WHAT HAPPENED
We don't have much information about this skydive because the video was submitted with minimal comment from the student, who was at a non-US dropzone. (We don't know if it was a USPA affiliate.) This was described as a AFF "Level 6 jump." In short, the student went into a flat spin and the instructor attempted to stop it but largely failed. They then lost control of the student, the instructor sunk out, and watched the student deploy from a hundred feet away. The student reported some line twists but landed safely. Sadly, the incident caused the student to quit skydiving, they stated, "It's too dangerous (maybe I'll go to the wind tunnel)..."
WHY DID IT HAPPEN
Questionable Instruction
Again, we have minimal information on this jump, but suffice to say that this whole incident appears to have happened due to a instructor who either didn't have the confidence, or the ability, to get in there and stop a rotation that rapidly put their student into the spin cycle. Admittedly, once a student starts spinning, staying on level - let alone get in there and stop the spin - becomes much harder. However, the video is deeply suggestive of an issue with the instruction here.
First, while we know that sometimes a great student suddenly has a brain fart, this jumper does not look like they had the control requisite to pass their Cat C jump. Further, while - yes - the instructor initially attempted to stop the spin, it needs to be noted is that, as one experienced AFF-I put it, "The student never earned the right to be released after that. The instructor should have held on until the student corrected the body position before being released."
HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED
Enforcement of Standards
We normally love to crack jokes and add some light humor into Friday Freakout, but this is a particularly rough video, and it sadly made someone think that a sport dedicated to safety, is too dangerous for them. The first way this could have been prevented was by the jumper having not been cleared for this level of AFF jump. Further, if this instructor wasn't capable of handling this type of instruction, they shouldn't have been allowed to take a student up. No student should be allowed to go up into the air with an instructor who is incapable of assessing the need for them to intervene in a flat spin and then making that intervention. Lastly, if you know your student is of a body size you cannot fly with, you should have good enough judgment to have someone else take them up.

Respectfully, the comments in the "Why did it Happen" section are inappropriate. Meaning too mild. Sorry... The instructor should be instantly banned for life and publicly shamed. I understand your willingness to stay moderately neutral, but this is malpractice at its second highest level. The death of the student would be the only higher level. I can bet this wasn't the first time the student went into a flat spin with this instructor. The student was unstable from the beginning. Granted, not badly out of control, but significantly enough for the gap between instructor and student to be much smaller.

Appearantly, the instructor has a faster fall rate than the student when the student got into the flat spin. I think he tried to slow down the fall, but he just couldn't do it. That's why I always suggest instructors should have a slower fall rate than students. If you are a big guy, it's a good idea that you put your camera jacket on.

The idea of something like _this_ happening to me during AFF was the reason I decided to do 30 minutes of tunnel time before I even started. These kinds of videos always freaked me out and that tunnel time helped me breeze through my student jumps. I feel like she's lucky she didn't black out!! And I'm really curious what the instructor was even there for 🧐 He didn't bother to help her when she really needed him to. Scary to watch.

I’m a hang glider pilot with two tandem jumps and about ten minutes in a wind tunnel. This student saying she’s done jumping, but might get into the tunnel is a sign of a very wise person. She knows what she doesn’t know: body control. She knows the best place to learn it: the tunnel. I just hope she also knows, but was just kinda leaving out, that her instructor was inadequate to keep her safe on that jump, and that she needs to find better instruction before she ever decides to go up again. I’ve been in a similar-ish situation being taught paragliding by an inadequate instructor. I stopped. It was the only reasonable choice.

Can I ask what state the inadequate paragliding instructor was in? Just curious where that might be happening.
@ahgflyguy

@@dsoccer3187 this was 15 years ago, but it was in Las Vegas. If you’re interested, I’d say that the way to start is by asking to front what the safety curriculum looks like, how that part of it is taught, and at what stage in the instruction. I dated the communications director for the National hang gliding and paragliding association for several years. The paragliding instruction curriculum and the paragliding curriculum for prospective instructors was just not well developed then. And I have no idea if it’s better now.

Had this exact experience in a Cat C or Cat D - after a few rotations, my instructor came in and grabbed my foot, immediately stopping the spin. She treated it like nbd after landing and suggested I hit the tunnel before my next jump. If it hadn't been for the casual competence of my instructor, I probably would've quit the sport, too.

Everyone is fairly criticizing the instructor but this is the student's fault as well. The student was out of control for at least 35 seconds and forgot the 5-second rule and didn't pull. I am a skydiving student and I am struggling with stability. I have been spinning out of control in all possible directions a few times but I stuck with my EP and always pulled after 5 seconds.

The issue is the instructor. An instructor is expected to be able to match the students fall rate, if he or she cannot match it then they should not be flying with the student, even if the student goes into a flat spin they should be capable of matching the fall rate.

