I watched this show way later than when it first came out, like some time last year. When it got to this episode I had flashbacks in my mind like "OH NO, it's THAT scene/anime". I remember it being on every meme side and you couldn't escape the "I love Emilia" wherever you went. I felt bad for Rem but my standpoint on the matter is still that Subaru did nothing wrong and this is the outcome that even Rem wanted for him, all the waifu war crap was bs ^^

I remember first watching this episode back in January 2019 and completely forgetting the waifu wars existed as I was too caught up in my own emotions and thinking how this has become peak fiction. It was only after that I thought, "Wait a minute..." and sure enough, from hearing other's first hand experiences, I got my answer. Granted, I knew that it was a "slightly tamer" version of DitF, but I never realized the full extent of the toxicity up till this point. Seeing this reaction now and hearing the constant use of the word "trash", it really is an eye opener for me. I now fully understand the frustration true Re Zero fans must of felt back in 2016 dealing with the normies' waifu wars and the rapid spread of misinformation through memes that gave the fanbase a bad rep. What's worse is that one of the comments above stated that on Patreon their saltiness continues to season 2. SEASON 2. I really wanted to spend this time not only analyzing the characters' emotional states/payoff and how its writing solidified itself as a masterpiece, but also detailing how much of an impact it had on my own life as well. I, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't have to explain basic information explicitly shown on behalf of their lack of attention span, resulting in missing the entire point of a scene. To be fair, I don't what I expected coming from a Dragon Ball themed reaction channel, but nonetheless it is still a huge disappointment.

A large portion of the point of this arc was that Emilia did not owe Subaru a relationship because he did so much for her, especially when he does stuff that ends up hurting both of them all while Subaru uses Emilia as an excuse for his horrible behavior. That's not how real relationships or love works. As an extension of that, Subaru does not owe Rem a relationship for all that she's done for him. He does not have to accept the confession if he does not want to. Once again, obligation is not a good basis for a relationship, and if Subaru does not feel the same way he just doesn't feel the same way. As for why he loves Emilia.....it's quite simple honestly. She saved him more than a lot of people tend to realize. He gave him a job, a place to live, saved his sanity in episode 8 when he was on the verge of breaking down, saved him from an early 1st death to the thugs during his first life, and is just a very good friend to him. Subaru views Emilia as his savior, just as Rem views Subaru as her savior. Meanwhile, his start with Rem was....(*flashes back to brutal torture and having his head smashed in).....rough. As a final point, I do want to bring up that Rem wanted Subaru to reject her. The Subaru she loves is the one that adores Emilia and everyone in the mansion, not a coward who was about to run away and wanted to take her along with him as a consolation prize. She literally smiles and makes a joke after he says "I love Emilia." This is what she wanted to happen. I apologize if anything I said here seemed rude or disrespectful, I just wanted to pipe in with my thoughts on this. I don't care who Subaru ends up with personally, I just dislike the notion that he's an "idiot" or "in the wrong" for not picking Rem. I hope my analysis/perspective was at the very least somewhat interesting to read. I will continue to follow this channel regardless of my own opinion because your reactions are enjoyable. Every year on Subaru's birthday (April 1st), the author writes an IF story. Named after the 7 deadly sins, they are branches in the story where Subaru makes different decisions. One of them is if Subaru doesn't reject Rem and they run away together and get married. Its the Sloth IF Story I think. Its pretty good, some new characters are introduced and they end up having 2 kids together, a boy and a girl.

Thats cuz subaru SAVED rem from her past thats why rem’s attachment towards subaru is so strong. In emilia’s case, subaru did help her, but she don’t remember most of the moments spent with subaru cuz that happened in previous loops. Hence emilia says to subaru that the image of emilia in subaru’s head is amazing, she can understand anything, but the current emilia she cannot understand him. Plus emilia’s backstory has not been resolved yet unlike rem’s.

