King of England - some of us enjoy tea, but we prefer coffee, I like both to be honest. Influences my friend, I was not questioning the Acadian origin, Portuguese cuisine as influenced other cultures cuisine and got influenced by them, spreading it across the world, see where the Japanese "tempura" comes from...

@@joaomarreiros4906 that is exactly what i'm questionning : Portuguese cooking has had zero influence on French cooking : French cooking has been the result of the French chefs since the Roman Empire and French humble people who were astute enough to make the best with their local products. The way you describe "boar pâté" is proof enough of that. Check " terrine de sanglier" and see the difference. And the Portuguese people who came in France were influenced by French cooking and not the other way around. In matter of cooking, we owe you zilch.

"Boar" usually means it comes from male pigs that aren't castrated (either wild pig or domestic pigs used for breeding). The testosterone and other hormonal stuff causes the meat to taste different ("boar taint"), which can affect marketability, so most farm-raised male pigs are castrated.
