I did this tear down a couple of years ago based on your first video. And it worked. Recently it stopped making ice again and I took a different approach. I turned off the icemaker and pulled out the ice tray and set the refrigerator on 37°. I went out of town and came back about five days later. I went to the basement and shut off the breaker for the refrigerator and turned it back on after about two minutes. A reboot. Within a couple of hours I heard the water flowing into the ice tray. A few more hours I heard the first tray of ice drop. By turning off the icemaker I turned off all of the ice maker cooling apparently. And all of the ice that was gunking up on everything back there melted because of the 37° in the refrigerator. going forward this will be my new solution.

I’m going this route… however, what I really want to know if anyone has actually found a FIX for this problem. This video isn’t really a fix, it’s a work around. My husband and I watched several of these videos on the Frigidaire gallery ice maker not working (must be a design flaw) this one was the most informative and easiest to follow. While I was waiting for him to work up the courage and/or patience to get started, I boiled some potatoes to make home fries. While they were still warm (not hot) I placed them in the fridge on a shelf directly below the ice maker, and 1 hour later I heard the ice fall. The potatoes must have warmed up the bottom of the ice maker. One week later, it’s still going strong. I don’t know if it’s just a fluke, but it might be worth a try. My husband thinks a miracle occurred haha.

Thanks for the video. My 3.5 year old Frigidaire stopped making ice a few days ago. I figured that some component system got iced up in the icemaker system. In my case, I found an ice pellet at the rubber water inlet on the top wall of the refrigerator. It was molded to the shape of the hole. I pulled that out and ran the hair dryer on high fan and high heat for several minutes. The motor barely had a trace of ice and so did the piping and fins in the back, but I applied the hair dryer there as well. Once all three places dried out, I reassembled the system and got the first batch of ice in less than 2 hours. Although the exact cause was different and I had a metal cover over the fins instead of plastic, your video allowed me to disassemble the system with confidence and avoid calling a professional. Kudos to you!

Thank you for the brilliant video. I love the sounds of your girls. It brings us back to a different era 😃. We pulled out the ice drawer and found that the motor area at the back was full of big chunks of ice like you describe. After watching your video we were thoroughly intimidated by the amount of wires and screws involved so we decided to see if we could tackle the frozen motor without taking everything apart. What we did was pull out the drawer. Then we turned off the fridge as you instructed, then we put two mugs filled with boiling water into the cavity. We then stuffed up the hole with 2 oven mitts and a plastic bag then went and had a cup of tea. One hour later we came back and pulled out the oven mitt stuffing and mugs and everything was thawed. I wiped out the interior of the fridge where the melted ice collected and turned the fridge back on and put it into quick freeze. We have ice again. Thank you so much for you video!!!

You know what bugged me the most. Not you. Or your obviously healthy kids ( i loved them). It is the fact that I need to take apart my ice maker. My last Frigidaire ran for 20 years. It is clear that in putting the ice maker where they did - that insulating effectively or keeping ice from forming - were overlooked. Cost conscious bad engineering is unforgivable. That's how space shuttles blow up. Thank You. Glad I found this. You get 100% for knowledge & clarity. 110% for effort. Well done.

GReviews, I appreciate you wanting to help folk, even remaking your video. I want to add that I have this exact same refrigerator. Tried the same repair, didn't fix for long. In a blog someone had commented that the refrigerator needs to have a 1/4" tilt backwards, in other words, the front needs to be 1/4" higher than the back. Sure enough, in the installation manual it is to be installed with this tilt. The guys who installed my refrigerator did not put it at a tilt, thus the ice maker freezes up. This has been a successful solution to this problem. Be sure to give the refrigerator time to go through the defrost cycle a few times before you say this doesn't work. What have you got to lose?
@GReviewz

S Good thanks for watching. Yes Ive heard the 1/4” lean works. The problem I have with it is that the techs that come fix the fridges dont even know about it...that puzzles me. If that was really the fix I’m sure Frigidaire would tell you to try that instead of sending a warranty tech to your house on their dime. I’ve put my unit through the defrost cycle multiple times but I can’t just let all my food go to waste. Plus the problem are doesn’t have any part of the defrost coil in it...

