Not really, they were actually designed for tapping on bass and guitar (that two-handed piano-like technique they like nowadays), Gruv Gear indeed sell a 'FRETWEDGE HEADSTOCK DAMPENER' which is designed to kill ringing at the nut :P

I'm an old dude who started in bands in the 70's. I just use a bandana around the strings on the headstock. Does the same thing but for a buck 49.

Your comment is very similar to mine I told him I use an old Cotton sock ripped into very thin shreds and then I wrap it around the strings right on the nut

Exactly. A wrap looks a bit nicer than a sock but does nothing more. Jimmy clips look eveb better than wraps.

I never thought to use them on any of my 6-strings but on my 8-string, where it's harder to keep everything muted and there's a wider potential for unwanted noise, I find a fret-wrap to be a must.

I noticed it right away. I have only see guys in the studio use those for recording metal. It was a noticeable with cabinet micd. It was quite noticable when you had the fret wrap on when you were recording. Sounds amazing.

I find that it's difference is most noticeable when you go from something like a chug to a rest. For instance, I was wondering why my sound took so long to get to silence (with a gate in place) after muting with both hands after a chug. I noticed my strings above the nut were sympathetically vibrating and were actually coming through the pickups, which I really didn't think made much of a difference before. I use a floyd rose bridge, so I can't really do the whole halfway over the nut thing, but as far as eliminating noise from the strings above the nut it does a great job. That, and whenever I need to record a string skipping tapping lick it definitely comes in handy because those licks are a bitch and a half to mute.

Oh yeah....on a tunomatic put a bit of pickup foam between hard tail and bridge....does more than wrap on the nut.

hi great stuff, I use the fretwrap either before the first fret, on the neck like what you did to eliminate vibration noise of strings outside the fretboard. Secondly, this would show more effect and use of the fretwratp, i also put it on the first fret whenever I do shredding, pull-offs, hammering, arpeggio, other lead guitar stuff. It cleans out a lot as it mutes the strings that I don't press or use. No more palm muting.

Guthrie Govan has used one for years. So, yeah. And the comments regarding the other side of the tuneomatic are spot on. I suspect there are lots of more improvisational solutions, e.g. foam or a very large rubber band, but the wraps do make you look like you know what you're doing.

I felt like the fret wrap barely darkened the tone. But did superior dampening to perhaps even a noise suppressor. The fret wrap plus a noise suppressor with a treble or pedal boost would sound sick.

i think the fret wraps work best for things like tapping, anything melodic that requires very clean sound(with gain of course) and maybe ppl who cant rly play clean like for example me. Great video tho!

Only thing I could tell was the red one seemed to mute the whole sound like riding the damper pedal on a piano. I remember guys in the 70s weaving boot laces around the string above the nut, sometimes between the bridge and tail piece on old trapeze set ups.

First time I saw them was a few years back watching Michael Angelo Batio. They were billed for high gain, high volume and very hot pickups. A lot of the finger tapping crowd had them and as you said, now the heavy darker tone's are using them. It's cool, I've not tried them yet.

I have a sterling music man axis guitar (cheap-o import copy of the EVH guitar from the early 90s). The guitar has a strat style trem system but no string trees up at the head. It's been making excess vibrations that sound awful when you're playing power chords since I bought it and I tried everything to fix it. Noiseless springs, packing foam in the bridge cavity etc., and nothing worked until somebody suggested putting some electrical tape over the strings right behind the nut and that fixed the problem immediately. I since ordered one of these because it will just look cooler than a piece of tape. These things work, but a sock, a wrist band, a piece of tape or a scrunchie would work just as well and would cost less. I like it though because it looks better aesthetically than the alternatives.

The dampening effect makes the strings feel a bit tighter; the intonation will be a hair sharp with them on. I use foam under the strings at the nut to kill the ringing sound. If you also put foam behind a Tune-o-matic bridge, it can make the guitar sound sterile. It's probably ideal though metal players that want a super tight sound.

Not at all. Just wast a good demo. It makes a big difference. Something as simple as laying your hand on the strings and then removing it can make your Strings ring out. If it's wrapped it makes no sound at all.

