This is a beautiful and wonderful song. The lyrics to this song reminds me of the lyrics to a pome written by the American fictional author Bret Harte. It was staged in Newport, Rhode Island in the early 1900s when he saw an apparition of a beautiful young lady waltzing around the ballroom. As she waltzed beneath the candle lit crystal chandeliers the sweet fragrance of French perfume filled the air. He longed to call out to her as she disappeared into the fragrance of the night. I love this song it is so romantic and powerful. French perfume was a highly sought after commodity and commanded a very high price.

Aidah Di Leoni If I'm not mistaken, this French Perfume is referring to the smell of rum and/or cigar smoke, which would make sense if he is indeed a smuggler as the song states.
@Jourell17 жыл бұрын
It also states that he picked up perfume along with the cigars and rum, the line is pretty quick so its easy to miss. the song is referring to a notorious smuggling route in eastern canada. St Pierre is a small island very close to Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula, which includes the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room, mentioned in the song.

St Pierre is a French island. Smuggling alcohol from it became especially popular during the 1920s. they wold take it into canada and down into the states.

This song isn't about piracy, people, it's about a smuggler or "rum runner" They plied the East Coast of Canada and America and the Great Lakes region during Prohibition, dealing in illicit booze, tobacco, drugs and other contraband and there is still an illegal trade in pot and tobacco to this day. Now can you imagine Disney making a Pirates of The Great Lakes movie? Now that would be fun!
@Jourell1Ай бұрын
The song actually mentions the region its set in. Saint Pierre and Miquelonis a group of French islands within about 15 km of Newfoundland. And yes, it close proximity did make it an infamous smuggling route back in the day

Not to split hairs, but I think it's supposed to be spelled "klicks" when referred to kilometers or kilometers per hour. Great video!

Just a note on the lyrics- I think it's "50 klicks", that is, military slang for kilometers or kilometers per hour, rather than an onomatopoeia. Thank you for posting this!

It's Canadian, the band Great Big Sea is known for performing traditional Newfoundland folk songs in addition to their own material. St Pierre is a French island that's very close to Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula (which includes the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room mentioned in the song) and so would be an easy smuggling route. In this case though, our smuggler is spotted by the mounties (royal canadian mounted police), and crashes into the rocks trying to escape.
