Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. The dad kind of annoys me he never really stood up for his daughter when he knows the way she was treated was wrong. It is like he was there just to make jokes when they had serious conversations. Not going to lie part of me wish Niao Niao would have told them you are my birth parents but you guys are not my parents or something along those lines.

For real! The only time he intervened is when she was receiving military punishment with military sticks for a small issue. And what because men donr interfere in the women's household? Sir your wife commands fierce lady troops and is an imposing general on the battlefield with you. If she's woman enough to lead, you should be man enough to parent and stick up for your mistreated child.

Time period and cultural differences abound when we judge. But Niao Niao spoke louder than anyone else could, as the palace gates shut behind her. They had five years to reflect on their mistakes and regret them. And would spend the rest of their lives making up for it.

I think that this was related to the role of the wife in that period. The wife was the master of the house and if he would get involved, it would put a strong lock against her authority and role in the family.

I feel like her mother had built up this image in her head of a perfect little girl with no flaws or opinions of her own. Years and years away had just led to her fantasising about this ideal girl waiting for her that would be so different from the battlefield, someone that would flatter and be with her at all times like coming home to a puppy. When she found out the money they sent was taken and their daughter intentionally neglected, since they couldnt take it out on the higher up members of the family- she redirected all that resentment towards her own daughter, as if it was her fault she wasn't exactly the doll she had ordered from the factory. This looks like the first time the woman has realised that her daughter has a personality and that her trust has to be earned, not demanded.

Well put. It’s also the times and the culture. The thing is that she came back to realise that her 15 year old daughter (a marriageable age then) can’t read or write. She also doesn’t know the etiquettes or manners for a lady of her family background. And had learnt all the trickeries of her aunt and grandmother which the mother detested. Basically, Niao Niao although incredibly smart would be considered an illiterate country bumpkin and wouldn’t have any future prospects for a good marriage (a parent’s only ambition for a daughter then). And as you said, she was definitely disappointed though it is irrational because it is not even Niao Niao’s fault that she grew up in such a way. But she is only human and probably couldn’t help but imagine that she would come back home to a gentle and poised young lady, which is exactly what Yang Yang was. So all her softness and love went to her whereas although she loved Niao Niao dearly, her harshness came out in response to the initial disappointment and shattering of the image in her mind.

I'm glad at least her parents finally realized how much they hurt NN. And this drama, unlike so many others, gives us the emotional satisfaction of seeing people actually be held responsible for their behavior and mistakes

I am not satisfied with this excuse from her mother.... That she doesn't know how to take care of a daughter, only been around sons. She didn't have any trouble with her niece, which was especially cruel next to her treatment of her daughter. Such a good drama though... Despite that one issue

I think her daughter leaving the mother made the mother realize just how special her daughter is to her. Like the saying goes. You don't realise what you have till it's gone. But i don't fully believe everything The mother says about how she didn't know how to raise a daughter. When the way she treats her niece says otherwise. Plus the woman had fifteen years to get to know her daughter and get use to the mother daughter thing. But chosed to stay away. Than instead of expressing love and affection. She preceeded to mistreat the child whos longed for her mothers return. She may love her daughter. But alot of what she says in this scene seems to be just excuses to try and win her daughter back. I mean the woman acted like she never wanted the girl as her daughter and even tells the poor girl she preferred the cousin over her as the daughter. She proved that she knew how to show motherly love and affection. Yet never did so for her own child? The mother clearly knew how to mother a child. She just did so with the wrong child. The Favoritesm crap. She's only changing so she doesn't lose her daughter. She should've started changing her ways the moment she seen her daughter suffering. Not after her daughter gives up on wanting her birth mothers love as she was getting it else where. I don't understand how she says the mistakes are because she's new to the daughter thing. When she's been treating the cousin like a daughter all this time. Did she not view the cousin as a daughter?

She at least now knew she had wronged Niao, Niao. Now she’s trying to make-up for that lost time, I at least give her a little credit for taking a small step. Though the grandmother is a different issue and maybe harder. Niao, Niao needs time to forgive their transgressions.

Being a Mom comes with no instructions and each child is different. But She let Niao Niao be mistreated and never really adjusted to make it right.. She had to witness Niao Niao suffer to change her ways.. The Grandmother though was greedy and wretched she never apologized or showed remorse for her actions.. The end is a lot of talk as she greedily accepted her dowries. To me it was insincere and meant to curry favor. She never really repented for the mistreatment of her only Granddaughter.. All of her things belonged to Niao Niao anyway... She going to leave her things to Niao Niao when she dies.. Ridiculous.

What's so sad is all the years the mother missed out in this is how she wanted her mother a traitor when her mother first came around her instead she treated the niece with love and affecti and was always putting down the daughter yet what I find amusing is that the sister-in-law the mother sister and law and the Empress were able to find tell it in the daughter that this woman put down so much?

This is one of the very few things, that i consider a flaw in this drama. The story of the mom having a hard time with her daughter, is one of the longest plotlines. Its build up through multiple episodes and important events, but the ending of this plot is kinda meh. Its resolved by 1 honest conversation and 2 acts of love (her family helping her fight in 2 different occasions). While i recognize the feelings the writer wanted to convey, it still feels rushed and kinda forgotten.

a lot of time has passed since and Niao Niao hasn't been home in five years Yang Yang was her cousin who got married and had kids, even Niao Niao's best friend married Niao Niao's older brother and had kids but Niao Niao didn't return at all. she lived in the palace to look after the Empress who had truly shown her kindness and treated her like her own daughter. here, Yuanyi, Niao Niao's mother, has missed her terribly and to some extent feels a bit jealous too. not to mention she had been regretting how she treated Niao Niao after returning. their relationship won't be fixed magically, and perhaps Niao Niao won't ever find the kind of closeness with her mother that she had with the Empress Xuan, but Yuanyi is willing to try to show that she really did care and will always love her. i think that is definitely worth appreciating.

I know that a lot of people hates the mom. But after seeing the entire drama I can relate. Some of us have it very hard to be able to connect to others. So we may behave in a manner where it may seem that we don't care about others. But it is not that. It is that we struggle to communicate. More than once the mother was aware that her actions will drive her daughter away but couldn't find the power to open up towards her. Also, it can be very hard to find a common ground with yourself (because Niao Niao's attitude was clearly taken from her mother). I found it very heart warming when the mother found the power in herself to open up and apologize to her daughter. We can see how much she loved her daughter because more than once she took her daughter's side and got involved in helping her even though Niao Niao never asked for help.
