I do enjoy hand sewing, especially hand sewing the binding to the back of a quilt. That is the last step in making that quilt and it takes no concentration so I use that time to pray for the person I am giving it to. If it is someone I know, then I can also enjoy the memories I have of them. It's just an enjoyable quiet time that I feel blessed to have.

I'm a quilter, so I always keep an epp project in the car for long car trips. I realize it may take years for that quilt top to be completed, but I enjoy the business of hand sewing and sense of accomplishment. My husband loves that the project keeps my head down, so I am not back seat driving. Win win!

Many times I will hand sew a hem. I find it relaxing as the final part of finishing the garment. I usually do it on the sofa while my husband and I are watching something on TV. But, I did want to mention that I also sewed my bridesmaids dresses. Back in 1974 the 5 girls wore halter gowns with bolero jackets and each one was a different pastel color. How fun is that! Many blessings to you.

I recently found you and started watching regularly. My mother had a needle and thread in my hand when I was 5 years old. By the time I was 8, I did all of her hand finishing. We made a pretty good team. In my teens I took up hand embroidery and now also do hand applique. So hand work is my first love! Also at 5, I witnessed my mother sewing through her finger. It was bad, she was pinned to the machine and we were alone. She had me get the tool box from under the sink and disassembled everything herself. I machine sewed off and on over the years, but really only conquered that fear and accompanying hesitancy in the last few years. Now my love for both work together! I do think hand sewing is usually either a love or hate thing. Great question!

Congradulations on the new machine! I am a Pfaff lover too, looking forward to the unveiling. Handsewing. Love the feel of a needle in my hand. Like kneading bread the physical touch is something very meditative. Unfortunately my hands can no longer tolerate it, that is why God blessed me with a Pfaff creative icon!

I do hand sewing when I'm doing a small repair but I have been super curious about doing a full garment by hand. The only reason I haven't tried it yet is 1) choosing the project and 2) I have cataracts is one eye and seeing well enough to get a straight line is a challenge right now. Maybe after surgery or I could use a Frixion pen to mark my seam allowance so I can see it.

I truly enjoy watching you videos. I have sewn for many years (56) and really enjoy hand sewing. It is so relaxing for me to pick up a needle and thread plus thimble. When I started sewing can’t say I liked it but sure do now. When I’m judging 4-h sewing projects and see hand sewing on the project I alway ask if they like the hand sewing. Love the answers I get. Some are hesitant to give me their true feelings and some say right away their opinion. So fun to hear the answers.

I don’t mind a bit of hand sewing. I was taught, way back in the early 70’s by my grandmother, that a hem should always be hand sewn. I still do a lot of hems by hand but I also will machine hem. We are the same age and to still have our mothers to talk to is a blessing I am thankful for every day. I still have my father and step-father also. A verse I stumbled across again today is from Job (one of my favorite books because I’m odd that way) is: “He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.” Job 8:21 This is a promise I need to remember after many years of trial. I love the promise you shared also.
@TodayinJensSewingRoom Жыл бұрын
I agree about still having our mom being a blessing! Those days are numbered and I know we're both striving to make the most of them. I don't think you're odd at all in having Job as a favorite book. My husband - former pastor - has reminded me for years of the way Job just never let go of God. "Though He slay me, yet I will hope in Him." I think the thing most people don't realise is that for all Job lost, God gave back to him double. It's easy to say faithfulness pays off, but in the end honoring God really is its own reward. Thanks for reminding me of this. ❤️

Jen, I learned how to sew from my grandmother, so hand sewing was something she wanted me to know how to do. my first piece of advice from her was not to start out with a LOOONG piece of thread, because it would become tangled and you would spend time "undoing". She would tell me in Danish, but the English translation is . "Lazy tailors use long threads"

Those skirts are so cute and you look so good in those pants, top & hat. We are scorching with the heat & humidity here in Virginia also. Staying inside except to run errands in air conditioned car. We lost air conditioner a couple years back for about 4 days & boy was that beyond miserable. I’ve got better with hemming by hand but absolutely totally no to hand sewing. Other than stay stitching to keep my seams together I don’t do hand stitching. One of the reasons I don’t hand sew except hems and why I stay stitch is because I severely broke my arm several years back & too much hand sewing & keeping fabric together does cause quite a bit of fatigue & pain. I have to say at first I felt like I wasn’t as good as others because I couldn’t keep my fabric together but then I told myself no sewing is not only to create things but it supposed to be fun & enjoyable too. I also use school house washable glue to keep seams together and magnets.

I look forward to your videos each week as well as Michelle's (@michellesewsagain). You both add so many chuckles to sewing. That is a cherished gift from her. I once bought a new Singer several years ago - an updated version of the one I had, very similar case. Well, I had to work one Saturday and my husband cleaned our living area and organized my sewing area. Unfortunately my new sewing machine ended up at Goodwill along with some fabric scraps and a sack of new material. Last time he was allowed to touch anything to do with sewing or anything belonging to me. . . . . . . As far as hand sewing, I've joined the slow stitching movement and love it. I have even sewed a lap size quilt and looking forward to hand stitching a poncho. I find it relaxing and soothing when watching tv and KZbin videos. Blessings to you for sharing your sewing adventures with us.

Thanks! Well, I just went down a rabbit hole and found that this fabric is a print from Leon Rosenblatt and it's apparently vintage. Info on him is kind of limited though. I'm not even sure he's still alive, and can't find anything current on him or even anything about fabric designs. There is a 3 yard piece of what I think might be curtains on Etsy for $98 - it's listed as fabric but apparently it has a hemmed edge and a couple of stains. Not what I'd pay for a vintage curtain!

What a very, very thoughtful gift from Michelle!!!! I noticed that she used a lot of your favorite colors (or so it appears from this side of the screen). I have S1717 and very happy to see an older pattern being made up. Someday I will give it a try. I've purchased a lot of the current Big 4 patterns during JoAnn's $1.99 pattern sales (McCall's now on sale through Saturday night), but there are so many excellent OOP patterns that need to be brought back to life on YT vlogs, so thank you again for that! Simplicity is finally realizing that they have so many great patterns in their inventory from the 1940's to today that should be made available again. Love the dress on your mannequin. Thank you so much Cathy! You know what, I knew I wanted view C and didn't even realise - all the pieces for that view are there! For some reason there are two sets of back bodices, one for the sleeveless version and one for the views with sleeves. Pretty sure the sleeveless version is cut more narrowly. What I ended up doing was (duh!) figuring out that I wanted view C that was shorter, had the sweetheart neckline and had sleeves - but I didn't want the sleeves. So I used those pieces. Solved the problem although I'm having to narrow the armhole slightly. But it's ok because at least I do have the front bodice for the sleeveless view as a guide. So it's working out after all!
