For me thats a yes and no, i mean, whareva the reason he had he was still a bully who bullied Eric for years ( that he dated him despite that was already quite bull for me but ok), but taking that out, and the fact that he chose to be with him, it must be frustating to be with someone that doesnt acknowlage you, when you yourself worked so hard to be where you are, but yeah, Adam stole this season, he was freaking amazing, even his father.
@ellabiddy47413 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I felt bad for him and mad at Eric but at the same time I think there’s so many shows, book, movies, etc where “the only 2 gay people in the school get together and stay together because we don’t care to expand upon their romance” kinda vibe and I’d like to see them meet other people. Hopefully they don’t just recycle Raheem to be ‘the other gay’ and have Adam date him.
@TheCrazyFreak3 жыл бұрын
@@ellabiddy4741 Sorry, but I never understood this argument of "why are they putting the 2 queer people together?" Who are they going to put a gay guy with? A straight one? The only other two alternatives are them not dating anyone (which becomes very hypocritical when a show has plenty of straight couples; to have _them_ have romantic subplots but not the queer characters is kind of homophobic) or the show bringing in a new queer character, which poses a different set of problems: 1. that character often just becomes "the boyfriend" and doesn't have a story of their own besides being there solely to be the other person's partner (in fact, this was kind of the problem with Rahim a lot - in s2 he was just there to be Eric's boyfriend and this season he was also only there to cause tension between Adam and Eric, and then to be Adam's friend) and/or 2. when there's already a lot of characters on a show (which is the case for Sex Ed), it adds yet _another_ person to an already big cast (and everyone's stories suffer for it due to less screentime). It's not strange at all for the only two openly gay people to fall for each other and get together at some point. Besides, I don't even think Sex Ed is too guilty of this anyway. At the start of the series the only two gay guys that we knew of were Eric and Anwar, but the show _never_ has them get together. They brought Rahim onto the show for the sole purpose of being Eric's boyfriend in s2. Yes, Eric was also with Adam (the other major queer guy on the show) but why are straight main characters allowed to get together and not gay ones because then it's somehow "problematic and cliche?" If they do it organically and they do it well, I wouldn't mind Adam and Rahim getting together at some point next season. I like the semi-friendship they've formed and if they continue building on it and it develops into something more then that's fine. The other alternative is keeping them single or getting Adam together with a girl (everyone seems to forget this, but he's actually bisexual). But frankly, I don't want to see the queer characters be single while having so many straight couples be together. What kind of a message does that send?

What bothers me most about Eric's infidelity is that he CHOSE to be with Adam over Rahim, a man he 100% knew wasn't fully out or confident in his bisexuality because of years of internalised homophobia and then freaking cheats on Adam because of that. Also how unbothered he seemed to be over the whole thing. I think he's hilarious and a good friend to Otis, but I'm really hoping they will bring up Eric's behaviour and serial infidelity next season, or at least make him reflect on it.

i kind of realize there is one thing the show tries to stablish in S3, and is that people are not supposed to teach their partner how to be in a gay relationship, or bisexual, non-binary, etc. The thing is i kinda understand Eric's character. I get that cheat on people is not rly a good thing, but that doesn't mean he is a bad person. Cheat on people is not always a capricho (dont know how to say that in eng xd), sometimes is a syntom that you're looking for something else, and that precisly what Eric does this season, he wants to go out, put his make up, be what he wanted to be without hiding of his mother in law pretending he's not doing what he want to do. Maybe I just didn't pick up on it, but it really didn't seem like Adam was holding Eric back. Yeah, I wish we got some kind of backstory for that. The potential was there! The point of Maece's arc is that it IS repetitive! The writers are trying to show the cycle of poverty and being the child of an addict. Every. Single. Time. Maeve trusts someone, she is let down. Her mum, her brother, Otis, Hope, Isaac... Her tenacity is amazing, but she doesn't get a break. She has to become totally vulnerable and trust someone every time she is betrayed - look at how hard it was for her to believe that Anna wants to help her in Season 3. Maeve's arc is repetitive because her life is cyclical.