I'm not a part of any anime fan circle so maybe I'm out of the loop with the rest of the "community" but, while I did initially dislike Subaru's answer when this came out I still understood it because I payed attention to the show and picked up on the clues. I personally feel that it's reactors that are particularly guilty of this behavior due to the need to commentate on the episode as it's happening (since it could be considered copyright infringement if they just uploaded a video of them just watching and not providing commentary). They talk over a lot of things and make jokes which is fine but it does cause them to miss out on context clues. Again, I don't talk to or look at forums where the general anime only community would be on so I could be wrong.

Everybody always gets super heated at Subaru stating that he loves Emilia but Rem refused his proposal to run away and get married. After she listed all of her reasons for loving him (one of them being that he never runs away) he realized that he can't abandon the others in the mansion, or his feelings for Emilia. He still loves Rem and cares for her deeply but he fell for Emilia first so she takes top priority even if part of his heart belongs to Rem. Sorry for the long comment but it gets a bit tiring seeing everybody hate on him so heavily for choosing to save Emilia (although Rem is still best girl)

At the prologue, the whole reason he tried to save her was out of responsibility of knowing she would die, not because he loved her. During the mansion arc, emilia didn't really do anything with subaru except that lap pillow part, and most of the story point is about subaru and the twins. And of course, during this arc, his relationship with emilia got worse, whereas with rem, we get to see them growing a lot closer. Which is why during this part, his rejection comes of tasteless, because we as viewers literally saw no reason why he would love her. Like, take a moment to remember what subaru is with emilia in the past episodes, he literally does nothing but flirting

Given the context what I was saying is that you(the viewer) can't hate a character in Re:zero based on the fucked up shit they do in a loop where Subaru dies. Cause they might not be bad, just given the situation of the loop they ended up doing some bad stuff, wich was the case for Otto, and Rem. Edit: alright, read again. He didnt even discarded Rem there, he actually invites her to be with him and make sure he does things right, like how is that trash. Subaru picked the right choice all the way.

Analyze the scene first, Rem isnt even making Subaru choose, Rem cornered him into saving Emilia and made him her hero. Subaru dont need to choose there bro. Rem literally said "no" at the idea of running away right at the start. Rem knew what she had to do to redeem her hero back.

the subaru that does not give up, the subaru that loves emilia, thats the subaru rem is in love with. the subaru that forces to give up on his love for emilia and run away with rem while leaving everyone to die is not the subaru shes in love with, thats why she was glad subaru reject her and was being honest with his feelings, that meant that just like what he did to her she "reset his time from zero" she saved him like he saved her.

The sad thing is, there is a spin-off side story where they do run off and start a family. They live a long and happy life. He died of old age. Then he wakes up in front of the Apple cart.

I'm a bit saddened to see that you saw this episode as a focus on the relationship dynamic of the three, instead of what it fully is about. It's about Subaru opening up about his feelings towards himself, how much he actually hates himself, how he poses as something he isn't to hide his shortcomings. It explains why he has been acting like a madman in the last few episodes, he threw a tantrum in the throne room because he believed that Emilia can't function without him, that without his return by death she will end up dead, and this thought was what was driving him forward, because then he would be important and not useless. Rem also had extreme self esteem issues, she understands that Subaru's mental state is at the lowest where he can't see anything but his flaws so she gently tells him about the things she likes about him. It's to help him the way he helped her, not to get him to reciprocate her feelings. She knows that he loves Emilia, the entire court room knew, anyone who saw him knew it. But the thing is, Rem loved the Subaru who works so hard and acts on his feelings, his feelings for Emilia. Now, I know many would say that Emilia hasn't done as much as Rem did, which may be true but that doesn't mean Subaru will immediately jump ships. He has said time and time again that he says and wishes for the things that he wants the most in the moment. Emilia was the first in this world to show him kindness. The only one trusted him when he couldn't trust anyone (the loop after Rem tortured him). She didn't know what was bothering him but she gave him a lap pillow only because he asked for it and listened to his worries. Subaru fell for her and an earnest guy like him won't just stop liking her. Rem has low self esteem, even now, she is just happy to be a part of Subaru's life. And that's a point of her character that will be developed later on. People call Subaru a simp but Rem is the same. Love just works like that, irrational at times but still sweet. And Subaru didn't reject her completely, he considers her as special as Emilia.
