Feeding them keeps them healthy and out of trash cans thus reducing the chance of disease and unwanted encounter with pets and children. They're actually quite intelligent and social. They've been relying on me as a food source for many years and boy are they healthy!!! Never one single problem with them!

I have a fox who lives in the graveyard round the corner, one of many I suspect "subletting" in the broken graves. He /she comes through the hedge back of my house and I leave scraps when I can. Lovely to see him in the small hours enjoying a meal. I wouldn't try to get too friendly as my dog doesn't like other animals. They were here before us so we should give them some space.

Beautiful garden and what a wonderful life you have created for yourself and your visiting friends. The distinction of human and non-human animals is arbitrary and to make too much of it is a by-product of hubris. Feed those in need if you are fortunate enough to have extra food.

It has been about 5 years since this video was posted. It is great to know that people like you take the time to understand the unbalanced world between the made environment and the natural environment. Animals such as Lilly wouldn't live too long, as you've mentioned, without decent food and depending only on earthworms. I hope Lilly is still alive and well, and visiting often : )

I love four things about this video: 1) I love that you took the time to feed her by hand, instead of just putting a bowl of food out. This way she knows where the actual food is coming from =] 2) I love her name! So cute ^-^ And I think it suits her well. 3) I love your garden! So lush and alive! :D It's obvious you have a love for nature! 4) The description is long and explains everything =]

Well fed urban foxes have no need to raid bins or dig up lawns for worms, I learned this when I moved to my current house, since then, like you, I have made many new friends in the fox comunity, I find it very rewarding to look out the window and see a little fox waiting for me to go out with some food, keep up the good work.

I've been feeding my neighborhood foxes for many years. Some stay year after year while their young tend to move out of the immediate area. I've never attempted hand feeding mostly because of my dogs. They have established an unseen barrier across which none of the foxes want to cross so we remain friends at a distance.

It started with one, he named 'R Fella' cuz he wasn't sure if it was a boy or a girl, then one day R Fella brought her two cubs to show him what he'd been feeding while she was pregnant. They are our little fox family and another young fox, probably from a previous litter of hers. We love them.

@FGP02 I think it signs your comment when I say that when i went to London last year in May I saw one in the morning straight out of our house! And I only was there for one single week. Neither shy nor aggressive, he just sat there and watched us and hackled (I guess he smelled our sandwiches.) Then after a while he went away. Without any hurry. So adorable!
@SuperMarioZombies12 жыл бұрын
wild squirrels and birds seeem to do fine when fed so I dont see what the big deal is feeding a fox. It's not like a bear that can kill you. i can see maybe getting hit be a car but that can happen fed or not. i can see maybe a fox getting lazy and not hunting or scavenging at all because somebody is feeding it but I doubt it will die. as soon as the food source is gone they will revert back to what they were doing before.

That is pretty amazing. It's sad that they have to scavenge for food, but its also good to know that you're helping out an animal in need. I'm sure what you're feeding it will provide more nutrients alone than just them eating earth worms. You've probably improved that fox's life by a landslide. I'm sure if she could say thank you, she would.

This is really great, I'm so glad you feed these creatures. My mom feeds raccoons which at first I didn't agree with until I found out how many die in urban areas from starvation. The woods areas near my mom's house keeps dwindling so where are they supposed to go? The fox kind of reminds me of a feral cat. If I had foxes in my backyard, I wouldn't even get pets! My life would revolve around the foxes!

Ah! How adorable to witness a scene like that! And though S/He's not a pet, it seems very gentle when taking the food from your fingers. Even house pets sometimes have trouble being gentle when taking food from their feeders fingers. but still, that's amazing. I wish I would have an experience like that! Foxes are amongst one of my few favorite animals. When did S/He start allowing you to feed it? By hand I mean. Even if she was jumpy towards the end.

I remember one time at the local church there was a fox and 3 little cubs living in the drainage pipes under the play ground. The Youth group would place little water dishes just inside the playground's fence and sometimes someone would leave a little dish of peanut butter or something as well. Far as we know they all made it and are off doing some mischievous fox stuff ^^

@cmdrbluegill I think you must be peculiarly well placed for foxes, then. I have lived in areas all over the continental US - the East Coast, the West Coast, the South, the Southwest, the Midwest, and the Northern Plains. And, as I mentioned above, have only seen foxes once. I think your experience is rather the exception than the norm. Perhaps I'll try to put central MA on my next travel itinerary. I would love to see more of them. You are a very fortunate man. Take care.

While I would probably want to do the same, I always worry that one day their lack of fear for humans would bring the little guy into contact with someone who isn't so nice and would hurt or kill him. In this case, kindness is a double edged sword.

One small thing, there are squirrels and rats in cities like London, especially in the parks. In some of the suburbs like Richmond, I saw rats scampering round the parks pretty often, and there were plenty of foxes too so I suspect they had a handsome pick of live prey. Most of them just ate out of the skips behind my uni, though.

Just checked on the net, as I had not heard of it, The last human death from indigenous caught rabies was in 1902.The last reported animal was in 1922. You are right, there was a death in 2002, contacted by a bat conservation worker, after handling a European species of bat. Nothing reported since. The main concern in the UK now are badgers carrying TB, and passing it on to cows. They are undecided what to do about it at the moment

Here in Colorado the diet of foxes in the cities is diverse - like the urban coyote. They eat mice, rats, the occasional prairie dog, the occasional baby bird fallen from the nest - and garbage from human garbage cans. In that they compete with skunks, coyotes and other animals.