This is a very good point. Maeve's arc is healing, opening up, trusting people, but that's journey it's not always, probably almost never linear, you're gonna have drawbacks along the way and just because she learned to trust Otis in the first season doesn't mean she's just gonna be open and trusting with everyone right from the bat. I also don't think her reply to Isac was out of character, it was probably just a coping mechanism to protect herself
@savannahhartje44902 жыл бұрын
I disagree about Maeve. One of my favorite things about the show is how realistic it is. Coming from a child of an addict, it is a cyclical issue. They come back, try to be better, eventually fall back into old habits and leave again. To love someone experiencing addiction is to learn the same lesson over and over. Her trust issues come from not havi g stable parents. It makes sense that she would continue to relapse back into those insecurities. However I did think the scene with Isaac was bullshit. It makes no sense that she would be mad at Otis and not Isaac. I also didn't like how she was in the background this season. There was a lot to explore with the foster situation and her mom relapsing.

I was really disappointed with Eric as well. Cheating on his second boyfriend, really ? Dumping Adam because he's not gay enough, when Eric just knew from the beginning that it was going to be difficult, *really* ? It just seemed so un-Eric-like to criticise Adam for not being fully out of the closet - did he not see where Adam was originally coming from ?! When they were together, I was sincerely surprised at how gay Adam allowed himself to be. I get both sides. Eric doesn't HAVE to be held back because he's at a different stage in his sexuality discovery. He's blossoming while Adam is just starting to sprout. However, having that discovery come from a cheating plot sort of cheapens it to me. Eric could have done it like hey Adam, we're at different places and right now I need to be a free flying gay man out and proud, and I know you're not there yet so let's break up amicably. Eric deserved more than his arc being infidelity. While I wish he understood Adam better, I also know it's not his responsibility to hold himself back until Adam is more comfortable. Either way I hope they both grow from it. I'm sort of liking this starting with Adam and Rahim. Rahim isn't as flamboyant as Eric is and I think he might be at a good, comfortable level for someone like Adam whose still exploring himself, while not feeling like Adam would be holding him back the way Eric is.

Can we talk about how the show used Cal as an excuse to completely forget Jackson’s self harm in the last season? Like dude was suicidal you can’t recover from smth like that in one summer and they never mentioned it again ever
@slumpie-o3c3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go as far as to say he was suicidal (although it definetly had the potential to get to that point). He used self harm as a way to escape the constant pressure he was under from his parents, swimming, school ...etc and by the end of the 2nd season we see him trying to discover himself and what he enjoys doing. I do agree though that they kind of forgot about that entire arc and Jackson was just linked to Cal for the entire season and didn't contribute to the season in any other way. Like he mentions going to therapy at the end of season 2, they could have done alot by diving into those therapy sessions and properly addressing his self harm as well as dealing with his anxiety and finding his purpose.

the main reason this season felt weird: the main three were no longer the main three and had essentially zero scenes together. Maeve, Otis and Eric with the clinic were the entire plot in the first season. And it's gone now, so the show has to focus on other things. and when you get rid of the main thing that ties the main character together it gets really hard to keep that momentum going.

@nicomar35063 жыл бұрын
I get what you’re saying but I’m also seeing people say they ship Ruby and Otis so much when they were toxic together from the beginning. Sure they’re relationship can evolve from just being about sex to actually dating, but Ruby basically treated Otis like her dog and I feel apart from a few scenes she doesn’t get that much character development that shows us who she is really. And Otis is just a self centered asshole who thinks about himself most the time(and yes I know they’re teens and they can grow). But yeah, I wish she would’ve gotten more development after she got rejected by Otis.
@pgwrks41493 жыл бұрын
I agree. ROTIS (which sounds stupid but I got it from Mimi Keene) stole the whole damn show and was the highlight of the season. And when Otis broke up with her, the second half of the season wasn't as enjoyable. As far as their relationship seeming a bit toxic, what I got from FSN's video was that Otis understood her defense mechanisms and underneath her superiority complex was just a misunderstood person. He even challenged her beliefs by refusing to dress the way she wanted later in their relationship. He was good for her. But nonetheless, she should've gotten some kind of self-discovery arc w/o a boy involved and the writers totally missed that opportunity and tossed her aside. So yeah, TEAM RUBY.

