Rising Star hurt himself. Could this be due to the wobbler? I hope this doesn't happen again. (so far this has not happened more often in this way) This takes a lot of time and patience.

Welcome to my Friesian Horses channel.
My name is Yvonne. I create and post videos about my daily life with Friesian Horses. I will show you the true Friesian Horse and what they are like: day to day care, training, riding dressage and the very special birthing of foals. I explain the facts about breeding Friesian Horses and the steps I take to help better the breed.
You will learn that Friesian Horses have a naturally high gait, whether or not they can jump, if they are good for beginners and what they eat.
You will see them running, trotting, playing and even fighting.
I show you every aspect of my life with horses; the beautiful and the not so pretty. What you see in my videos is real!
Did you know that the Friesian Horse originates from Holland, specifically Friesland? That is where I live! I hope Friesian Horses will be love at first sight for you.

Having Rising Star castrated probably wasn't in the original plan you had hoped for with him, Yvonne, but neither was wobblers. I wholeheartedly support your decision. He will be much calmer without all of the stallion urges driving him. You are doing the very best things you can for him. ❤ I love these day-to-day videos that show you going about your business at your Stal. The horses and ponies all look wonderful and well loved, and you have endless patience, which is needed with animals. Thank you very much for this thoroughly appreciated video. 😊😊🐴🐎🎉❣️👋

Why wouldn't she have castrated? It's 100% normal to castrate horses that aren't headed for stallion duties, that's about 5% of all registered male horses. The standard is very tough to become a stud book stallion. You don't just leave a male horse with balls, generally speaking, it's unkind.

And so say all of us. Don't beat yourself up about anything Yvonne. You had mentioned the possibility of the castration in a previous video, so we pretty much knew it was coming. The injury could have come from anywhere. Have you got cctv in his paddock or where he hangs out? It might keep a better eye on him. You can't be with him every moment of the day. Did you get Spidey castrated too? 🤫😚

Gelding Risey was absolutely the best decision. I’m glad to see that so many comments here support Yvonne’s decision. It would have been extremely dangerous for Risey & everyone around him if he were to remain a stallion as he has Wobbler’s disease. He could not have stayed at Stal H with mares in heat. Hopefully, he will be calmer as his testosterone levels go down and continue to recover. Risey remains in my prayers. We know that this was not Yvonne’s original plan and that she hoped for him to have a successful career in dressage. Thank you, Yvonne, for giving him every possible chance. ❤❤❤

In a word: 100% Word! Rising Star with all those mares in proximitry, little ponies also nearby, and free-ranging children & pets potentially underfoot too **and then compounded** by his wobbles, **not gelding** him could be dangerous! Then add on the plus side, RS can become accustomed to being pasture mates with and the protector of Spidey, and the mares not with foals -- Just like Jors! And in the happy event his wobbles can stay under control, maybe someday someone could ride him!! What a lovely horse life that would be!!

This makes me appreciate Yvonne even more, it's pretty clear RS isn't an easy horse to handle considering he's on the warmer side, Jazz being his grandsire adds onto that as well as Rising Star's huge size for his age but she's giving him every chance he can get regardless. He's very smart to prevent the water from falling on his wound but the pain is necessary for cleaning & healing.

Geldings get to lead a more open and free life. Good for you, Yvonne, for making this tough but smart decision. Stallions have to stay confined and are driven by their hormones. Good decision to geld Risey. I've been thinking that even if he recovers fully from wobbler and goes on to have a normal career as a riding horse (even a show horse?), it might be better not to use him for breeding in case the trait is heritable. And it just isn't fair to keep a stallion around lots of mares if he'll never be allowed to do what stallions do. Much better to get rid of all that testosterone. Horses are social animals and he'll be much happier without his boy berries if it means he can enjoy turnout with the herd.

