Nice lesson dude. I haven't played Mandolin in about three year. Haven't even picked one up. This lesson is exactly what I need to get me 'back on track' in no time. Thanks man.

Exactly what I needed! I'm not so good at just watching or hearing something and picking it right up. The technical explanations were perfect for me. Thank you!!

I just bought an Eastman 305 like yours about a month or so ago, and have started learning using a book a friend loaned me call "Mandolin For Dummies." He said "here, I think this will really help." Hey! Wait a minute! Not sure what he was saying there... :) In any case, I come from a bass/guitar/steel background, so getting used to another tuning went pretty quick, but the scale and small neck is where it's really taking some time to get used to it. I really appreciate what you're showing here. Some of these things I found on my own, but you have a bunch of cool licks here. I am employing a lot of what you're doing here, too. Fun instrument!

Tj Weger Hi Tj, Love the 305! Glad to hear that you're making the transition so quickly! It's sometimes tough to go from bass/guitar,tuned in 4ths (ish), to mandolin tuned in 5ths. Since you have such a wide playing background, it won't take your brain too long to calibrate to the shorter mandolin fretboard. You should try messing around with the licks over some of the G Major jam tracks here: www.fretboard-toolbox.com/some-g-major-jam-tracks-1.html, and then do the same with the other track in the other keys here: www.fretboard-toolbox.com/200-free-jam-tracks.html. If you haven't downloaded the Six Licks in the other keys, the link is in the video description. Happy playing! Scott

I know you are just starting out, but I was curious: that would appear to be an Eastman MD-305 you are using--- how do you like it? What are your impressions overall of the instrument?
@FretboardToolbox
@FretboardToolbox 11 жыл бұрын
I have numerous friends who are professional musicians, and they always want to plink around on my Eastman 305. They usually compliment it and then just leave me with the frustration that's it's going be a long while until I play like that. :-)
@hammill444
@hammill444 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know that frustration all too well. Thanks for the message. I'm looking to pick up an Eastman-- or the comparable Loar LM-400. But I must say-- from what I've heard-- including the sound of your own mandolin--- I'm leaning towards the Eastman. Just a sweeter sound.

+Richard Willette Hi Richard, Fair critique! In my defense though, I'm obviously not a hot picker, but I've found that lots of hot pickers can't explain to me why or how things work very well. I wrote those books to help me try to understand/see the how and why, because I'm a big picture guy. Also, I'm a high school biology teacher so I naturally talk a lot. :-) I'll keep your thoughts in mind when I make my next video though! Happy playing, Scott