100% this! Not only does he get no consequences for his shitty behaviour he gets rewarded with a (sort of) relationship with Maeve he totally doesn't deserve, which is deeply problematic and extremely unconvincing. Maeve seems more bothered by Otis drunkenly calling her out for being selfish than she is by Isaac being creepy, possessive and massively invasive, betraying her privacy and interfering to stop a crucial romantic opportunity from occurring with the boy she's in love with. And we're supposed to believe she just gets over it and that neither she nor Otis would go and talk to each other all summer? That she wouldn't see she had a missed call from him on her phone? That she would not only forgive Isaac but decide to shag him and get romantically involved with him? And then he has the audacity to act all hurt when the kiss finally happens between her and Otis, which should have happened several months earlier and would have done had he not deliberately gotten in the way? Fuck off. They made Isaac way too unlikeable imho, the guy has no redeeming personality traits, he's just consistently a giant asshole throughout the entire series and a hugely problematic character and it gets totally glossed over.

I think the writers were going for a conversation about cheating and cheaters. Seems like they are lining it up to be talked about more in S4 seeing as they haven't really tapped on that properly in a show about relationships. Like a "trying to understand cheaters, rather than villanising them" narrative. Which I would kind of like, not that cheating on someone is ever okay, but rather then demonising them like is done in literally every other show ever, we start to get a better idea of what might lead them to do it. @@anna_banana7019 we kind of got that tho. The overall theme had a lot about how our partners aren't in our lives to hold our hands through sorting out our trauma and identity. As painful as it may be, understanding that and embracing it is the only way to move forward, even if we still care and love the person. As much as I felt for Adam, Eric doesn't owe him anything. The relationship was intimately pretty harmful to him and the kiss in Nigeria helped him see that relationships shouldn't feel so difficult. I assume it was the first time he felt like himself in a long time. I adore Adam, but he hardcore bullied Eric for years, and Eric not only forgave him but did a lot to help him with his identity and their relationship. and I hope Adam can have a relationship with someone who is at a similar point in their development so they can lift eachother. They both deserve better. And personally I'm not into calling him a cheater, it sounds like he spent months hiding around doing shit behind Adams back. Far from the best way of sorting things out but it's really not the same as having an affair or making out with other dudes on the regular.

I honestly think they misused Hope as a character - I thought they made her, especially at the end, into a cartoon evil villain (like locking Cal in a cupboard). It feels like they tried to tackle a lot of issues in this season, maybe more than comfortably fits in the runtime; and maybe because they weren’t sure if this was gona be the last season and wanted to cover as many issues as possible while give it a relatively good ending. But I definitely don’t think Cal’s story was pointless. Just because a relationship doesn’t work out doesn’t mean the interaction wasn’t pointless or nothing was learned from it. As a non-binary person seeing Cal’s story was absolutely massive and confirming for me and I feel represented. Relationships are confusing, how we relate to our bodies is confusing and therefore how we let others relate to our bodies is confusing. This part was so important: JACKSON: But I’m open, like I’m willing to learn. CAL: Here’s the thing. I’m still figuring out so much shit about myself. I can’t carry you too. And I still wana have fun when I can, because I feel so heavy all the time. JACKSON: I do really like you. CAL: I really like you too. I’m sorry that this isn’t gonna work out. ... Because I feel so heavy all the time. I can’t carry you too. So that’s why this isn’t going to work out. That’s a very valid and common experience for NB’s. It’s too much to try to teach someone else about how we experience the world, especially when half the time we haven’t a clue what’s going on within ourselves, having a queer partner makes all the difference because they already get it. That storyline was FAR from pointless. If you’re NB you’d get it too. I’m looking forward to seeing how Cal’s character develops in the next season.

