wow, looking back you realize how cutting edge this show was, i briefly remember watching it maybe once and thinking it was boring (i think) snl was bombing and television in the early 80's was an endless minefield of mediocrity. you gotta love how friday's constantly pushed the boundries and how often they got away with it.

SCTV wasn't doing too bad, but a lot of people did complain that it wasn't the same without John Candy and Catherine O'Hara (they temporarily left). But you are right about SNL's quality being in the toilet during the early 1980s and TV in general at that time being mediocre (with the exception of this show and SCTV).

Even as a kid, I hated the studio audience's reactions to the sketches. It was too loud and screechy. Saturday Night Live had such aspects of production more effectively controlled.
