WHAT HAPPENED
This skydiver - with 277 jumps - was at 1100 ft. in gusting winds when he decided to do a toggle 360 before starting his landing pattern. He didn't realize that one of his canopy's cells had already collapsed, and as he tried to whip it around, the rest of the canopy began to collapse and twisted him up. Fortunately, the canopy reinflated, and he was out of the twists at around 700ft.
WHY DID IT HAPPEN
Aggressive Toggle Turn With Partial Collapse
By not realizing that his canopy already had a collapsed end cell, this jumper put himself into a bad situation. Jamming the toggle on that side as far down as he could while in turbulent and gusting winds likely initiated the further collapse.
HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED
Canopy Checks
The jumper admitted that “one cell was already collapsed and [he] didn't notice upon opening.” On the first day of AFF, jumpers are taught that - after deploying - they should check that the canopy is square, slider down, and the canopy is steerable. During that check, the jumper should have noticed that his end cell had collapsed, which at full altitude isn’t really a big deal. (Heck, there are some canopies that regularly have issues with end cells not wanting to inflate on opening.) However, the remedy is pretty simple, this jumper could have attempted to reinflate that end cell by simply pumping the toggles.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Don’t Spiral In the Landing Pattern!
To many jumpers, the most glaring aspect of this video will be that, at just about 1,000 feet, this jumper - without really checking his airspace - decided to pull a toggle 360. Yes, that’s what probably caused his canopy to collapse, but outside of that, this is dangerous because once you’re in the pattern, you’re supposed to be flying in a conservative manner. At that altitude, everyone else in the sky is expecting you to be predictable, to keep going in the direction you’re going until you’re ready to turn onto your base leg.

@thebarkingmouse I'm not sure how that tracks, other than to say that these videos scare you. Training makes skydiving safe. These videos are good instructional aide but they're all the rare occurrences in one spot. This doesn't represent the vast majority or jumps. Even if it did, most teem videos are very recoverable and mostly avoidable

277 jumps and they don't know how to collapse their slider. Of course if they knew how to do that they would have looked up and seen the collapsed end cell.

your description is wrong. Yes he had a collapse on one side, but then, because of too much brake-input he stalled one side of the canopy, it spinned, started flying again when the canopy was behind him, because he put his hand up (01:10), shoot forward while he was turning, which made him twist
@TheDAVE858
@TheDAVE858 5 ай бұрын
Someone needs to take a canopy piloting course. He had half the brakes pulled on the opposite side while pulling full toggle turn, no awareness of the fact that his canopy wasn't even inflated & zero harness input to coordinate the turn. Let alone the fact that he's in the landing pattern and makes zero attempts at a safe & predictable approach.

Had this happen (sans line twists) on jump 30 or so. I induced it and later learned why. The S&TA, who was on the load with a student, saw it and approached me in the landing area and said, "That was a stall spin. We're not gonna do anymore of those, are we?" Nope, we are not.

I learned not to do sharp, snappy turns at 1,100 feet in a similar way on jump #27. My air space was clear and i wanted to bleed a bit of altitude. I stabbed the left toggle really fast after coming out of a slow, flat right turn. My canopy hadn't quite caught up to me and when i stabbed the left too fast, the entire left side of my canopy collapsed, got a half twist in my lines and reinflated into a dive ( i still had the toggle stabbed). I had dropped 300' by the time i realized what happened and let off the toggle, but my heart dropped even further! No sharp turns under 2,000 is my new rule.

I'm a super newbie, jump #2 I was entering the pattern a touch high. Airplane pilot experience told me a little flare could bleed some altitude with minimal forward movement. It worked, and my instructors didn't have an issue with it, seems like it might be a more stable option.

@@BikerMage Better to go long or wide on the downwind or base leg to lose some altitude. Stalling in the pattern is a no-no. Who is behind you ?

What's the canopy size and model? Looks like it could be a volt..? Either way, the closed-end cells lead me to believe there is an issue with lines on the canopy, and he really needs to open up that chest strap to let the canopy take a better shape. Toggly whipping in the pattern is a problem but the collapse may have been avoided with better equipment??

aggressive toggle turn causes line twist and collapse so sort it out and then make an aggressive toggle turn to land with slider open! Rookie shit mate, cmon ... just get that canopy and yourself safely on the ground!

It looks like he's suffering from a constant cravat. It looks like the A line broke on the far right cell of his glider. Even after he gets out of the twist, I think another cravat occurs. It's also odd that he doesn't address this issue at any point. Maybe the line is present, but has a broken core or is the wrong length. It's very suspicious that the cell is so prone to collapsing and tucking in while the rest of the wing is so well inflated.

Sow as he intentionally trying to do a SAT..? Or is just brand new to skydiving? Yes I see his chute wasn't fully inflated at first, but it fixed itself as soon as he pulled right brake. He pulled that thing down to his hip... Notice it didn't happen again, and he also didn't pull it down to his hip again. Coincidence? That was ENTIRELY pilot error..
