3:12 Let's flip through the cards and check out the art... 11 of diamonds, neat, look at that chap, solders as pips, 9 of hearts, 7 of spades, 7 of clubs...13 of clubs- bloody hell! what a homely mug on this one. Good God, oh, Lizzie be grateful you were born into nobility.

Friedrich is unique and has simple and easy rules but heavy strategy.If you like Friedrich then you fell in love with Maria inevitably.

Thanks for posting. First, props to the designer Richard Sivel. I think it’s nice to name check the game designer where appropriate. Sivel is interesting, since publishing Fred in 2004, then Maria, he has only produced Wir Sind der Volk, another quirky offering about Cold War workers. I would like to see anything new he produced. I love Friedrich though I can rarely assemble a table of willing players. I actually like the board too but I agree with you about the counters and cubes. And I like Cribbage.

We have both Maria and Wir Sind Dad Volk (and the 2+2 expansion). I don’t really pay attention to who designed what as I’m crap with names and I can’t remember what I had for breakfast let alone what a bunch of Germans are called.

Top notch review, as usual. Do you own Maria? If so, what reasons would you have for getting this game on the table instead of Maria? Player count? Or, does this game feel like it's offering something considerably different with its one versus many format?
@BoardGameBollocks3 жыл бұрын
Yea player count as Friedrich does 4 rather that 3, but also it’s a lot simpler so it’s there if you’re playing with people who might struggle with the political system in Maria. Let’s face it, the trigger events in Maria are pretty confusing if you’re not used to more complex games.

Some people say this is the best historic Board game ever made!

Could be. Maria is pretty close though

Was looking into both Maria and Friedrich; Would you recommend one over the other and are they different enough that they're both worth owning? Judging by the "deluxe expansion", it seems like you can get rid of the spread sheet by sticking a few bits of wood under a matchbox to represent the army count.

Maria is a more complex version of Friedrich. I play Friedrich with 4 and Maria with 3. See how you like Friedrich and if you play it enough and want a bit more tacked on go for Maria. It’s 3 players only mind.

It is worth it. I attend the Madrid 2 year Friedrich tournament (CAFE) in Madrid where I am. I think there's a Friedrich tournament in York also and a big one in Germany. There's an online free game of this, but you have to look for 3 other players online / look for a game obviously.

I’m not an expert on this game but every time it comes out I get sucked in. I’m not sure whether I like the simplicity of this or the added complexity of Maria…what you reckon.

@@BoardGameBollocks Maria I own but haven't played but I know that there's negotiating in it. I prefer the raw mechanics and the cruelness of the cards of Friedrich rather than negotiating. You can still indirectly / partially help other players who are not playing Prussia as part of your big strategy though in Friedrich whether it be to attempt to gain cards of a certain type or deplete friedrich's cards of a certain type or to lure Friedrich away from you to another player etc

never heard of this game before, but very interested in the theme

There’s a ‘sequel’ called Maria which has a political system bolted on and is strictly 3 players only. Quite unique.

I like Friedrich, but its to long so I dont get to play it more then every other year... I would like a game using this mechanic that takes 120min

This is so true…I know only 3 others who will play it.