But that still wasn't around for long. Or at least there wasn't enough of it for my liking. For a majority of the season, we either saw Ola being a nuisance to Otis/Jean in their own home or joined at the hip with Lily. She didn't really have a "story". They could have done more with Ola and Adam and hopefully they will have more of them in Season 4. Regarding past dynamics in general, we got that beautiful episode where the girls are "Breakfast Clubbed" together and then travel with Aimee on the bus the next day after bonding over their experiences of harassment and assault (which feels a bit weird to write...), but then that disappears. Unless I'm mistaken, pretty much none of those girls besides Maeve have any interaction with Aimee again after that, even Olivia who was once in a "squad" with Aimee and who you'd think would maybe try and break out of The Untouchables a little after that to open up to the other girls a bit more. But they basically all go their separate ways. About Maeve's repetitive storyline: I actually think that's quite realistic. People who have internalised a certain self-image and defense mechanism don't usually find it easy to let go of it. It's normal to fall back to it. Especially with trust issues it's so easy to feel let down and go back to thinking you can't trust people. I definitely understand Maeve not trusting Otis - even if it's true that for big issues he's going to be there, he has been unreliable in other ways. It's clear though that Maeve trusts Aimee. When Maeve says "I don't trust anyone", she has just been let down by someone she really trusted, and even loved, so that ingrained distrust flares up. I can totally buy that in that moment she may believe that, even if that's not true (just an inaccurate self-image). Or she could say it just to make a point, or because the "abandoned kid" side of her comes up more with Isaac, since that's something they share. Growth is not always linear, people's self-images are often inaccurate, and their personalities are not fully consistent every minute of every day. I guess whether it makes for compelling television is another question. For me, personally, it is. About Eric: even though I find him a really fun and charismatic character, I've always thought he wasn't a particularly good friend. Whenever Otis tells him about something that has happened to him that he feels insecure about, Eric's reaction is to laugh at him, not to support him or make him feel good about having shared with him. He also cannot keep a secret and always screams sensitive information at the top of his lungs. Honestly, I wouldn't tell him anything I didn't want the rest of the world to know. Totally agree about Adam becoming a great character, about the fact that they ended Otis and Ruby's relationship way too abruptly, and about being let down by Eric's cheating and general behaviour.

Strongly agree with the Eric part omg, I always found him kinda annoying, not because of his loud personality per se but because he just seems to never be able to tone it down for two seconds. It's almost as if "being true to himself" held more importance to him than being a good friend. Ever since season one I so many times found myself thinking "why is he laughing at something that's clearly making Otis uncomfortable, like, actually bad/self-conscious" or "why is he (LITERALLY) screaming the thing Otis just told him, if he's clearly wanting it to stay between them."

As someone who just recently came out, the Eric/Adam break up really didn’t sit well with me. The narrative essentially supported Eric cheating because he was further ahead in his coming out story than Adam and it’s framed as this huge liberating thing for Eric instead of acknowledging that was he did was wrong and hurt Adam. Instead the show almost gaslights us into believing that the break up is Adam’s fault because he’s still learning and coming to terms with himself - which is a HORRIFYING thing to be pushing on young LGBT people - the idea that you’re only entitled to LGBT relationships and spaces once you’re fully comfortable with yourself. I was really upset with how they handled Adam and Eric’s relationship and to me felt like a gay relationship viewed through the heterosexual gaze.

I was also originally very excited for Eric meeting Oba and going to the club because I was like "awesome, Eric will get to see how proud and comfortable others are in the intersection of their culture and sexuality and it will be liberating and beautiful" that part is great, but the cheating was completely unnecessary. He could have gone to the club and had the same development from the experience without cheating. Also, how old is Oba because he seems a lot older, like at least 20-25. Also yes, big agree about Adam. Eric would be patient and understanding enough to fall in love with someone who bullied him for years, but then turn around and decide that he's actually not patient enough to date someone who is still struggling with internalized homophobia (which is frankly most of the queer community to some degree). Also Adam developed shockingly fast. He was able to decide quite quickly that he wanted to bottom, which is often a difficult topic for people with internalized homophobia, and he was happy and comfortable wearing makeup and standing up for himself in the locker room, etc. Yes, there were still some things he needed to get past, but everybody has struggles that they need to work through, and if Eric was not willing to be a good partner during that, then frankly he shouldn't be in a relationship at all.