Excellent that Risey is gelded! For him, for the mares, for Stal H's smooth operation. Yvonne's patience with her impatient patient is inexhaustible, it seems. It's possible that he clipped his own leg, but thank goodness the wound was superficial. It's the ones we love the most that make us worry the most, for sure. Smart boy. He easily distinguished between the rattle of the spray can beads and the rattle of pellets

Very glad you gelded Risey. I know you have greater concern because of the Wobblers but many of my colts over the years, caused injuries to themselves that remained a mystery. Once gelded, they calmed down, were more easily taught new things and less jumpy. Funny story: we had a 3 year old colt who would kick out when you were in the stall with him. He decided it was his own little kingdom. We had tried all sorts of things to make him stop because he had hurt other people working with him. A cowboy I knew, studied the horse for a while and said you know if he was with another horse, it would kick back and one of them would end up the boss. He went into the stall, waited for the colt to try to kick him and kicked him back, up in the thigh shouting "stop that!" He didn't hurt him just took him by surprise. The colt stepped away, stared at him, lowered his head, blew out a long breath, and let both of us wander in and out of the stall with no problem, even when he was eating. He never tried to kick at people in his stall again. I don't recommend trying this to anyone. I was just taken by surprise as much as the horse when this guy took drastic action to stop people from being injured. He said he had only done that once before, years ago with a herd mare that became too dangerous for the owner to keep. It did put me on a path of thinking more like a horse and helping a lot of problem horses that owners had almost given up on.

Loved reading about your experience. Thank you for that. Horses are such an enigma to me besides I am intimidated by their sheer size. I have watched others with their horses and at times I thought they were rather harsh with them. But I do understand the rider/owner must take a certain command for safety reasons.

I like that the idea of chestnut horses being a little wild is common across the world. Never mind him still being a stallion there, imagine if he was a mare!! 😂 You are doing everything you can with and for him, and you'll both come through it. Perhaps not exactly as you once hoped, but even in perfect circumstances do things all go well ❤

Gelding is the absolute best option, especially with wobblers. You don't have KWPN mares, and he would rapidly hate life surrounded by mares he can have very little to do with, plus he'd get harder to handle. With children around, having a stallion, and one that can tip over at random, is dangerous to them, and to you. Not saying a Gelding that can tip over at random is much better but at least it won't be because he suddenly smells a "interesting mare" and makes a sudden move that over balances him. He'll be much happier as a gelding, as will the mares, and you and your family. As for his leg injury, anyone that's handled horses for a long time knows they have 3 modes, reasonable, homicidal and suicidal. And they manage to get injured in the dumbest ways at times, that's just part of horse ownership, looking at them and sternly asking them "and how did that happen" as if they will answer us.

@KJ-xx6xr I liked your "3 modes" of horse. I've seen them interpreted as 🐴💬 1/ Ooh, what's that? 2/ Eek, what's THAT?!! and 3/ 🐎 I'm OUT OF HERE !!! Of course, no 🐴 @ Stal H would be so ill-mannered for option 3 ! They all know how well loved they are, having been handled with care & affection since the day they were born!

I agree with having Risey gelded. I totally understand your reasons. A lot of people (those that haven’t owned horses) may think it cruel but it’s really not. It can be a problem to have an adult stallion in stables with mares. Risey isn’t an adult stallion but it’s better to geld now rather than when he’s older. He’ll still be the sweet Risey he’s always been ❤

I don't understand why this decision is regarded as sad in any way, as the vast majority of male horses are gelded, regardless of whether they are doing dressage or other upper-level competition. The old adage had it absolutely right - “You can tell a gelding, you can ask a mare, but you discuss the matter with a stallion”. Although there are some superbly well mannered stallions out there, it takes years of expert training to handle them safely and properly. A woman in Vancouver, BC, Canada was killed when her ordinarily well-behaved dressage stallion crushed her in his stall. One of the world's greatest show jumpers was a gelding, Canada's Belgium Warmblood Big Ben. Rising Star Is in good company.

Even in free-range, with horse-nations from like 1000 years ago only the best stallions could keep their manhood, all the rest were gelded because it's better for everyone. And the one who kept it only so they could make more horses. They're animals and thus don't have the concept of hormones so they can't work on their anger issues.

I know you've made the right decision for Risey. I like the way you said it will give him a more peaceful life in the long run. I know it's probably very frustrating to try to do medical care for a horse that does not want to be calm and just get it over with. But I couldn't help but smile - this so reminded me of one of my sons as a little boy. He was just terrified of every little boo-boo and injury. Not terrified of getting them, terrified of someone fixing them! Using the pellets to lure Risey was hilarious because I used to bribe my little rascal with chocolate so I could fix him up. I also loved watching the pony stampede in the arena. So much fun!

Anyway, Tracey, the owner has an 18 or 19 year old Friesian with wobblers that she still rides and drives. Annie looks great and is doing well. It may be an idea to reach out to her and see how she has handled Annie. Just an idea. I think it was great that you castrated Rising Star.