Great video. Thank you for the detailed information. I think I’ve found an easier way to fix the frozen ice maker without any tools. I’ve found there to be an inherent problem with the ice maker water tube and coils freezing up. This fix should take about 60 minutes at most. First put the refrigerator in defrost mode by pushing the + and - button simultaneously. After it finishes the defrost mode which should take about 30-40 minutes turn the refrigerator off on the door panel and remove the ice collector. Next put a pot of boiling water on a heat pad in the back of the refrigerator directly under the ice maker. Finally take a blow dryer and with the setting on high point it directly towards the back of the ice maker while you hold the blow dryer in the front of the ice maker. Do this for about 10-15 minutes. Then put the ice collector back on the ice maker and turn the refrigerator back on at the door panel. You should be able to start making ice again.

Great video. I too have the same fridge and have battled the same issue over the 5 years we have owned it. After 2 service calls from a local repair shop we found out that Frigidaire makes a "fan housing repair kit" to "fix" this issue (search "Frigidaire ice maker handler kit" to find part number). It consist of a larger gasket that goes behind the fan housing assembly, and some pipe insulation that goes on top of ice maker housing around the water inlet tube opening. It makes putting the ice maker housing back in to the fridge really tough, but it does stop the freezing up issue you have shown. However, it doesn't fix the issue entirely. Every once in a while, the ice maker stops making ice. Now it is due to the water in the fill tube freezing up. To fix that issue, I have to remove the ice bin, remove the front cover, remove the ice storage tray and then use a heat gun on low, aimed at the fill tube, to carefully melt the ice. I then put the fridge in diagnostic mode, put a container under the fill tube, and manually cycle the fill for the ice tray to verify I have cleared the ice plug from the fill tube. Put it back together and it will work for 4-6 months before it freezes up again. Really sucks to have to have to go through all of this on such an expensive appliance. Frigidaire is no help as far as recall/repair. They offered me 20% off of the repair parts but I had to buy from Frigidaire. I found what I needed via 3rd party for 1/2 of the price from Frigidaire including the 20% discount. I have also had to replace the defrost assembly, the auger motor for the ice storage tray & the touch screen control assembly on the front. I will not own another one, I can promise you that.

Thank you for the video, I think this is what I need to do, I have the same unit. I turned the refrigerator temperature up a couple degrees recently, and since then the ice maker quit working after no issues for 4 years. My theory is that it caused melting in the ice compartment or condensation, which dripped or beaded up and froze elsewhere. I thawed it with a hairdryer before and it started working fine again, but I didn't take it all apart and most likely there is a bunch of ice buildup like you had. The last batch of ice is translucent, which kinda says that the fan may not be able to spin.

Something I'd bet other people will run into as well - my issue wasn't the severe ice-up you had in yours, but simply ice build up in the water supply, preventing water from getting to the ice maker. Gentle application of a heat gun (never letting things get more than warm), the ice melted, and I should have ice again by tonight! Thanks again, great work!

Thank you for this video. I fixed mine with this information, but without taking it apart. I simply turned off the ice maker, pulled the ice tray out to allow refrigerator temps to go into the ice compartment, and put a small hand towel in to catch any melting ice. A few days later i put it back together and it worked perfectly.

Knowing about the defrost mode was very helpful. I was able to set to defrost, then simply remove the ice tray and take a hair dryer and blow on high in the ice maker region for several minutes, then do the same directly behind it in the rear of the refrigerator. I actually had ice build up on the outside of the refrigerator! After thawing the OUTSIDE rear of the fridge, the ice began generating just a few hours later. No need to disassemble anything in my case, just removed and reinserted the ice tray after "thawing" with a hair dryer.

I also have the Frigidaire 3 door similar to yours. In my case (now twice) it was literally the ice tray assembly that has been the issue. I have not had the icing issues, just failure of the mechanism that flows/fills/heats the cubes. I will however absolutely bookmark this in my head for when it does ice up, which I can occasionally hear the fan clipping on the built up ice, so far it self clears. I can replace the ice cube tray assembly in about 6 minutes now, having gone thru the process now more than once. Keep up the great helpful videos and thank you