The undertones are even more noticeable on a fender style head stock particularly the G string that rings in the D sharp realm once someone pointed it out to me I never went without a fret wrap, hair bow, or rubber band lol

If you like it try on a locking nut. My theory so far is it may muting the neck not the strings. There's next to nothing there to mute, you could use a scarf. Would not surprise me to find out a odd tuning has odd effects on a guitar body/neck

I honestly thought these things were used mostly to stop the constant feed back coming from your amplifier when high gain is on. I love metal but that crap is annoying. Turn your amp to high gain. You'll probably hear a buzzing sound (espescially if you have a crappy ten watt amp like I do) now put your fingers over the strings over the nut, like a fret wrap is used for. The feedback cleans right up. That alone might make one of these worth it for me

lol... for YEARS guitar players have been using handkerchiefs or sweatbands or a velcro strip...hell I've even used an old sock..lol. but usually as a dampener on the first fret. (hence, the name "FRET wrap"). I've never used one as a "Headstock wrap". lol but hey, if that works for you.. by all means wrap your headstock. lol. however, I definitely didn't notice ANY sound advantage to wrapping the headstock. you can place foam under a noisy bridge if it rattles or vibrates.... but I've never come across a noisy headstock. and that CHARVEL is BEAUTIFUL my man..

I’m not a bass player, I’m a guitar player that owns a bass for when he needs to record one on occasion. LOL Assuming your Floyd Rose Guitar is also equipped with a locking nut, as most of them are, you’re probably not going to see much of a difference because the locking nut already isolated a lot of that string noise that the Fretwraps are designed to dampen.

Tried them a couple of years ago and I didn’t notice a subtle difference also I’m not a fan of how they look either. Looks like a dog collar around the nut/headstock area. What I’ve been doing if I want to get rid of that type of noise and vibration is put a piece of soft rubber like foam under the strings above the nut and it does the job and also the foam is black and small enough that it blends in with the headstock

I use these, have for a while now. However another use is when I am going to be doing a lot of trick soloing for showing off I move it down on the nut as well to help mute the strings. Michael Angelo Batio does this on his multi neck guitars as well to mute stings. Of course I can't play like that but trick that helps. However what want to know. What you doing with the tune you recorded. Quite honestly I would love to have it as a backing track to jam over. Or just a thought. How about a contest for your channel. Give like a month for some people to record a solo over it. Vote for best solo. I like the riff honestly.

That’s not really what they do when normal riffing. If you keep these covering your strings open notes will be muffled and not full. It’s only purpose on the fretboard is muting for tapping and lead style stuff really. It’s not for not needing muting techniques and good playing technique. With them past the nut they don’t stop that, they stop the ringing behind the nut.

I assist in recording bands at a Guitar Center Studios and the Fretwraps have come in handy numerous times for me and my recording crew. My best story about them is this: once a punk band came in and the guitarist was playing a Fender Jazzmaster, which has what a lot of string space between the bridge & tailpiece. The ringing from that guitar was unbearable and while it can be a cool effect you can toy with, the band didn't want it on their recording. The ringing went right away as soon as I put a Fretwrap over the strings behind the bridge. I was so impressed, I ordered a few Fretwraps for my own use; cannot recommend these suckers enough.

Every Jazzmaster on the planet needs to have a buzz stop installed. Why Fender doesn't just start popping those things on standard I will never know. Super simple fix for like...$20.

@@bradmerilic6848 I agree somewhat, but I also think I know why fender hasn't installed that on Jazzmasters from the factory. We all know the experimental players love the Jazzmaster for playing behind the bridge. With a buzz-stop installed, there wouldn’t be any notes behind the bridge. And knowing Fender, their invention might not be removable, further turning experimental players off from the Jazzmaster.

Fret wraps or a piece of foam or whatever used to dampen the strings takes away that harmonic squeal from super high gain and lower tunings. I honestly didn't even hear the issue with your rig and guitar so the fret wrap isn't really needed. I closed my eyes and didn't really notice a difference with it on or off. I need a dampener for my detuned guitar because I get that pinging/squeal harmonic thing but only when running in high gain and especially when doing palm mutes. Tip: Cut a little block of foam you get from your Seymour Duncan or the like pickup packaging and wedge that just under the strings behind the nut. Weird pinging and harmonics will disappear.

Thanks for a wonderful demo with drums. People rarely do it. In my opinion the fret wraps work by removing buzz behind the nut. It must be checked in Lead solos as well.

it sounds to me like a lot of people who use these things or just using it to make up for the fact that they don't know how to Palm mute good enough. The only remedy I could see 4 sympathetic harmonics is that if you're playing a Stratocaster with a tremolo bridge stuff some cotton in between the springs on the back. And wrap a really thin piece of (preferably an old sock) around the strings right on the nut. If you need anything more than that you need to check yourself and not your equipment.

