Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: Wise people are good at choosing, forging, and keeping friendships. The marks of a true friend are constancy, carefulness, candor, and counsel. When you are liberated to be the great friend you need to be by the great friendship of Jesus on the cross, then you will find yourself getting, paradoxically, all the friends your heart needs.

I feel exactly the same way as the commenter that expressed his appreciation for Dr. Tim Keller and particularly this message on friendship. Each time I hear it, it feels like the first time. Dr. Timothy Keller is an answer to my prayer for Christian mentor

That is so true... The friends I have had in Jesus, I so love them because they have Jesus in them. I have never known love like that and even respect like that (for those pastors who really know Jesus & I can sense it) for anyone in the world. And I love them too and will always love them even when I hardly get a chance to speak to them. They have nothing to boast about in this respect because it's not them, it's Jesus. It is like it is 100% Jesus, yet is 100% them - but ultimately it's 100% Jesus. And for other friends I have met who really know Jesus, I really love them because OF JESUS. We were so different - so different personalities, education levels, nationalities, etc.. what kept me bound to them - Jesus in them, yet them - yet Jesus.

True friendship is described as requiring constancy, emotional connection, truthfulness, and sincere counsel, which may involve both reassurance and constructive criticism.

How I understand this…A friend loves his/her friend, not using flatter, but will rebuke and correct you, so that you don’t fall to ruin. It’s not about always being loving and kind with words, often times harsh correction is needed.

Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity Proverbs 18:24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 25:17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house- too much of you, and they will hate you. Proverbs 25:20-21 Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on a wound, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. Proverbs 26:18-19 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, “I was only joking!” Proverbs 27:5-6 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. Proverbs 27:9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their earnest counsel. Proverbs 27:14 If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 28:23 Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with his tongue. Proverbs 29:5 Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet. “Proverbs says you will not be a wise person / will not lead a wise life unless you are great at choosing, foraging, and keeping terrific friendships.” Tim Keller, 2005

2:39 - "You will not make it in life unless you are good at making/keeping terrific friendships" Define "making it". If that truly was the case psychopaths/sociopaths would not be leaders in their field of study or industry... Just saying it's demonstrably false

+Sancarn Interesting take....My response would be how happy were those psychopaths/sociopaths? How healthy were their personal lives and relationship with God and Jesus? I think those things factor into "making it in life" in this instance...Just my opinion

+Sancarn I think this would also bring up what Christians should focus most on, which isn't just to be leaders in their field of study or industry.
@Sancarn

Wesley Sheffield Indeed. That's the difference really. "Making it" should be defined as "getting into heaven" if that's what they were intending. Cooper Land "I think those things factor into "making it in life" in this instance" Well... that's why I asked them to define "making it". If "making it" is to get into heaven then that's one thing but to me it sounded more like "having a successful career" which is far from the truth.

+Sancarn I fear you're missing the point. Without even listening to the sermon yet, I'm pretty confident that Keller says nothing about 'getting into heaven'. It seems more likely that he defines 'making it' in terms of the value of meaningful/deep friendships. You say making it is being a leader in your field of study or industry. In my opinion, while career success is nothing to scoff at, I resonate with the idea that praise for success at work is pretty hollow praise at someone's funeral. At some level we know (and our eulogies reflect) that 'making it' is about giving and receiving love from others in genuine and deep friendship.
