Of the drought era, this episode ranks among the best easily. A thorough explanation of Mr. Krabs and Plankton’s history, that never gets tampered with. SpongeBob is a king of inconsistency in these later seasons, but this was and still is the canon backstory. “Mr. Krabs is greedy, but he doesn’t have that evil laugh to him.” Oh boy…you’re almost right.

I didn't remember "Friend or Foe" was the first episode in season 5, probably the best first episode in that matter. It proves that even if post-movie seasons have mediocre and atrocious episodes, they had time to tell such gems of stories. Even though it's been 14 seasons already with 15'th coming up very soon Krabs and Plankton should've just put their pride aside, become partners and show the world who has the best restaurant. Like, Plankton is not truly evil even considering what he did in the first movie, definitely has much more kindness than Bubble Bass and Squilliam. Krabs,at least really misses his best friend and wants to start all over. It's great that backstory was grounded, not some crazy adventures but just relatable dream of starting business. And it's cool both Krabs and Plankton are from poor families trying to be something more. Personally, it's perhaps the best special in the show ever. Oh, and it's always nice to see Patchy, he's just as innocent friendly dreamer as SpongeBob