It’s not about palm muting. I think most any guitar player knows how to do that. Personally, I don’t mind spending $10-12 on something that is actually designed for the purpose, especially on my $3000 Gibson. Wrapping an old sock or stuffing foam underneath the bridge seems like a helluva lot more work and awfully cheap. LOL

I got one for my tune o matic bridge guitar. It didn’t do much for me. Turns out most of the rattle was coming from the bridge, not above the nut. It was only $11 on amazon so I gave it a try 🤷🏻‍♂️

I use them in all my Fender Basses tuned in standard tuning because I hear sympathetic resonance vibrations mainly on the A String of my American Standard Jazz, Precision and Japanese Mustang Bass going from the nut to the tuning posts. Other people don't hear the noise when I play but stupid little noises like that bug the fuck out of me. They say the new Fluted Tuners on the American Professionals fix that problem but I've already got what I got so that's what I got.

Bass players have been doing this for ages by putting foam on the bridge end. It’s going to hurt you if you do anything with open-strong sustain, but then again, so much of this tone is coming from compressed massive gain the guitar tone it’s self matters so little in the equation that you won’t notice it live. Maybe use as a recording option, but...

I’m pretty sure it sounds slightly more clean to me. It’s pretty subtle though I think so it’s probably ok with or without one. This is also a 6 string so it might be more noticeable on a 7-9 string. This is one called a Skatecaster from a series discontinued a few years ago called the Desolation series. The body shape is a throwback to the old Charvel Surfcaster from the early 90’s, which I believe is also where the Dominion came from.

I'm getting closer to buying a used charvel. I'm a metal guy but love clean on a single coil neck. I've retro fitted a single coil surround that fits in a humbuckers space on my explorer and my old dinky. What's a good charvel that will be good on the used market, I have a thing about not paying more than like 5,600 bux. Any problems or setup issues, I'm more than capable to correct.

The problem with Fretwraps are they are overpriced for such a simple piece of sponge or cloth It's not really necessary for people who are good at muting . I don't know many Famous Guitarist who use Fretwraps either (maybe I'm just not researching enough) so probably not as necessarily as you think. But whatever makes you flow, you do you, plus they do look good on your instrument.

I know a few guitarist that use hair ties to deaden strings. Tried it myself it works but you need to figure out how tight to put them . I really couldn't hear a lot of difference on your recordings bit sounds like to me just like with hair ties you have to play it to feel the difference.

As usual a good show. There’s a difference, but I don’t think you need to bye one. Personally I prefer with out these. But maybe live they could be a tool. But still you could easily make them self. I used headset , but I always use Floyd rose so I am not to judge. But I will try it out on my sg lion. I think all could cut an old cloth and use it. A slightly difference yep, better? Interesting. I don't really play enough heavy stuff to warrant these (at least I don't think so) and was mainly looking at them as a means to muffle my hypersensitive nylon string when it's on a stand, poor baby. I can see they might be handy after all, though. Thanks for the review!

I used all my ex girlfriends hair things as a fret wrap. Hell I've even used the foam insulation from a window AC unit. They do work up to a point.

Where I live, we had 3 months of a light lockdown which ended in June 2020. Life has been normal ever since. Cheers, S

@@RobertWJackson I can’t remember. A friend of mine in NC sent me a link to a good source, such as the NY Post. People in New York had a protest during which they chanted “Save Australia”. It got reported here and people were saying “Save us from what?” The only thing we have to do in South Australia is wear masks. It’s the only mandatory thing. People wear masks here because everyone wants to look after the “community” rather than look out for their own interests. We do things in our own way which is different from many countries. The community/country comes first, and by looking after the community, we look after our families and ourselves.

Dudes... They remove the excess ringing, adding clarity, especially for low tuned fast bands like Allegaeon. A standard tuned guitar playing vanilla metallica doesn't need them true, but fast low bands do.. forrealz

I see no difference worth talking about, that tune is pretty cool but it sucks that your bass lines follow too closely to your guitar riffs, imo it would sound more dynamically better if there was diversity between the two instruments, imo.

Their only good in a recording situation . There's some difference in recording and using a interface . It's not practical in a live situation though. It doesn't make that much difference. They look pretty stupid on your guitar imo
