Before the horses go to the inspection, they first go into training. There are several stables in the Netherlands where this is possible. This time we are at Stal de Mersken. Ginny will stay there for a few weeks and will then go to the inspection.

It's really incredible - the brick walks are even set in a Herringbone pattern, which is so labor & time intensive! Still, I prefer Stal G! ❤👍 Why? Because you too, have a beautiful indoor arena, gorgeous homes nearby...but it's your huge PASTURES with canals meandering through that feels more natural & far healthier for horses - mind & body. Go Stal G! Plus, there's Yvonne, Geertje & Rein, etc 😆

Yeah while I think this place is obviously well run, it's also on an industrial scale and that's for the peoples' benefit, not the horses. I don't like facilities where the animals don't get meangingful interaction with their owners and other horses. There are psychological problems inherent in those stalls. Open pasture and group living is what horses need, as much as possible.

@@complimentary_voucher - 100% agree. Our herd was SO happy & extremely healthy - even in colder weather. They had free access to a long barn w/ electric watered & a hay trough all down one side. They preferred that to their stalls. They stood together for warmth - like a natural herd would. They were only stall bound on the coldest nights & not one got a cold in the 11 yrs I was with them. They need free, pasture time unless being ridden for their mental health. I feel so sad for the high $$$ eventing/ show horses that are mostly stall bound. You see cribbing, head swinging, rocking & other signs of psychological distress. Gross.

Remind myself. How lucky we are this channel not only entertains and enlightens us about the beautiful Friesian horses, but we get an inside look at ground zero of the finest purebred Friesian horse facilities in the world. It would be similar to getting inside look at the finest Thoroughbred facilities and operations in Kentucky. Ginny is high quality filly and fortunate to be able to go to this training/prep facility. One can assume this is costly, so only the best candidates get to go.

This is sort of 5 star Spa and Retreat for Friesians! Ginny is a lucky horse. But although this is a bigger set up than Stal G it isn't as cosy and I love your pastures😊.

The amount of time hard work and dedication the team puts into what they do for not only their own horses but others who come to them for training is evident in both the way the stable looks incredibly well kept but the animals are also kept in the best shape possible to succeed to the best of their ability.It is obvious all who call the Netherlands home take immense pride in their magnificent Friesian horses along with any other breeds they choose to care for(like Stal Okkema)and are very much treasured/treated like family as it should be. Yvonne, thank you got sharing the tour. I love your stables. While this one is impressive it appears impersonal and closed off. I love the open design of your stables where the horses can see all around them and put their heads out to view what is going on. This one makes me feel sad for the horses. They are herd animals and must feel isolated in these concrete boxes. I'm glad Ginny will not be there very long. Stal G is a much nicer place for the herd!

What l noticed is the stalls have Dutch style gates that the upper gate gets opened at feeding time. They feed them hay in the hallway with the upper gates open. That's why there is hay in the hallway. I think they board other folks horses so for safety they keep the gates closed.

I too really disliked their concrete prison cell stalls. They look like a place where they are put as a punishment .🙁

The stables look amazing, especially the arenas, but I have to say I prefer the stalls back at yours -- they look less like prisons and more like nice rooms. Then again, I know they're big because they are mostly breeding mares and such, unlike Stal de Mersken. :)

Wow, the stables and surrounding area are huge and the scenery is gorgeous. Absolutely right, you three ladies added to the beauty of the place! 🤗❤️ Personally, I like the stalls at Stal G better because the horses have a better view of what's going on and it's easier to pet them 😊 The round pen is nice though. Thanks for the tour....now for the history of the white shirts, white pants, ties and 40000 steps on the Fitbit. They train the horses and must be fit enough to lead a horse with one hand, gesture to keep its attention with the other, and trot all the while. Are these outfits a remnant of Friesian agricultural past? It's a young man's game

Watching a second time. First time, I didn’t know what to think. Remember, I do not have experience with horses. You seem to like the solid walls between stalls? One window at the end, opens onto a common area, and the other opening, the stall entrance in the stable. The exercise in the round? I am glad I saw again. First time I was distressed for the horses. All day those horses were on my mind. But I see they were not tied to the area but were walking the round encouraged by a mechanical rotator. I am guessing the solid walls would minimize stallion behavior. There were comments made that were the same as my immediate reaction. This was a big eye opener for me 😳 not sure 🥺 about some of this. Beautiful grounds, stables, arenas, etc. Quite a difference from Stal Goengamieden! I see you have some rainey weather, happy day of rest for you!

Wow, that's a huge place. So the Okkema family owns both this place and Stal Okkema? I had a look at their websites, but there's not much information there. Guess, they're such a 'household name' in the Frisian world, they don't need to do a lot of self promotion. It's very nice, that you're providing us with these little glimpses into other stables, as well as Stal Goengamieden. Maybe one day, you'll even 'branch out' into doing a couple interviews? It would be so interesting, to learn more about the process of getting the young horses inspection ready.

In the small world of Frisian breeders it still seems likely, that it's maybe two branches of the same family or something. And it's unfortunately next to impossible to get this type of information, if you don't speak Dutch/Frisian.

This is a top notch facility for sure. Big like a 5🌟 Equine Hotel with indoor and outdoor exercise areas, a "horse treadmill" and stalls have a window view. Everything was so clean Only thing missing is a poster of👑 Uniek at the other end of the indoor arena. 😉

Beautiful Stables and grounds. Love the place! The only critique is the stables do not have a greeting opening for Horses. I prefer your Stables only for that reason. It leads to better socialization for Horses, Humans and possible other pets, such as Dogs and Cats...

How many horses can this stable hold maximum? How many people are on staff? How many stables like this prepare for the inspection? Where do these horses come from? How many are owned (approximate percentage) by the stable? How many are owned by people who live in the Nederlands? Europe? Elsewhere? A large and modern stable. But I can also understand that the stalls look a bit like prison cells. I think that's for security reasons. Can anyone still remember Eefje who almost get out of her stall? At Stal de Mersken, many horses are not their own horses, but they are responsible for them. A few years ago there was an incident at a Grand Prix show jumping event. A stallion broke out of his stall and went to a mare. In the end, both horses were injured. Afterwards there were big discussions about responsibilities and claims for damages because they were valuable animals.

I love all the muzzle smudges on the glass of the windows that have the low bars. It's so nice that they have windows so they can stick their heads outside and fall asleep to the sound of the birdies. I'm looking forward to seeing the inspection video.
