From the very beginning of this epic show our beloved general stated loud and clear that he would know when he met the woman who could walk side by side with him not in front nor behind but next to. If he didn't find her he would never marry. He found her in a carriage never even knew what she even looked like but she did something that made him sit up and think she could be the one because she was willing to give up her own family for justice. He discovered what she looked like at the Lantern Festival and he knew right there and then she was it his eyes never seen anyone else there. Even when she kicked that man in the water to show the princess up for the attention seeking idiot she was when someone shouted fire and she took off his face showed panic and off he trotted and saved her. From then on she was his in his mind and NO ONE absolutely no other female entered his head. The emperor knew the empress knew and so did the consort he had found someone to marry. Yet those fickle self centred nasty bitches couldn't understand why she above any one else had managed it. SIMPLY BY BEEN HER SELF.

Quite a good summary about Long Buyi's character. I did get the nuance that sometimes he genuinely was using Cheng Shaoshang. However, after many episodes i have come to realise that fate played them both hard. As soon as she came into his life, he found out many clues for his investigation and this was simply up to viewers interpretation. He never thought that she was his lucky charm. Instead he thought to be the best version of himself for her. I love that attitude.

The only reason she wanted ‘nothing’ to do with the military man was because she had basically never experienced love and was afraid of giving up her freedom because of his status. He didn’t abandon her, he was exiled to the border and SHE broke it off because he kept the truth from her. And he didn’t shack up with that other girl, he made it clear he wanted nothing to do with her but she didn’t listen. She was obsessed with him and lied about him proposing to her, even killed her own husband.

Sometimes I wonder if she was truly disillusioned about her relationship with BuYi or just saying it to satisfy her own desires, or probably both. I like how Jitong character is placed in contrast to shaoshang, both feeling/having ill fate, but one will resort to anything to fulfill her selfish desires while the other still places people she care about ahead of her own needs despite her suffering past. It shows that yes some people may not be as fortunate as othered, but what really matters is what you do with your life and how you act upon it

Back then, most would start rumors of marriage alliances if the groom or maiden was unwilling to marry the other person. The design of the situation was to bring shame upon the families if they did not follow through. The daughter would be expected to kill themselves to end the shame. Most caved because men could marry multiple women. The wife was in charge and the concubines submit to the wife. He was set upon one woman after seeing how multiple women created issues. It's not fair to all. Plus he kind of is hard to deal with. Even Shaoshang admitted he scares her too, but she loves him as well. He can not be swayed by the obsessed girl to commit to marriage at all costs. He loves one for eternity, no matter the outcome.

Jitong was in such a big delusion. She tried to insinuate herself to Ling Buyi in his military camp but was rejected. And then just because she's desperate, she creates an illusion that being near him meant she could marry him. All along throughout their history, Ling Buyi had done nothing but reject this woman. I love how her bragging turned into pleading and begging after Ling Buyi straight out told her he wanted nothing to do with her and accused her of murdering her husband. These desperate women are too much!

Whenever I see this scene I remember the story of Shaoshang's aunt and her former fiancee. The way he's harsh to her when Jitong confronted him... like Shaoshang said back then, how can you treat everyone in the world fairly? No matter how pitiful the orphan girl at the story seemed, the aunt's former fiancee chosing her led him to lose her. Hou Buyi on the other hand relentlessly chooses Shaoshang (with Jitong somehow now being in the orphan girl's position).

I saw a translator's note for this scene on another streaming site referring to the symbolism of the mirror in this context. It went something akin to using a mirror to reflect or ward off the evil eye much like an eye symbol is often used. Since her family and community knew this meaning it is a very public and unambiguously savage rebuttal to her rumormongering about their prospective marriage. As a widow returning to her maiden home, her limited options may have included remarriage until that one symbolic gesture permanently ruined her virtuous reputation in the capital. He doesn't even have to explicitly state how she offended him, his actions speak louder than his words. He is basically saying to her family he won't marry someone of her moral character under any circumstances, and to add insult to injury, he gives them a dowry with advice to speedily marry her off somewhere else. The Luo family didn't want to further aggravate him, and by extension the royal family, if they didn't heed the warning. Since she was no longer a viable political tool, they discarded her in order to distance themselves from being implicated by association further compounding her disgrace.

The Chinese word being used here is 銅鏡 "Tóngjìng" which literally means bronze mirror and applies to the ancient mirrors that were made of polished bronze. If this drama were not set in roughly 40AD, and were set in the modern era, the word for mirror that would be used is 镜子 jingzi, which is the now common glass mirror with a relective back we have all come to know and love.

I think it has something to do with the fact that she’s morally corrupted (since she murdered her husband), so it’s symbolic in the sense that it’s there to ward off evil, and that she should reflect on herself and her behaviour.
