it's amazing how quickly yesterday came around from the demolition early January last year! and I'm amazed at how accurate this video is of what Friars Walk looks like! last night the atmosphere and the excitement was absolutely incredible, you could feel the buzz! So proud of what has been achieved in our little city, I think we can safely say Newport is regaining its former glory!

I guess the glory is tarnishing very quickly,have you seen the state of Newport lately..... Well done Newport city council you have killed this town center all on your own hope there proud of themselves... And u say friar's walk is a success have you seen it lately... It looks like a junkys town and the crime rate has shot up... At least you couldn't hide in John frost Square!!!

yes it was done so spineless by Newport council.... Ever since I was a boy,and I'm 49 now that mural was never defaced. I'm a graffiti artist,from back in the day and I total respected it,it was art..... And people of Newport respected it,it's a shame that Newport city council are disrespectful vandals.... Bas#*rds... And r.i.p Franky lodge,who always sang next to it.....

That's horrible news. For me, the mural and the clock are what I remember the most about Newport. I moved to Spain in 2003, but still have fond memories as a kid of seeing the mural and and the clock and then going to get some fish and chips from the shop that was just around the corner. After seeing some videos of Newport nowadays, it looks like it lost it's charm and looks rather modern and generic.

Shame it didn’t work out. Newport is back to the same place it was before it happened. Upper dock street never even got the local shops and never will, that back side has never been used. GBK pulled out before the centre even opened. Debenhams the anchor of friars walk. Yeah you can say that again, when that went the whole thing came crashing down. Friars Walk came 10-20 years too late. The pandemic didn’t help though.

The problems are:- 1)Cwmbran was built and took away Npt's "critical mass" 2)Tat replaced quality old Victorian buildings. 3)Mass exodus of skilled labour amongst the young.

What?!! Friars Walk will create hundreds of jobs! Theses businesses aren't going to run themselves! This is exactly what Newport needs. It's been crying out for this for way too long, and it will boost Newport's economy far beyond its ever known.

+TheRedfoot86 Crying out for what? More retail space? It already has loads, and they are empty. What amazing new stores do we have? Low end clothes stores, a handful of chain restaurants and a small cinema. Cut the business rates and get shops in the high street.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing9 жыл бұрын
+Richard Morgan Indeed. The average joe just thinks a new building will change that. It adds little to the empty shell of Newport.
@TheRedfoot869 жыл бұрын
Academy of Historical Fencing I hope you're not referring to me when you say "average Joe". Newport is a city. A city that now has to live up to that status. Friars Walk is much more than what you imagine it to be. The whole development has brought Newport centre into the 21st Century. Never has Newport gone through such a transformation. You talk about the " empty shell" that is Newport, yet this development makes Newport much more appealing to shoppers, people not only from Newport but from all over the country. People want places to eat out, people still want to go to the movies. They also want the "low end clothes stores" as its affordable for the majority. This is Newport, not London! As for the high street, it has failed due to online shopping. No amount of extra promotion for independent businesses can compete with online bargains, something that is also more convenient too with free deliveries. Kingsway used to be teeming with retail chains and many people flocked there on a daily basis. Again, many of these stores have gone bankrupt, failing to keep up with the emergence of online shopping. No new development can counter that, that is why many retail chains have supersized their outlets on the outskirts of town centres. This is not unique to Newport, this is happening all over Britain. Indeed, Friars Walk will not change the whole structure of Newport, but at the heart of a great city is a great town centre that is welcoming and appealing. Newport will not change over night, but this new development shows her potential. Newport will always play second fiddle to Cardiff, but until now, Newport has even found it hard to compete with Swansea! People forget that Newport is an old place, with historical importance. There are the slums of Newport admittedly, but the greatest of cities all have problems. London has rundown areas. New York isn't just about the skyscrapers in Manhattan. But then again, Newport is not striving to be any of the world-reknowned cities. Friars Walk will help Newport's shopping experience. It will also bring a much needed economic boost. The whole development has created much needed employment. Newport has been dead for a long time. Our beloved, yet neglected Castle is crumbling away. The Usk will always be an eyesore, but the new apartments, the campus, footbridge, riverfront, and water displays has brought life to a once dull city. OK, the high street and commercial street needs rejuvenating, but everything cannot be fixed at the same time. These development programmes take a lot of planning, restructuring and of course, money! Friars Walk will help in creating the money needed to sustain and rebuild Newport. Time will tell, but the future looks bright for Newport. I agree with you on cutting the business rates, but I'm far too aware that that alone cannot secure prosperity for small businesses. Small businesses cannot compete with online shopping. It's a sad truth, but the statistics are there.

Cineworld gone, Debenhams gone. Freeloading free rent chain restaurants gone. Still the number of smackheads, skating nobends and tramps has shown impressive year on year growth!
