Using a brayer is such a great way to generate a fast background with no mess or wasted paint. This shows the basic technique as part one in a series of brayer possibilities.

Hi Leandra ! You’re still the best, even tho this is an “old” video. Just trying fresco finish paint for the SECOND time, because the colors are so vivid & different than other acrylics. But, again, I’m not having great luck because, this time, I’m trying it on my Gelli plate. Even with the recommended amount of retarder it dries as soon as it hits the plate. And it’s impossible to pull up w a layer of PA w regular acrylics. Have you done a gel plate video? Can’t find it if you have I can’t find it? Or can you recommend one? Many thanks!

Hi Lynn. gel printing is possible, but it is a different animal to other paints because of the super fast dry time, so you have to move pretty quick and make decisions fast! And you will never get multiple prints, only one. I suggest you move to a smaller gel plate, the 5x7 or 6x6, then you have more time to use it: apply the paint, apply the texture, bubble wrap stencil stamp etc within 20 secs, then apply light card and pull. The paint will naturally build on the plate, and you will start to lift drier layers as you get a sense of how much paint and how much rubbing is required. To see more, suggest you go to the paperArtsy blog search 'gel printing', 'gel plates' etc, there was a whole topic we did maybe 2 years ago, and any relevant posts will come up with the search. Our bloggers use them a LOT, but like i say, it takes a bit of adjusting. If you are using OUR paint extender, then only 1-2 droplets are required. THe other option is to mix some of our gloss or satin glaze into the paint (1 drop of paint, 1 drop of glaze, blend with brayer) and that also will extend your drying time. HTH, you WILL get the hang of it.

PaperArtsy Rubber Stamps Thanks Leandra - I’ve been using a 5x7 plate, so sounds like I need to read the blog posts then keep working until I figure it out AND resist the urge to use more than a couple drops of retarder (it *is* PA.) Such a temptation to use just a few more ☔️ than it says on the bottle. Thanks too for being specific about how long I have to pull a print. 20 seconds sounds like plenty of time. I don’t usually wait longer than 10. 👏👏👏

This is such a cool video. I was trying to use a Gelli plate with a brayer and your paints and was so frustrated with the way the gelli plate was not working well, so I just ditched the plate and started brayering right on my paper directly. I used all the Seth Apter colors and it was just so beautiful. You don't have to be a professional artist, the paints do all the work for you. I felt like no matter what I did it would look great because these paints are so beautiful!

Hi Kate it is possible to use the GP with our paints, but you have to be quick as there is such a small open time. So I tend to brayer a couple of colours on and press through a stencil, then apply another colour, and take a print, so it's fairly basic GP ideas, and you will only get one, not multiple prints. But there is no wait time, no dry time, so it is an adjustment to slower drying paints. There are actually some super cool effects to be had if the paint dries on the Gellie Plate and then a few laters later, peels back off unexpectedly onto another layer. Glad you found the brayering direct successful, I've been hooked on creating BG's this way for a number of years now and you NEVER tire of it!

Ahhh, that is so cool, thank you for letting me know. I "ripped" back the paper off the plate not realizing I was pulling it off too quickly and a small area of the top layer of the gelli plate stuck to the paper, completely user error on my part. Thank you for letting me know about the slower drying time, I really appreciate you getting back to me with all this helpful information!!!

Can we use dye inks with the brayer?
@PaperArtsy2 жыл бұрын
On a craft sheet, tap ink onto the surface, spritz / mist with water, then use your brayer to pcik up and apply
