The scene with Kathy Bates in Saran Wrap was a joke about a marriage advice book from the 70s called The Total Woman that among other things suggested the wife greet her husband wearing nothing but Saran Wrap when he came home.

After Ruth had died, I think Sipsey was covering a mirror. There's old folklore about mirrors capturing the souls of the deceased, so she was probably making sure Ruth's soul would pass on and not get caught in the mirror. I liked hearing your theories at the end about what you thought would happen with Mrs. Threadgoode, when I watched this movie with my mom she always thought that Mrs. Threadgoode was an old Idgie, to the point that when I watched the movies years after and that WASN'T the big reveal, it threw me for a loop.

@@robertdean925 “progressive” in the safest most widely acceptable ways… Hollywood execs aren’t blazing any trails that might threaten their bottom line. I LOVE this movie. I just. My mom and grandma and aunts would watch this movie and cry. Our dad's and uncles and grandpa would be at the big kitchen table, supposedly playing cards (quietest card playing ever) and be watching it. Crying and laughing and crying and laughing. I watch it a few times a year when I need to feel like I'm close to my mom and grandma and aunts who are gone. I miss them. I miss them like a phantom limb sometimes and I wish they were here and I was just a kid, watching movies on the floor after eating the feast my grandma would make for the whole family once a week. I miss that.

You would truly appreciate the book. It's a great story. I should say, when she did the honey and bees thing... As a 7-9yo girl, I went on a picnic in the rural area of town with a family friends daughter (my age). We put our sheets down on a bee hive. I was eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich. My friend ran away but I was almost immediately covered in bees. I got scared for about 30 seconds and then I got really really calm. I accepted that I was probably going to die. It slowed everything down for me. Understand that I had waistline curly dark brown hair (I'm Wasain) and they were in my nose, ears, neckline, eyes. I didn't get a single sting. I walked slowly. I thought slowly. I don't know what it was. I just know that I should have been stung at least a few hundreds of times. But I just got so calm inside and out. I moved slowly. It took me an hour to get back to their house. They didn't even know that I was possibly dead...cuz she was so afraid to tell about what happened. Plus her dad & grandfather were out hunting to train their dog pack. They came in literally as I was finishing shaking out my hair and clothes in front of their house. No bees left. I never trusted her again nor was I close to her ever again. Actually, I never fully trusted any friends after that.

Thanks for this reaction to one of my favorite movies and books. The book has so much more of the story of the town and the townspeople, especially Big George and his family. Grady was definitely not a klan member. They found Frank’s truck because the river dried up in a drought so excellent call on that one. The reverend covered for Idgie (Imogene) because she had done his family a huge solid. She was wild, but she cared about people. Kathy Bates made this movie AFTER Misery, so when she tells Ninny she doesn’t look like a blob from a monster movie I’ve always thought that was her inside joke.

It takes place in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Which is a fictional place inspired by the town of Irondale Alabama. I live about 20mins from it. They even have a Whisle Stop Cafe there now that people from out of town will stop at while visiting or driving through Alabama. The bee scene always reminds me of my grandaddy because he showed me how they would rub their hand in their sweaty armpits and stick their hand in a hive to get honeycomb. The bees wouldn't sting them at all. "When he reads he uses his finger" 😂😂😂 I'm saving that one for future use.

in my culture if one loses a leg, an arm, an eye or an organ, we bury that with a family ceremony so folks know where it is, then when we pass away our family retrieve and bury us in tact so we are whole again. When i first saw this movie i laughed and laughed when it was revealed buddy jr had a funeral for his arm as it's pretty normalised here lol loved your reaction, love this film, it was much queerer in the books but 90s movie execs though making Idgy and Ruth lovers would put off audiences. the food fight scene was put in by the director to act as the love scene. Glad you loved it too, 'secrets in the sauce' as they say:)

Drives me crazy when people don't get that this is a LOVE story. It just had to be done mostly in subtext for the 1991 mass audience. I HATE the food fight cliche. Such a tired-ass trope.