I disagree that the show blames Adam for Eric’s infidelity. What you need to remember is that Eric is 17 years old and, whilst he’s further along in his acceptance and understanding of himself as a young gay man, that doesn’t mean he truly knows what he wants. He’s definitely in the wrong, and Adam is completely the victim, but I don’t think the show glorifies his decision; it just seems like a representation of what it’s like to feel enamoured with someone, only to find something else that you didn’t know you wanted and make a bad decision based on that. The show is about growing up, warts and all, and Eric realising that he’s not as ready to help Adam along with his journey as he originally thought he was is understandable for a 17 year old. Of course, the cheating was unacceptable, but we all do things we’re not proud of, especially when we’re young. Adam is the best and I hope we get to see him continue to learn to understand himself. Obviously if you disagree with anything I’ve said, that’s fair enough and I wish you all the best 😊

So even after he made his intentions clear about not being in love with her yet, he comes to talk with her about it, but signals that he would like a quickie or something with her, to which she dismisses him immediately. Their relationship looks good from afar, but if carefully inspected, Otis was probably looking to "get some" from Ruby, and then covered up with some affection (he is a good person after all). And I like how he stopped doing clinic and became apathetic and realized it at the end. BUT it feels that this whole inner conflict which should have been a main focus of the season was shoved at the end and didn’t have a proper development. I hated the whole storyline with Maeve getting pissed at Aimee for paying for her trip. It felt so out-of-character. Obviously I know it can be embarrassing to be "the poor friend," especially if your best friend is rich... which is exactly why Aimee paid anonymously. When she reveals this to Maeve and Maeve gives her the whole, "You don't understand! We come from 2 different worlds!" Like, what?? Aimee DOES understand that, which is why she freaking paid for you! Again, it was one of those moments where Maeve seemed to randomly regress to her early season 1 character. And in the end, I think they did it just to set up the contrived Otis-and-Maeve-both-get-left-behind storyline (which was seriously right out of an '80s family sitcom, my god). They had to have SOME reason for Aimee not to notice Maeve was gone.

You can't treat sex and reproduction the same way you treat your career. Her refusal to give up on IVF against doctor's recommendations is her trying to bully her own body - something with its own 'consciousness', for lack of a better word - into doing what she wants it to, the same way she bullies Cal and the other non-binary student to conform, for example.

Kinda disagree. Eric's mother was fully accepting his sexuality and his father was fine with it, but had issues with how he expressed it. The breakup makes complete sense. Eric found himself wanting to be more free-spirited and even more expressive with his sexuality. Adam is in the early stages, and Eric simply notices (about himself) that he is looking for something else. His relationship with Rahim was very different and imo not really based on love. He clearly had Adam in the back of his mind most of the time and they were both very different. The religious stuff was just another flag for Eric imo. And yes, he breaks up with Adam for similar struggles, but Eric seems to be at a different stage of his personal journey. Is it selfish and not very sensible? 100%. But people seem to forget that the show is about 17 year old kids. So their decisions can be very emotional, naive and selfish.

I think this season should've ended with Otis/Ruby and Maeve/Isaac together, but also a restored friendship between Otis and Maeve. That's really the ONLY way it could feel realistic to me. Let them have actual developed relationships first. Because as it stands, their feelings for each other aren't anything special or different than what they had with Ruby and Isaac. Ruby is a "scary" girl who is out of Otis' league, whom he slowly gets to let her guard down and be vulnerable with him, while also growing close physically. I did a brief stint as a teacher at a private school which had a new principal that year and Hope was spot on. Everything from the speech she gives in the first episode to trying to come off more approachable by not have an imposing desk in her office to the arbitrary rules that only serve to increase control over students and teachers was so accurate. Truly my favorite part of the season.

To be fair, with Jackson, you don't get over an anxiety disorder. You will always have it on some level. I agree Cal and Jackson were boring and did nothing but smoke weed and flirt with if they were going to act on their attraction, but we never see what they actually like about each other except a very base attraction. Which is fine, except in a season overloaded with characters it seemed like it wasted time and, at the same time, didn't give enough time to give any layers to actually have a conversation about a guy who sees himself as straight guy examining what it means to be attracted to someone non-binary. On one hand it didn't really do anything wrong, but on the other hand it also didn't really do much as a peice of the season when it came to Jackson's small peice of the pie this season.
@sorcellerie3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I liked scenes with Jackson and Cal but I wouldn't care if they both would be just written off. All they did was really just smoke weed and make out. It did serve as a huge learning tool about being non-binary and attraction and questioning, which I'm happy with. However, I don't think it was so necessary to pack so many scenes with them with so little plot surrounding them
@Maryam-td6rj3 жыл бұрын
Yess. You guys are saying exactly what I'm thinking. There were so many characters that I wanted to see more of that it kinda frustrated me seeing scenes with Jackson, Viv, and Cal having the same arguments and conversations when that time could've been used for other stories.

