@@kerriethompson2073 how? when someone close to you dies you like to relive their memories by telling fond stories of them. lorelai was just making polite conversation. if she was being rude she would have made a joke or callously changed the subject

The L and R sounds are treated as the same sound in many languages. In others, words transition between the two frequently. So Lorelai -> Lory -> Rory is a pretty obvious childhood nickname.

She's sensitive when it's not related to her family. When the cat dies Lorelei is actually quite sensitive to mory and Babette. But when it's her mother Lorelei decides to be a dick.