She must be in the Southern Hemisphere because she is spinning to the left. If she was in the Northern Hemisphere, she would flat spin to the right due to the Corealis Effect: On the earth, the effect tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern and is important in the formation of cyclonic weather systems.

I had something like that happened one time when I was jumping with some one who only was a few jumps off student status. I was not an instructor. We did a quick two-way and broke it and he just went into a flat spin. He was bouncing around so much I couldn’t close and then he was going so fast I didn’t want to. The spin got so fast. He finally just pulled like that student did. When I landed, I went to the DZ owner and told him he had to go back on student status.

Lyrics to the Song by Don McLean called Dreidel. I feel like a spinning top or a dreidel The spinning don't stop when you leave the cradle You just slow down Round and around the world you go Spinning through the lives of the people you know We all slow down How you gonna keep on turnin' from day to day? How you gonna keep from turnin' your life away? No days you can borrow, no time you can buy No trust in tomorrow, it's a lie I feel like a spinning top or a dreidel The spinning don't stop when you leave the cradle You just slow down Round and around the world you go Spinning through the lives of the people you know We all slow down How you gonna keep on turnin' from day to day? How you gonna keep from turnin' your life away? And I feel like I'm dippin' and divin' My sky shoes are spiked with lead heels I'm lost in this star car I'm drivin' But my air sole keeps pushin' big wheels My world is a constant confusion My mind is prepared to attack My past, a persuasive illusion I'm watchin' the future it's black What do you know? You know just what you perceive What can you show? Nothing of what you believe And as you grow, each thread of life that you leave Will spin around your deeds and dictate your needs As you sell your soul and you sow your seeds And you wound yourself and your loved one bleeds And your habits grow, and your conscience feeds On all that you thought you should be I never thought this could happen to me I feel like a spinning top or a dreidel The spinnin' don't stop when you leave the cradle You just slow down Round and around this world you go Spinnin' through the lives of the people you know We all slow down How you gonna keep on turning from day to day? How you gonna keep from turning your life away? I feel like a spinning top or a dreidel The spinning don't stop when you leave the cradle You just slow down

If you are shadows like a propeller, you will spin like propeller. Slow down the video, & notice that the student was not level, body to limbs. At category C, one must know what causes the body to turn, to stop turning, & to begin turning the opposite direction. If not, it's the instructor's fault. Hopefully, the student did get some tunnel time & then get get back on the plane after dialing it all in.

Lazy instructor, but also some people shouldn't skydive, or should become tunnel flyers first. We see a total lack of athleticism/coordination on display here. Just bend your arms slightly differently and the spin stops. Fighting to maintain a heading is one thing, but spinning out of control in the same direction, making no attempt to fight it, maybe it was poor instruction...

It has nothing to do with skills/coordination, he does not even attempt to actively correct. Don't know how it was for you on your first jumps, but most people aren't fully aware of what they are doing at that point yet. Touching heels and toes or touching finger tips may already have been enough instruction to snap out of there and feel the right body position. The wind tunnel is good to increase your skills, but also used a lot as an excuse for lack of personal attention for your students, and a lack of skills from the instructors.

If in Chicago land area, come to CSC. The AFF-Is there actually can do their responsibility to their students.

The instructor is worse than the student. He didn't even make the smallest of attempts to assist the student. He just watched until the student pulled a good 100M away.

This is what I don't like about AFF, students not having learned the basics step by step being allowed to jump from what 3000 or 4000 meters?

I only have ~50 jumps so this is not an expert assessment but...At 0:27, after the instructor stabilized and let go, the student kept legs and arms fully out. At 0:30 you can see the instructor with both arms out. So, it's possible that there was just no way for the (likely larger) instructor to get up to the student because they were sprawled out?
@1574me
@1574me Жыл бұрын
Yes, the instructor sunk out. The spinning both helps the student spread out and contributes to the floating, but the instructor needs to be able to catch her. As someone else pointed out, it looks like he (I assume it's a he) keeps his chin up looking at her when he initially goes low, which as I'm sure you know, is a big no-no. And ultimately, as the video description says, if the size difference is big enough that it might cause this kind of issue, then this instructor should not be on the jump, and the student should be assigned a floatier instructor.

@@1574me makes sense. I guess instructors I had that were larger also always wore ultra baggy clothes since I'm small and floaty :)

I've only skydived twice, both tandem, but I think I'm more competent of a skydiver than that instructor is. I know I'm not skilled enough to stop a bad situation of another person, and would therefore decline to take a new skydiver up. That instructor literally left that student to fend for themselves after 1 attempt to stop the spin. If you're not a competent instructor, don't put anyone else's life into your hands. Plain and simple.