@@GReviewz I appreciate the encouragement. Never had so many ice-out issues with any fridge ever. This one is puzzling though, replaced the innards to the ice maker itself, (new tray/mechanism) as I did 2 years ago, it made 2 trays of cubes and ceases to produce anything further. Doesn't fill the tray to make ice but yet the front panel allows for fresh water. Me thinks the relays assembly on back may be at fault, as upon inspection I do not have any ice buildup inside any of the innards of the ice maker area. Mine is darn near identical to the Gallery series, one level below but the ice maker assembly, mechanisms visually are identical to yours so they seem common between the various levels of fridge/freezers. Any thoughts where to look next? I do have a full set of water line relays/valves from when I changed them first time thinking they were the issue when it was really the tray assembly itself. (And I cannot access the force defrost option on my panel as it is one level below Gallery)

Great video of each step in taking the ice maker apart and reassembling it. It made the job easier for sure. My tip for other is to completely disassemble the unit until you get to the hole in the back. That’s where the last bit of ice was. I found ice throughout the unit but used the hairdryer on warm/low to defrost it all. Also, once its all back together, put it through the manual diagnostics. I did it twice and i think it reactivated everything. Ice began with the hour.

Thanks for watching. I am glad to help. It’s a moisture issue. Thanks for posting this, it's a very informative and helpful video but, you'd think there would be some type of defrost thermostat or defrost heater that would turn on periodically and target the evaporator coil to prevent it from icing up. The ice causing your problem didn't appear to becoming from the water supply that makes the ice but rather from the refrigerant lines and the evaporator coil. You even even showed there to be a good three inches of ice build up inside the bottom of the coil housing that leads to the drain. There has to be a reason why your Ice maker conked out on you at least twice now. I've had the same refrigerator, or a similar one for about 3 years and while my ice maker has never iced up like that, (knock wood) I've never seen an ice maker that was so slow at making ice. We wound up buying a portable ice make to supplement my wife's ice addiction.

Why is the ice maker in the refrigerator section? I have a Maytag side by side and my ice maker is in the freezer side! Yes...I looked. Frigidaire is obviously on the side with the milk in the video. Not for me...it's on the side with the frozen food! I never have icing problems and the unit is 9 years old. I see where lots of folks complain about the Frigidaire ice maker. The comment about Tilt was interesting. So...I was thinking about getting a Frigidaire...but now I see the extent of the defrosting problem and am amazed it is so common. I thought it might be design...but maybe not. This year after considerable neglect I had the exact same problem on my central home AC unit...freezing in the coils. The coils were totally blocked inside the forced air furnace. One big coilsickle. The repair specialist said that was because I had poor air circulation OUTSIDE where there were leaves and junk all around the big York box. He just removed the leaves and boom...no problem...the whole home Refrigeration thing works perfectly because I fixed an air circulation problem. OK...ready for this? Could the freezeups in the Frigidaire icemaker be because there was not enough air circulation somewhere in the system? Maybe there was a low freon issue and the motor just did it's best to keep the refrigerator cool and pumped a lot causing a colt spot. Maybe it was a heat leak issue in a double or French door setup and the ice didn't freeze right. Suppose the water evaporated too much in the summer or the unit was set a bit cold during a heat wave. I don't quite see the logic for the Frigidaire but let's just guess there wasn't enough ventilation behind the refrigerator....what...it's a guess! The fix is very cheap...pull it out from the wall a bit. I have a Maytag unit and for some reason the problem never arises. Maybe that's because I actually have 4 inches of room behind the refrigerator...that's way more than usual. I don't get it. Anyway...there is no room on one side but enough room on top and other side of the refrigerator so that the back of the refrigerator isn't somehow jammed against the wall in a tight corner.

Thank you for such an extensive comment. Yes Frigidaire has been having known problems with there gallery style over under style refrigerators. These units have been out for years with no fix from factory. They do sell a kit to “fix” the problem but doesn’t work most of the time. I figured out how to bandaid fix the problem but not how to cure it. Don’t buy the Frigidaire as you can see by the comments a lot of people are unhappy. Yes it may be the fact the ice maker is in the refrigerator....

