*WHAT HAPPENED* On his tenth wingsuit jump, this jumper was getting ready to do a two-way. As his partner got up, he felt the weight shift on his back and asked his buddy to take a look. Fortunately, the second jumper was already behind him because a second later, as he checked out the back of his friend's container, the deployment bag plopped right into his arms! The jumpers quickly told the pilot what had happened and communicated that one jumper was still going to exit while the second would ride down with the plane. *WHY DID IT HAPPEN* Rubbing Around One issue with wingsuits is that they make moving around the aircraft a bit awkward and wingsuit pilots often end up having a bit more difficulty getting comfortable for the ride to altitude. Here, we were told that the jumper was leaning against the side of the plane and believes that he may have rubbed the back of his container against one of the nozzles used to provide oxygen for high-altitude jumps. That rub may have resulted in popping the closing pin on his container. Gear Choices The jumpers noted that the wingsuit pilot’s deployment bag “was pretty odd, it had a slippery construction and was too large for his container.” We can’t say much about oddities or material choices, but using a deployment bag that is too large for a container can make a pack job difficult to close and can result in either a hard pull or - if the container wasn’t closed properly and the pin wasn’t all the way in - easier to pop. *HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED* Stay Aware of Your Surroundings When getting onto the aircraft, riding to altitude, getting up to check your gear, or preparing to exit, it’s important to always maintain awareness of how your container may be rubbing against various surfaces of the plane. Doing so can ensure that you notice and avoid obvious snag points. Proper Gear Selection Every time we get a video where someone tells us about a known gear issue, we shake our heads a little. If you know your gear isn’t properly sized, don’t use it! Skydiving is an inherently dangerous sport and the gear we use is designed precisely and is supposed to be used within specific parameters set by the manufacturer to lower the dangers as much as possible. *ADDITIONAL NOTES* Stay with Your Friend? Before the cameraman decides to exit, the aircraft pilot asks these jumpers if they are both going to fly the plane down. This brings up an interesting point. By exiting the aircraft, the cameraman left his buddy in there by himself, with the aircraft door open, and a route by which the loose gear could sneak out. When that happens, the jumper, aircraft and pilot can all be at risk. Granted, it appeared that his friend had the deployment bag and bridle under his control, minimizing the chance that it would somehow sneak out and cause a full premature deployment. However, there is an argument that the safest possible option would have been to close the door and ride down with his friend, so we just wanted to bring it up as a discussion point.

10th WS jump and he is jumping a suit with such surface and power? I was on my 25th still using the smallest one piece afer having gone through track suits and 2 piece (skirt and jacket) wingsuits... If his suit goes rogue good luck for the guy... + That loop on his container must have been more worn that Mia Khalifa's name on the online Hub, for just popping as a pinhata on the first step the guy took after sitting on the bench.

@@Ucho469 Lol it was my 10th jump of the boogie more like, and my 110th ws jump though, and the suit was a rented LowKi. Solid suit. Edit: It's worded weird: they say it was cameraman's 10th ws jump on a Swift, and he crushed it all boogie. He was more on my level than jumpers with 5 times as many as jumps.

Close the door and ride down. Save your pilot and plane and friends.
@DanielArnett8 ай бұрын
Of course I know him; he's me! A few things: 1. I knew the closing loop was stretched out and I was in too much of a hurry to fix it. Dont be like me. 2. I let my rig get close to those oxygen nozzels. I should have kept it more to the center. Don't be like me. 3. I felt a 'pop' in my rig and immediately got my bro's attention, okay yeah you should do that one. I could feel a lot of bridle when I reached back and knew it was probably going to be a plane ride down. 4. The deployment bag is a bit too big, but a friend made it and its a little sentimental for me so I deal with it. Maybe a rigger could make some arguments for why a properly sized d bag would help keep my closing loops from stretching, but I don't think it made an acute impact here. 5. The comments here about riding the plane down are actually really good points. If we had stopped to think about it; it would have been much safer to have cameraman close the door and ride the plane down. It was pretty unnerving to have my bag out in the plane. Here the wingsuit was actually kind of helpful because the material of the suit made it easy for me to cover all the lines and bridle. Everything was wrapped up under my suit. 6. That waddle of shame out the plane holding my full diaper behind my rig was punishment enough.

you have ten Wingsuit jumps and already in a freak? that's also poor judgement in my opinion, sorry if I'm wrong and its a smaller suit, but still, I can tell by your friends exit he also doesn't have it under control. The pilot screaming to get out also probably didn't help, I hate when they do that, wingsuiters can get back to de DZ always (if someone navigates that is)

Mate with that attitude about your gear you shouldn't be jumping. You are a ris to all your skydivng mates. Just a few days ago a plane went down in Switzerland after a deployment in the door killing the pilot. 11 skydivers managed to get out fortunately. Deployment bags are matched with container size for a reason. And not shortening the closing loop is highly irresponsible.
@DanielArnett8 ай бұрын
@@bzarry I addressed that elsewhere. Teem worded that poorly. It was the cameraman's 10th wingsuit jump, so not really relevant to the incident. We met at a boogie, and this was after the load organizer had us split into smaller groups.

That is a reminder how important checks are before the door opens and before moving to the door! And a buddy check is always better! Because it's an Otter and the pilot can't close the door...the other guy should have stayed and close the door.

I remember one man (instructor with thousands of jumps) quickly fixed such an issue in a plane for their cameraman... and guess what? bridle was misrouted so cameraman has a reserve ride after his job (main didn't open at all). So in this video I see near perfect reaction to such kind of issue. Plane is big enough so sitting there with open door and properly grabbed gear looks safe enough for me. In smaller plane or with more messy issues or with left confident skydiver I would advice smb left to close the door. And safest possible option as always is to stay at home in some peaceful country with good weather.

while somebody can argue that there might be things the camera could have done differently....this is a great example of what to do! Camera noticed the problem, grabbed the jumper and made him sit down and notified the pilot....all things considered this should be applauded for all involved. Jumper felt something wrong, camera acted accordingly, and notified pilot of situation. Hell, this could have saved the PAC pilot last week (speculation, we dont know what happened before exit)

As a Twin Otter jump pilot, one of my biggest fears is a deployment in the cabin. Does this ever occur? I would not want to find out what would happen if a chute came out and got taken by the slipstream. Anyone experience this?
