Postscript: When the producers of "Friday the 13th" decided at the last moment to emulate the shock ending of "Carrie", it never occurred to them that they were painting themselves into a corner. The murderer was dead. Her son had died years earlier. There was nothing supernatural about it - just a crazy person killing people and whatever that silliness with "Jason" (who died years earlier, triggering his mother's madness) and the boat was. So how to do a sequel? By assuming Jason didn't die? But then why was his mother nuts? And if he was 'alive' how was he lurking underwater, not breathing? Is he a ghost? How did he know she'd be in the boat? How did he get down there? And while we're at it, why was Crazy Ralph standing in a dark pantry waiting to scare someone? And why was Mrs. Voorhees laying on her back under a bunk before anyone came to make out on it? And how did she clean up the blood so fast? I assume an axe to the head or an arrow through the throat makes a considerable mess. And so on. But if it was on TV I'd probably stop to watch it. After all, it almost Halloween!

The movie was filmed about an hour away from where I live. The town segments were filmed in Blairstown and the camp parts were shot at a Boy Scout camp called Camp NoBeBoSco in Hardwick. The camp is still up and running, and they hold tours and overnight stays for fans of the movie on and around Friday the 13th. I took the tour back in 2020 when the pandemic put a cramp on Spooky Season activities and it was one of the few things I could find to do that hadn't been canceled. I was tempted to do the overnight stay this year, but they were charging nearly $1,000 and I just wasn't up the spending that much cash. Instead, I drove up to Blairstown today and went to the diner seen in the movie. As you might imagine, it was very busy, but I still managed to get a "Slasher Burger" and some fries. Then I went to a screening of the movie this evening. Of course, I had to sit near a guy who kept asking his pal where Jamie Lee Curtis was. 🤦♂️

I think once you see more of these famous horror franchises you realise that the movies often vary in quality and things can change over time, the orginal movies of each are usually the most grounded and each sequel gets crazier in some way. Friday the 13th changes a LOT from this original movie. Also a lot people shit on how final girls act in third acts but its easy to do so as a viewer, in super stressful situations people behave completely different from how they think they will. Great reaction Natalie like always, this film started my horror film fascination and love of the genre! i remember watching this as a young kid for my first taste of horror & it lit a fire inside me. classic as it is tacky it certainly hits some home runs for suspense. a cult classic in 80s horror! there are some fun facts about this movie, the original inspiration was halloween. in 1978, producer and director sean cunningham was looking for a model on which to build a commercially successful film, and he found one in john carpenter’s horror classic halloween. the two films ultimately don’t share much other than very broad slasher tropes, but cunningham says he “was very influenced by the structure of carpenter’s film.” Many of the special effects were “baked” in the camp’s kitchen. Tom savini is now a makeup effects legend thanks, in part, to his work on friday the 13th. and in making the film, he and assistant taso stavrakis actually ended up using the camp to finalize the special makeup effects. according to savini, many of the latex appliances ultimately used to create the film’s gruesome murders were baked in the pizza ovens at the camp where the movie was filmed. Selley winters was the first choice for mrs. voorhees. For the now-iconic role of Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, Cunningham and company went in search of an actress with a recognizable name whose career was nevertheless on the decline, so she could be paid relatively little and the budget could stay low. Cunningham eventually made a list of actresses he was considering, and two-time Oscar winner Shelley Winters was his top choice. In Victor Miller’s original script, the character of Jason was, basically, just a kid who accidentally drowned in Crystal Lake. But financier Philip Scuderi wanted something more, and brought in screenwriter Ron Kurz for some rewrites. One of Kurz’s most important contributions to the film was to transform the tragic boy into the deformed child we see in the final movie. And during filming, the crew was entertained by lou reed. Because the camp was closed during filming, and situated in the deep New Jersey woods, the cast and crew didn’t see much outside interference, but it turned out they had a very famous neighbor: rock star Lou Reed, who owned a farm nearby. Keep up the amazing work.