Couldn't watch directly this time as I was busy moving countries (Ireland to Spain). My luggage didn't make it BUT my sweet fur babies did. They are busy now exploring our new home and I finally get to relax. And how better to relax than by having some snacks and watching you watch a movie 😊

Kathy Bates is great in DOLORES CLAIBORNE. I hope you'll consider watching it, if you haven't already. Your commentary is hilarious.... as usual.

Agreed. Dolores Claiborne is a must see. It's Kathy Bates favorite career performance. The film truly is Stephen King's lost gem. It doesn't get the attention and respect that it deserves. The film is a masterpiece. I hope Jay will watch it soon. I love his reactions, they are so genuine.

Since you liked Jessica Tandy so much in this I strongly encourage you to see her in her Oscar winning performance in "Driving Miss Daisy" costarring Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd. I guarantee you'll love it.

I had a huge crush on Mary Stuart Masterson when she was in Some kind of Wonderful. Definitely gave Lea Thompson a run for her money in that movie.

Yesss! Thank you so much for reacting to this ❤️ Also, this is the first time I’ve been able to watch it, or I guess part of it, without crying, lol. So I suppose I should probably thank you for that too! 😂 This movie will never get old. I’ve loved it since I first saw it as a child, probably didn’t understand half of it back then, but nevertheless it’s always been in my top 3 of all time.

My favorite part in the first act is when young Idgy says, “What if God made a mistake.” And her brother is the only one who understands her, accepts her completely, and loves who for the pearl that she really is. Can you imagine being a queer child in the 30s in the SOUTH? It helps us understand why her entire life caved in when Buddy died. Of course her family loved her, but only Buddy and Ruth truly knew her.

Kathy Bates is such a great actress. She's in so many great movies and has such a wide range it's incredible One of the best actresses out there.

Mary Louise Parker (Ruth) is in another extraordinary movie called "The Client"...based on a book by John Grisham. Hope it makes the polls! My son used to cut green Roma tomatoes into wedges and fry them up...man they were good!

"Secret's in the sauce." Casual cannibalism is super casual. 😳 Fun Fact: Theatrical directorial debut of Jon Avnet. Action Star Fact: Mary Stuart Masterson did all of the bee stunts herself because her stunt double quit at the last minute. Name Tags Fact: Director Jon Avnet referred to Mary-Louise Parker as "Lou" and Mary Stuart Masterson as "Stu" on the set because their names are so similar and he had to say them so often. Location Location Fact: There really is a Whistle Stop Cafe that does indeed serve fried green tomatoes (among other Southern foods) just north of Macon, Georgia. It is in the actual area where many of the scenes were filmed. After the film became a huge success, the Whistle Stop Cafe set was turned into an actual restaurant, and its surrounding area into a tourist attraction. Although they may have filmed in Georgia, the true Whistle Stop Cafe is in Irondale, Alabama (a suburb or Birmingham, where Author Fannie Flagg grew up). Locomotive Enthusiast Fact: The steam locomotive used in the film is Atlanta & West Point 290, a 4-6-2 Pacific, built by the Lima Locomotive Works, Lima, Ohio, in 1926, one of two of the class, which operated until 1954, hauling the Crescent passenger train between Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama. Upon retirement, it was preserved and initially placed on static display. In 1961 it was donated to the Atlanta Chapter, National Railway Historical Society. Restored to operation in the 1980s, it hauled excursions on the New Georgia Railway around and out of Atlanta. As of 2017, it is currently waiting for a cosmetic restoration at the Southeastern Railway Museum, Duluth, Georgia.

12:58 I work with all kids of animals in my job, including bugs. Honey bees don't really want to sting you, but if one does the rest might too just because the first one did. I'd call what she did mostly safe, but kinda dangerous. Also yes Idgie likes her likes her. It's more obvious in the book.
