Fresh local poi to make menu debut at Hawaii public schools

Students at over 30 Hawaii public schools on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Molokai can now add fresh local poi to their school lunches.

Poi is actually better than daily rice. Many of us have to avoid rice niw because we ate that for every meal. When Capt. Cook first game to the islands, it was theorized that the average height of the men were 6'3". Fish and poi bradda!

❤️I’m Hawaiian Sāmoan and all I can say is I love poi more than rice. But knowing they going serve poi in da school is awesome but I cannot imagine the kids who not Hawaiian or those who don’t like poi going judge and waste.

They should offer it as a side dish for students to take. If they insist upon putting it onto every tray, those who don’t want it will discard in the trash but has to go there, by law. If they offer it and there are unserved, clean left overs, redistribute to the kids or faculty to take home. I hate waste of any kind. Be respectful and responsible about serving it so it doesn’t end up as garbage. I once saw cases of sweet prunes placed on each lunch plate and every piece was trashed, yet it had to be served. That’s ridiculous. Large boxes were literally served and thrown out. I’ll bet if the caf baked spiced prune cake, where they look and taste like raisins, the kids would have devoured them.

They are going to find a lot of poi in the waste bin! Even for locals, poi is an AQUIRED taste....most kids hate it! And its EXPENSIVE.