Sorry for the long comment but I love these movies. 😁

The Jason you know from pop culture with the hockey mask wasn't a thing until Part 3 where he stole the mask from one of his victims. Halloween opened the doors for slashers in the 80's but Friday the 13th blew the doors off the hinges. The first movie spawned 9 sequels, a crossover with Freddy from the Nightmare movies and a remake. plus there a talks of another movie or tv show. There have been countless of slasher movies that has been inspired by F13 too. This movie started the Campsite horror trope which is genius! no adults out there to help you! I know it's not the best of the best franchise when it comes to horror movies, but the F13 franchise is my favorite! It's one of those franchises where the first movie is not the best, but every movie are just so much fun and has their own classic and memorable moments! Definitely worth checking them all out! Also insane how low budget this and Halloween was. They earned millions and were only made for a couple of hundred thousand dollars. I actually don't know why everyone assume Jason uses a chainsaw? I've seen Jason depicted with one countless of times, but can't figure out where it comes from. The only time he uses something similar is in Part 7 but that's a weedwacker xD Fun fact: the "ki ki ki ma ma ma" is taken from when Mrs. Voorhees says "Kill her mommy" in Jason's voice, so it's kinda like in Jaws when the music starts playing when the sharks is nearby.

This movie had an amazing creation story. I believe it was part of a series on Netflix. Jason is in all the sequels and cross-over films.

You HAVE to watch the sequels - part 2, 3 and 4 is almost a trilogyand it's so fun to watch them back to back and see the famous Jason develop as a villain on screen (with part 2 and 4 as contenders for the best movies in the franchise, especially part 2) Then you have part 5, which is a gem of it's own hahaha and then you have the zombie Jason trilogy with part 6, 7 and 8, which shows the most famous Jason, the one people think of when they hear the name. I mean, Friday is not the bad movies some people usually think they are, sure the movies have expendable characters and not the best acting, but Jason is such a simple and interesting slasher villain to watch.

The first Friday the 13th movie has a type of quality and innocence to it that the sequels didn't have
@carlossaraiva8213 Жыл бұрын
I agree. The filmaking/cinematography has a sophistication none of the sequels have.

Interestingly, Crystal Lake, New Jersey, is the size of a large pond and surrounded by houses, with a very limited amount of trees. All that screaming would have woken up everyone in the neighborhood and caused a crowd to form pretty quickly in the camp, even in the storm.

I feel like the need of the breadcrumb from the beginning is a modern trope in storytelling. It's been done to death in both movies and TV (especially crime shows) to the point it gets parodied. A blind reveal like this is honestly refreshing.

Friday the 13th was quickly made after the success of Halloween to try and get some and get some of its success that's why the original has some things pulled straight from the original Halloween like the POV killer shots.

You should definitely continue watching them. Especially for how the series tries (key word: tries) to be serious and then just goes off the rails and never stops. They’re hokey, but always fun to watch.

23:45 - yeah keep in mind that Pamela managed to murder one of the counselors because they were trying to save what they thought was a little boy in danger. Kind of goes against Pamela's reasons

I could easily see her logic being "Oh but you didn't save MY son? Time to die." Regardless of the fact that none of these kids could've possibly done that because they weren't there when he drowned in the first place.

Nat I’m so glad you didn’t get spoiled by scream, I wouldn’t have been able to forget that, I actually watched a different movie that told me about mrs vorhees so I already knew when I watched this film

There really isn’t too much to be spoiled about this movie, or popularly spoilt anyway outside of several details because, even though it kicked off one of the most instantly recognisable franchises in movie history, much of what people know Friday the 13th for happens in the sequels that really made this series iconic.

I forget which one, but in one of the sequels, Jason uses a kitchen knife (signature weapon of Michael Myers) and a fish hook, signature weapon of the killer in I Know What You Did Last Summer. I distinctly remember a moment where a character hears a buzzing noise prior to Jason appearing, and I shot up from my couch saying something to the effect of "No way he's going to use a chainsaw now too, that's Leatherface!" But sadly it was just a buzz saw. SO YOU WERE ALMOST CORRECT, NATALIE xD

I love the video intro please keep it. today is the perfect time to start watching Friday the 13th. I hope you watch halloween series movies. I love old style movies especially horror movies I think that's why I love the newer halloween movies because there isn't anything any about them and they reference older ones with certain scenes.

I have *literally* just finished watching this for the first time! Honestly pleasantly surprised at the twist! I laughed at a lot of bits, and I shook my head at Alice turning down the car because of the body in it (I would've been outta there in that car, but I understand she's in shock), but I'm actually very chuffed that the main bit wasn't spoiled for me!