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Just took your advice and hope to have the same result. One suggestion to help others would be to suggest purchasing something other than frigidair in the future. I have to work on this thing way too much IMO and hope to take a sledgehammer to it in the future. Had to modify the water feed with tin foil in the bottom ice maker to avoid ice buildup on the drawer track. I absolutely hate this fridge and am thankful for people like you. Next project is to see why the bottom ice maker isn’t working for the 5th time. 🤬

@@GReviewz The one in the fridge is working now but the one in the freezer is not. Going to blast steam into the water supply line and give up after that. Don’t want to support Frigidaire by buying anymore of their replacement parts so not going to pay for a new ice maker. I also doubt the ice maker is the problem since it isn’t filling with water. Removed, defrosted and dried the unit in the fridge. Insulated and painted the back of the fridge with rust oleum. There was a chunk of ice on the outside of the back of the fridge that had some surface rust. I replaced the water inlet valve system and the freezer ice maker still doesn’t work. I also bypassed the filter since I have a good water purifier. I have also installed a tin foil funnel under the water supply line on the freezer ice maker (not clogged). It would leak all over the bottom of the freezer and jam the freezer drawer and the track it rides on. Tried running different temperatures with no luck. Ive been fighting this thing off and on over the last couple years and I am getting tired of it. Having ice a is a constant battle. This fridge was designed by complete idiot’s and I will never buy anything made by Frigidaire again. That company can kiss my a**. FYI, your video was very helpful and fixed the issue for 2 weeks. Shortly after both ice makers stopped working and the fridge one mysteriously started working again. I had already ordered the water supply/ distribution unit which did not fix the freezer unit.

Going to try and defrost my fridge before taking the thing apart, but I'm having the exact same types of issues shown here. I'm also going to try the 1/4" tilt that some of the others have mentioned below. Bums me out that such a snazzy unit seems to have these problems.

Thanks for watching. Yeah a lot of people told me before I purchased Frigidaire that they are an awesome e brand and last forever...apparently not! But you taking it all apart should be the last thing to do after you try other things first like the defrost, tilt etc...

Way easier, do this: Set fridge temp to 40 degrees. Check with thermometer, our built in thermometer was off by 3 degrees. Turn off ice maker, remove ice bucket. Wait 24 hours. The 40 degrees will melt the ice without taking anything apart.
@GReviewz

Thanks for watching. Yes that is a very good idea. Only problem I see is all the water that will now be dripping/running all over the fridge when you open the door. Plus some foods require below 40 degrees to stay fresh.

Dude, thanks for the defrost trick. That actually worked. I did it 3x. I now have ice. This is unbelievable by Frigidaire. Not In the troubleshooting part of my manual as far as I know. Just a way for them to make a buck. We have a Kenmore refrigerator and deepfreeze. Both are over 30 years old and still going strong. I have had this garbage fridge for almost 10 years. Bought it from our local Sears. Menards would not match. They wanted $700 more for the same fridge. Anyway definitely have to do serious research on products like this nowadays. I actually did have to replace my ice tray part of this. Got it from Repair Clinic. I broke it trying to see why it wasn't dumping. Old lady says I'm like a bull in a China cabinet. Lol. Again thanks.

Excellent Video and spot on. While my motor and coils weren't really frozen over, freon supply line to coils was. Defrosting them solved problem. Be sure to run two or three pitchers of water thru fridge water dispenser after putting back together to bleed air out of line. ALSO ALWAYS TURN OFF ICE MAKER IF YOU ARE SHUTTING OFF WATER LINE TO FRIDGE FOR EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME ! I believe not doing this caused our problem. Again Great Video !!

Yes, there is a special seal kit that the repair person installed in mine that was specifically designed by Frigidaire to fix this issue. He also recommended setting the refrigerator temperature no lower than 36 degrees to prevent the ice maker fill tube from freezing and preventing the water from dispensing into the ice tray. Thankfully I had a 5 year warranty because they have worked on my ice maker at least 5 times since I purchased it.

This is a fix folks but before you take it apart try this. I have this fridge and this has worked for me several times. Press the plus and minus for about ten seconds. The fridge will display a d and an f. That puts it in defrost. You would think that would be enough but it will stay in defrost for about fifteen to twenty minutes and then go back to normal. You have to set a timer and watch for it to go back to normal. When it does put it back in defrost mode by holding the plus and minus buttons for about ten seconds. Do this four or five times in a row. Don't let it set long between defrost cycles. Like not even a few minutes. This has fixed my fridge every time.
