Maybe we should add that the -ard suffix can only be added to a few words and there is no rule for it. There is moto->motard but there is no vélo-vélard or automobile - automobilard There is communist->communard but there is no socialist->socialistard There is vicieux-> vicelard but no obsédé-obsédard etc... But you could invent some if they sound good Note also that there are other suffixes that compete to form a popular and/or pejorative version of a word: américain -> amerloc (or amerloque) parisien -> parigot socialiste -> socialo / socialeux (pej) journaliste -> journaleux (pej) or scribouillard (pej, also apply to writers) travailleur des chemins de fer -> cheminot (popular)/ cheminard (pej) ...

Clochard could come from old french verb "clocher", which meant to gimp, but no more used nowadays. Loubard isn't so simple to explain... it can be related to Loulou (repetition of "Loup" = Wolf) but not sure. this old slan word is not easy to explain.
