I am talking about earth spinning, but the dark side is not pushing toward the sun; it's pushing toward the direction of earth's orbit around the sun. It's pushing forward while the light side pushes back. So we move faster at night.

Yes, velocity is subjective to one's frame of reference, and there is no such thing as an absolute frame for stillness. Light ignores our rotating frame of reference but sound does not, because sound requires matter to pass through, and if all that matter is going somewhere, then the sound goes too, independent of its movement through that matter. The speed of sound varies a lot based on the density of the medium it's moving through. At sea level: 761 mph At 35,000 ft: 663 mph

If you're on a moving train and shine a light in front of you, it recedes from you at light speed. If someone is standing still next to the train, the light also recedes from them at light speed even though you'd expect it to be faster. This seems impossible, but it is made possible by the fact that time is a subjective experience that warps itself custom to you based on your relative motion.

The Milky Way is not orbiting a central mass like a black hole. Its movement is affected, though, by other galaxies in what's called our "local group". The local group is the set of galaxies that will hang together with us after everything else in the universe fades away in the distance from expansion. The Milky Way and Andromeda are the only large galaxies in this group, and they are approaching each other.

I'll cover this at some point--the location of the big bang is everywhere. Space itself has been uniformly expanding since the big bang, not at the edges, but between any two points you choose. Wherever you are, that's where the big bang happened.

I believe the stock response is that you should imagine that all the possible universes where life could NOT evolve DO exist. They're out there, empty, broken, with nobody in them to even know how unlucky they are. The life that develops in the few places that can sustain it will surely feel very lucky, and maybe they are, but they're also, in this conception, entirely predictable.

The earth is what they call a rotating frame of reference. You'd need to tie yourself to another frame of reference in order to take advantage of the difference. I believe the closest example would be the moon. I don't think we'd use it on a grand scale even if we could undo the rotation effect. You could only travel straight west and your maximum speed (at the equator) is only twice that of a commercial jet. Plus you'd have to deal with going faster than sound. Low earth orbit is 16x faster.

Interesting when you think of it that way. Plus, there's also the thought that you'd have to travel, roughly 17,500 mph to escape the gravity of the earth long enough to escape atmosphere. Imagine thinking on those lines, adding on the galactic speeds listed here.

light is constant-186,000miles per second--I was told gravity perpetuates at the speed of light--if the sun disappeared now- would we stay in gravity and still witness the presence of the sun for 8.3 minutes (the time it takes light to reach earth)? or would we instantly be thrown from orbit ...hope these questions aren't annoying but I was having a discussion with someone else on this topic and Id like to hear another perspective...

This video really makes me think---would you add the velocities of the galaxy speed plus the solar system plus the earths etc...if one rides a jet plane and shines a light those photons don't go any faster than the speed of light weather your on a jet plane or standing still--all this stuff about motion and time is really interesting but kind of difficult to ones mind wrapped around it...at least in my oppinion thanks again!

I have been wondering would there be a way go slower than the earths rotation so that he earth moved beneath some one so they could get from point a to point b?...could this principle be carried over to galactic space travel? could some one slow down within a space so that the solar system or galaxy moves past them..sorta letting the destination come to them...hopefully this doesn't seem like to dumb a question...I admire your rapping skills and creativity thanks for the good videos!

I think we were discussing what passes for now..."now" for me isn't the same as "now" for my identical twin on a 1/2 the speed of light space ship...but "now" at the speed of light is eternal..so everything that has ever happened and ever will is happening simultaneously "now" at the speed of light...which makes me wonder about things like determinism and consciousness, and choice and, any comment on this? thanks for your previous responses! ,glad you got your car back, what a terrible fiasco!

lol--a question came into my mind. How could you be going faster than the speed of sound if you slowed down far less then the rotational speed of the earth? Is velocity a subjective phenomenon only gauged in comparison with another object? I guess light is the only constant, and gravity I have been told also perpetuates at the speed of light...then what is the speed of sound? isn't that constant? or do different conditions effect that? thanks for the response!

Nope. It's in motion though. Heading away from the source of 'the big bang' according to astophysics. I knew that the galaxy our solar system is in is rotating. But I didn't realize that it is rotating around a black hole star called "Sagitarius A star" until I watched this video! Unreal! Maybe I'm just amazed because I learned something on KZbin.

I mean, is everything just put into place and working in perfect harmony? Is it perfection of multiple mechanisms that work together even though they can all destroy eachother? Or is it an anomoly that just everything is perfect and our we just that lucky that nothing has gone really wrong? I guess is it the, damn we're good, or damn we are lucky. On second thought though, both anomoly or perfection ideas end up in, damn we are lucky.

Yes, but collision is a misleading word. It may not be as destructive as it sounds. They could pass through each other. We're approaching at 250,000 mph, and will merge in around 2.5 billion years. Sooner and more threateningly, the earth will be uninhabitable in 1 billion years because the expanding sun will make it too hot. Going to Mars is the most obvious temporary solution if we're still around to have the problem.
