An orthon is a devil actually so that kind of is a surprise given the whole lawful, contract-based thing.

@@Invalicer999 well, the orthon was just a general of Francisca's actual master, so he didn't have any contracts stopping him from killing her, he was just following the archfiend's orders. However, that does raise the question, how could the archfiend in question even order to kill Francisca if they had a contract signed. My bet would be that they had a loophole somewhere in there all along, because they're a devil, that's what they do :)

@@johncheshirsky8822 Devil are lawful but once you make a contract with them, they will try anything to get your soul as soon as possible (they have some cota to respect). It's not rare for a devil to manipulate someone (often another one who is in contract with him) to kill someone else to get their soul sooner than espected. Often too trying to get a less interesting soul to kill a more interesting one. In case of success or failure, the devil get a soul. So it's win/win... And Devil rarely garantie your well being in their contract. You will get something, that is true, but they don't say for how long...

I don't think the Barghest is a yugoloth, just that it fears fire banishment because it could get enslaved by a yugoloth if it was banished back to Gehenna Though, even if it was Summon Greater Demon gives the summoner a few rounds to direct the demon as they please, so they can just have it fight the devil forces and the havoc's gonna happen while she takes eldritch blast potshots from a distance!

Clearly a veteran of the kingdoms recent war against the great necromancer AZ'Kerash, he appears to have snapped at the sight of this horrific interruptment to what was supposed to be a quiet retirement in this backwater village. He lets out a scream of righteous anger, hefts the clearly enchanted hand-axe and standard issue blunderbuss his superiors in the army were too scared to take from him after the war, cleaves an imp in two from shoulder to hip and charges the nearest group of fiends torturing the remaining townspeople. Nice job warlock, you pissed off the level 8 barbarian/level 8 gunslinger.

why can't the devils and demons just honor their followers? like come on, would you rather have the person magically skilled enough to open a portal working for you and opening more portals for your army, or would you rather have them working against you and attempting to close the 1 portal you currently have? thinking logically it makes the most sense to treat them like any other member of your army since they'll probably be joining you when they die anyway, you might as well just grant them some infernal magic and expedite the transformation so they don't have to start out as the weakest form and work their way up.

If you're going to consort with demons, it's kind of important to learn how the hierarchy works. Being a lord of demons is having to manage a legion of Starscreams, each one looking for the slightest opportunity to kill you and take your place. If you're trying to call up a demon invasion, you'd better be ready to kill a few of them... It's not enough to expect gratitude for deeds accomplished, you've got to make them fear you.

Dude, they're the personifications of evil. Evil doesn't cooperate or play nice in real life or in fiction. Evil is self-serving and self-interested and antisocial. Of course they aren't going to honor their followers. You want a patron that will respect their supplicants, ask a celestial or good-aligned god. MAYBE an archfey if you're lucky and get one of the nice ones.

A concept I came up with for fun was a demon lord that was just an Imp, he was a greedy little fucker but also happened to be a master of all schools of magic, which is why he was a demon lord, the idea was to have a tiefling warlock who was both a servant to this guy and also be of distant relation to him, and he would basically bug her and be annoying, he was sort of a representation of greed used as humor.

Funnily enough, if she has the blood power necessary to summon an Orthang, she can cast Banishment. If she's absolutely 100% needing the ultimate middle finger card, contact other plane: Heaven. Fun fact, you can enter pacts with devils, demons, djinn...Angels.

It seems to be some sort of preexisting gateway that she just needed the right ritual to open, so she could be any level really. I am curious to see how she (presumably) wins, as EB won't help her if the Orthon is going melee and spells like Magic Circle that could help her trap it would have taken prep time. Banishment could work, but it has +3 to charisma saves and magic resistance, and Contact Other Plane is only good for making a new pact if she manages to survive.

My dm made a homebrew race of devils that had a more humanoid appearance with very expensive looking clothing and a charisma score through the roof! These devils would often act as small patrons for mortals they tricked into being their peons. This is basically the backstory for one of my warlocks. He's a copper dragonborn and is treating this deal like it's an office job. He has a daily kill quota and he gets it done.

I do find the format somewhat amusing it's like "the ground cracked open as hellfire danced before the eyes of frightened guards, before taking the form of small winged creatures (sudden record scratch as voice over goes into lecture mode) as you can see these imps are in fact rather weak, though sporting several defenses most of their skills are aimed towards deception with their only attack being a sting which nontheless has a potent poison (record scratch as we go back to epic adventure narration) something which the guards quickly realised as their throats and chests were pierced, the venome finishing the job quickly as al lthey could do in their final moments was watch as the people they swore to protect started dying" I don't know i find it an amusing xp

I find warlocks who are happy with their pacts way too rare. Wild children with demonblades, misguided saviours delaying their master's anger, followers of something greater than gods and magics are very fun. All I get are just "I'm really good inside, I just got tricked into following this guy!" characters. Also consider that there are demons and devils that don't really care for humans that much (Abraxis). I had a god strife campaign where I played a happy warlock teen, bored with city life and hopping onto a promise of quick power. That led to making a pact with Demogorgon, who broke away, was sealed in again (with my help), pact changing to Abraxis and later on replacing the dead goddess of FR magic with him. I mean he might not be the best guy but at least he doesn't die at first convenience. Also snakes are cool.