Specially because they always did good storylines for Jackson since the beginning of the show, and in this one they could have explored more of this aspect of his relationship with cal, what it meant for him being into a trans person and still have had better moments between him and Viv, maybe they really have a overcrowding problem there as space ninja said.

I really love your take on Ruby. You explained it very well. She’s quite alike Maeve by putting up a front as a defense mechanism yet people see them differently. I hate how people say Ruby’s abusive or toxic when whatever she says or does in school is just a facade to hide her insecurities. She’s a softy too.

Yes! Two scenes that really stuck with me were the flashback to younger her showing another girl her writings and being scolded about it and her getting rid of all her alien stuff after being made fun of because of it. It took me a while to figure out what I couldn't stand about the Otis and Meave relationship and I finally realize that, not only is the "will they won't they" dynamic getting OLD, but they're starting to make that couple act as though they're "meant to be". When Otis said "I think she's my person" I was so annoyed. The thing is, Sex Ed has a more realistic theme in terms of how they write teenage characters and their stories etc. But the idea that Otis and Meave are meant to be is a JARRING contrast to the initial tone of the show. They're two very unlikely people who fell in love. That type of story shows character growth and how you can find connection in the most unlikely places. But a meant to be story erases almost ALL of that. What makes it even worse is that they're teenagers. The reality simply is that most teen couples do not last into adulthood and there is nothing wrong with that. So it's ok to have had a connection with someone who helped you grow as a person, even if it means you don't have a relationship or stay in a relationship forever. I don't know why the writers feel the need to make this couple "end game". They can be friends or they can have other relationships without taking away from the initial character growth and connection in season 1. This endgame thing with teenage characters is not what I expected from a show as amazing as Sex Ed
@quasalor14802 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with you. Everything that you said rings so true from what Sex Ed has been like to why I felt annoyed at the words "my person". Exactly!

@Ale-rq1nz2 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY. i totally agree i liked how they’re more realistic about teenage relationships like with eric and adam, it was this big thing at first but it didn’t end up working out and that’s okay. but with maeve and otis they keep forcing it, i actually still shipped them kinda but i was also okay with them being friends. it’s getting so repetitive and it’s being milked just bc they can’t come up with better storylines and it’s really annoying at this point
@veronicajavier2 жыл бұрын
So well put! Also, I never really saw the romantic chemistry between Otis and Maeve even from S1. Being friends and seeing them grow in other relationships would have been a better fit for the show.

@CDexie3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I don't know. It's not that Maeve isn't ambitious, it's just she never got the chance to cultivate that part of herself, being forced to live day to day to survive. The Quiz, the gifted and talented, she always had to be pushed to participate.
@aleandtaca73913 жыл бұрын
I think that's the point. Maeve has taken all osf her previous decisions only thinking on herself beacause she was forced to face life alone, but that only made her know how much she wanted some company and love, it is what matters for her beacause no body really stayed with her before

I thought it was just an excuse for her bc she’s always hesitant to pursue academic stuff (bc deep down she believes she doesn’t deserve it) but even she knew it was a dumb excuse lmao
@macylightfoot3 жыл бұрын
I was kind of annoyed by that, especially as she'd kind of found a little family and home with her sister and the Foster carer after having some closure on her relationship with her mother. I think it would have been far better to have her hesitate over leaving that than have it be about Otis. I think they dragged that relationship out too long, to be honest. They should have put them together at the very start of S3 or drawn a line underneath them entirely. As it is they've struggled to keep Maeve relevant this season. Her relationship with Isaac was fine in itself but he wasn't connected to any other characters, so it just kept Maeve away from having scenes with everyone else. It's kind of mad that after 3 seasons Emma Mackey and Gillian Anderson still haven't shared a scene. And as much as I loved seeing the other kids take the lead in standing up for their rights at school, it felt really weird that Maeve wasn't at the centre of that, even if they eventually acknowledged it was the clinic that kick started it all. I still love the character of Maeve but all in all I'm not surprised Emma Mackey might be done with the show, or only show up briefly in S4.
