Friday the 13th - NES (All Items, Rescue Everyone...With Commentary)

Playing Friday The 13th on my NES with HDMI/Kevtris. This was a really good run, I was able to show off all the tricks. I accomplish all the tasks on the first day so that day 2 and day 3 are only spent fighting Ms. Voorhees and Jason.
Using Mark, I get 9 jars of vitamins, the key, the flashlight, the dagger, the machete, the axe, the torch, the sweater, and the pitchfork. I defeat Ms. Voorhees on all three days and rescue all 15 campers and every counselor. I show off how to get an extra machete, the best route to take to light all the fireplaces, the locations of the notes, and even the secret cabin in the woods. I even talk about the glitch to make Jason invincible.
There's even a little room to talk about Jeff Rovin's book "How To Win At Nintendo Games Volume II", a shout-out to the youtube channel Play With Jason, and some grumbling about recent problems with the Friday The 13th movie franchise.

There are so many interesting mechanics in this game that most casual players are never made aware of. It's too bad the game doesn't really explain these mechanics, because the game is surprisingly deep and compelling. Great video showing a thorough knowledge of this oft maligned classic!

+betterinsodapop Most notably is the ability to change to a different counselor while in a small cabin. This mechanic is absolutely vital, and it isn't explained in the manual. Moreover, it is somewhat unintuitive since there is the "switch" function if two counselors are occupying the same small cabin. It gives the false impression that you must make it to the counselor before you can switch to them.

@@underwaterlevelz1947 Think of how many (video game camp counselor) lives could've been saved if this information was explained clearly in either the game text or the manual. I don't even remember Nintendo Power correctly explaining this mechanic!

This game was so scary. I had to go to therapy as a child. It was terrifying. I never recovered from this game.

Back in 1990, this game definitely had some horror vibes. Jason's unpredictability, his mom's head, and the unsettling music inside the cabin...yeah this game probably frightened many kids back in the day

@@underwaterlevelz1947 Something scary about this game when I was a kid. I used to play it in the dark by myself. I think that's why. The music was creepy and the whole game was dark. I hated when Jason popped out of nowhere.

A nightmare on elm Street was cool too, but not as good as this one. I just didn't like that there was no Freddy. All it was were snake heads and ghosts. The music was scary though. I used to play it on my Nintendo in the 80s all the time. The ending was horrible too.

This was an awesome game though back in the day. My buddies used to spend the night and we'd all get scared playing it in the dark. Nice review though and thanks for uploading it.

@@j.d.contreras392 lol yeah, i played Nightmare on Elm Street on this channel also, I was a bit harsh on my review, said it was a pretty dull platformer. Also played Jaws, which I think is a little bit better but very short.

I think what I've come to appreciate the most over the years is that it gives the player tremendous freedom in how to approach the game. You could play as I did and strategically achieve all the goals on the first day, or you could just simply get the torch and kill Jason quickly all 3 days.

I remember playing the game with my brothers and the Game Genie when we were kids. And we felt good in saving the counselors and the campers and destroying Jason. Pretty weird!

Aweosme job! There's so much going on in Friday the 13th, but it was so poorly explained. I still remember how shocked I was when I found out Jason followed a set route around camp. We're still learning more about the inner workings of the game too, so it's a very exciting time. Knowing how to block Jason on the lake, or exactly when he appears there makes it go from a horrifying place in damageless runs to something really easy! Once you learn how the game works, it's one of the best on the NES, it's just really difficult to figure everything out without a guide

Hm, I know that Jason kinda moves in a somewhat predictable "circuit", which is how speedrunners are able to trail him outside and kill him quickly, but I didnt know Jason could be blocked on the lake. How is that done?

@@underwaterlevelz1947 The speedrun requires a specific seed, so we know where he’s going there, but as soon as he attacks someone for the first time you’ll know where he is on the route and can follow him from there. The lake is really cool! If you force a crow spawn (works best at dusk or night), Jason and zombies can’t appear because they’re blocked by the crow. A crow appears right away at dusk, and after 2 zombies at night. Jason will also show up at 43 and 33 seconds left on the timer, assuming he isn’t blocked by a crow or a zombie, because apparently lake zombies take priority over Jason. Just figured that one out back in July!

This game is not Grand Theft Auto 3 here, no not even close. However, it has amassed an unusual amount of criticism. Yeah, I don't think it's fair. It's not a fair look at this game. it's really not that bad, but it does take a little while to learn. And for all the haters, I guess you're just going to have to deal with it and try to learn the cryptic nature aren't you? yeah, it's not that bad

Neat! I was thinking about doing this one soon, since it has a pretty quick playtime. Mark looks so funny when he jumps (really when any of the characters jump). I actually had 'How to Win at Nintendo Games 2' when I was a kid. I bought it at the book fair at my school lol.

From what I understand, the reason why there have been no films for a long time is because of a long-running lawsuit between original Friday the 13th writers Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller. Recently heard on RedLetterMedia just last month that the lawsuit has been settled and there may be some new Friday the 13th stuff coming to Netflix in the near future. If you're a big Friday the 13th fan, I recommend you check out RedLetterMedia's review of the franchise, they knocked it out of the park.

as long as you can master the "dodge" mechanic fighting jason in cabins and get the torch, thats all you need to beat the game. The rest is purely supplemental.

You're right this game does feel like The Goonies 2. Gamers were more fond of Goonies 2 than Friday the 13th back in the day, but nowadays retro gamers seldomly bring up Goonies 2 while Friday the 13th remains memorable.

A 2D pixel-art remake of this game with some refinement would be incredible, this game had so much potential and it has a lot of great ideas along with it's really nice sprite-art and soundtrack but there's so many aspects of the game that just make it unfriendly to try and beat, let alone 100% lol

If you step outside after killing Jason, he usually fights you outside. This is good because more damahe to him .

Jason takes more damage if you fight him outside, especially with the torch or pitchfork

i know you can pepper him with more hits much faster when fighting outside, but I don't think the actual damage dealt is greater. Speedrunners prefer the outside fighting because of this, but fighting outside is riskier, his attacks are harder to dodge and you can accidently grab a dagger just trying to dodge his attacks.
